https://lingule.xyz/I've probably said it here before, but we should really resume using the letter "Ðð" in English!

https://lingule.xyz/I don't usually bother when it's the Latin alphabet. But it is one of those languages with a very distinctive look, with its beautiful Slavic consonant clusters and that "Łł"!
Couldn't resist checking if my guy was right. No websites or references. Got it! Very gratifying. 😏

The crazy thing here is that I have a poster of this script in my office, but I still didn't recognize it at first. It has (at least) 2 distinct #typefaces. One, which I saw in the puzzle, is more plain and simple. The other, in my poster and also in my view what I pasted into this post, has curly ends on almost every letter and accent. What a difference that makes!

Love this one - almost completely variations on circles!
Took me a bit to narrow it down, but I got there.

I combed thru so many pages on Omniglot of languages that use Cyrillic. No luck. So I searched using that unusual first letter, and the Wikipedia article on it is titled "Kazakh Short U" (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kazakh_Short_U).
So there you have it.

Apparently, this writing system inspired the aesthetic of written Klingon! -

I gleaned little from either the alphabet or the sounds. Had to go by the arrows, and some soft hints at the phonemic inventory. (There was a uvular stop /ɢ/ and a front rounded vowel /œ/ in the transcription.)
Got there in the end!

https://lingule.xyz/I love those stacked diacritics! Not many languages have the boldness to just pile them up like that.

Sometimes, it's just pure luck. I have no great insight today, no clever reasoning to brag about.
I shrugged.
I guessed.
I lucked out.That's it.

Something about the pronunciation suggested Urdu to me at first.
Then it was hunting thru the varieties of Arabic based on the arrows. I feel like I should try to learn something about how Arabic varies across the different varieties, to help me when this choice comes up again. Have something more to go on than the map arrows.

Not a lot of options with that writing system. Despite being used for only one (maybe 2) languages, it's been called the most sophisticated, best writing system in the world by some linguists.
Of course, it was designed along linguistic principles, so maybe it just plays to our biases.
But it *is* pretty awesome! 😍

This feels ... weird. I was just working today on slides for a lecture on the writing systems of India (and related scripts in Nepal, Indonesia, and elsewhere that are related to them).
There are so many!

Not many vertical scripts out there. (It's not rendering vertical in my app, but it's vertical on the site.) In fact, both of these guesses were for basically the same script, which has been used by at last these two languages, Mongolian and Manchu. It was adapted from a Uighur script, which itself derived from a form of Aramaic.
I'm learning so much as I teach my #WritingSystems class!
