  1. Many, many years ago, I played Escape Velocity on a friend's Mac. It was fun: a top-down 2D game with Elite-like mechanics.

When I got my own Mac (still in the distant past, but about 8 years later), I looked it up and saw that the latest instalment in the series was EV Nova, which improved the graphics and had more story.

A year or two ago, I decided to see if it worked on a new Mac and discovered that there was no x86 version (PowerPC only), so no chance of getting it to work on Apple's Arm cores. Apparently you can run the Windows version under WINE under Rosetta2 but that seemed like way too much effort.

So I was incredibly happy to discover Endless Sky, an open-source game inspired by (but not directly copying) the Escape Velocity series. It has everything I remember enjoying in Escape Velocity. It has wasted quite a lot of hours of my evenings / weekends over the last couple of weeks (but in a good way). And they're constantly adding new bits to the universe, new story lines, and so on. I thought I'd finished it, only to discover that the part of the galaxy I'd explored was only 50% of the whole thing.

I'd say my active games now are
    1️⃣ Albion Online
    2️⃣ Fortnite
    3️⃣ ChestBot

but I've forgotten a 4th that should be Endless Sky and now you may wonder why...

well it is offline and Mindustry can also be offline so both of those games should share spot number 4️⃣

  11. In July 2015, the first version of #EndlessSky was released. Ten years later is the perfect time to pick it up for those who haven't already!

  14. @zep I've been loving on both and .

Feels like a modern, better, top-down-view _Elite_, with good story lines and much more room for future development.

    Entirely , of course.

  15. Incidentally, if anyone playing Starfield has an urge to play another game where you jump from starsystem to starsystem, buying low and selling high, taking quests, buying new ships, upgrading your old one, or just straight going pirating other people's ships, but in 2d, don't forget Endless Sky is out there, free, and open source... (And, you know, your cargo space is the total of *all* the ships in your fleet. :P )

    endless-sky.github.io/

You can download it for free on Steam, too, if you like getting your games through Steam.

(Endless Sky is also basically a spiritual successor to Escape Velocity: Nova. I actually feel like people looking at modding Starfield could do worse then looking here for inspiration...)

  18. This game is a lot of fun and pretty obviously aimed square at my generation. I can't believe its 100% free. I may have to find a way to toss the developer a few bucks.

  19. Started playing Endless Sky. I have to wonder; are these self sealing stem bolts? 🤔

My hold is only 20 tons currently, so I guess I'll never know.

  20. @01micko
One free software SDL game that comes to mind is (github.com/endless-sky/endless). It's very light on resources, if that's what you mean by "small".

  21. Been playing for a while. Surprisingly comfy game, specially with the right playlist of songs to pair with it.

There's also the chance of unexpected time travel! Or more likely, just a oversight. 😉

  22. I'm enjoying just doing the generic jobs in #EndlessSky, but are there story missions? #freegaming

  23. I recently discovered Endless Sky and just love it.If you played some of the early space quest games have a look at it. I reckon I'd be close to clocking up 100 hours. If you're trying to be productive with your downtime maybe best to not take a look at it. endless-sky.github.io/ #endlesssky

  24. is a space .

Endless Sky features many ships which are easily outfitted with a wide variety of utilities.

Engage in 20 ship space battles over 2 star systems, or travel the galaxy to establish a trading empire with Endless Sky.

Endless Sky also allows for you to fulfill transport quests if supply and demand calculations aren't your thing.
