  1. the world has failed to meet its main #ClimateChange target of limiting the rise in global temperatures to 1.5°C, & will likely breach this threshold in the next decade, the #UN' #Environment Program said Tuesday.

The annual #EmissionsGap report said because of countries' slow action to reduce planet-heating #GreenhouseGas #emissions, it was now clear that the world would exceed the core target of the 2015 #ParisAgreement - at least temporarily.

  2. Good to hear #RichardBurgon is tabling bill addressing massive #emissionsgap #climatebreakdown #journalism #FionaHarvey
“Fossil fuel giants have driven us to the cliff edge of climate catastrophe. They’ve made obscene profits while millions suffer the consequences. It’s only right that those most responsible for the crisis fund the urgent climate action needed, both at home and abroad.”

  3. "There are no technological barriers to meeting the goals of the #ParisAgreement. Governments simply aren’t deploying the solutions fast enough, the United Nations reports. "

  4. ⚡ Renewable energy could deliver nearly 40% of the needed emissions cuts by 2035. Solar, wind, and forest protection are crucial to closing the #EmissionsGap. We need a #GreenRevolution now. #SustainableEnergy #COP29 buff.ly/3UKmmYL

  5. Latest research by UNEP finds the world’s ability to remain within 1.5C🌡️ of global warming “will be gone within a few years” without rapid action - finds the latest #EmissionsGap report buff.ly/4fjWP04

  6. 🌡️ Current climate pledges only limit warming to 2.6-2.8°C—far from safe. We need 42% fewer emissions by 2030, 57% by 2035, or risk an unlivable future. COP29 must be the turning point. #EmissionsGap #ActOnClimate #1Point5ToStayAlive

  7. Nations must close huge emissions gap in new #Climate pledges & deliver immediate action, or 1.5°C lost within a few years: @UNEP today launched the 2024 #EmissionsGap Report, with @lamb_wf (@MCC_Berlin) leading the chapter on global emission trends.

  8. Ahead of #COP29, UNEP’s #EmissionsGap Report tracks the gap between where emissions are heading with current country climate pledges and where they ought to be to limit global warming.

  9. "Proponents of #hemp tout its non-toxic and mould, fire and infestation-resistant properties

But more recently its ability to capture more than twice its own weight in carbon – twice as fast as traditional forestry – has come into focus. Hemp cultivation taking up only 25% of the world’s agricultural land used for dairy and livestock would close the UN #EmissionsGap of 23 gigatons of CO2 annually."

  10. Humanity is breaking all the wrong climate change records. It's going to take a massive shift and transformative action at #COP28 to avoid coming back to issue the same unheeded warnings, like a broken record, year after year.

  11. RT by @EU_ScienceHub: The land use and forestry sector is key to global #ClimateTargets, yet a gap persists between the science and how countries report emissions. A new @Nature study shows assessing #IPCC scenarios nationally shifts mitigation benchmarks.

  12. "As of the start of 2023, there is only around 250GtCO2 – or approximately six years of current #emissions – remaining that can be emitted before the world has a 50-50 chance of exceeding 1.5C warming. This represents a notable reduction from the carbon budget assessed in the prior UNEP report, reflecting a recent downward reassessment in the literature."

  13. #UNEP #EmissionsGap 14th annual report, showing the large gap in current national policies, pledges (NDCs) and global emissions. Will this boost ambition at #COP28?

    Key insights:
    * Predicted 2030 emissions must fall by 28-42 per cent for pathway to 2°C and 1.5°C
    * Relentless mitigation and low-carbon transformations essential to narrow emissions gap
    * COP28 and Global Stocktake provide an oportunity to build greater ambition for next round of climate pledges

  14. #ProductionGap leads to #EmissionsGap

"To get on track for the internationally agreed target of 1.5C, 22bn tonnes of CO2 must be cut from the currently projected total in 2030, the report said. That is 42% of global #emissions and equivalent to the output of the world’s five worst polluters: China, US, India, Russia and Japan."

  15. RT by @EU_ENV: The world is on track for a temperature rise far beyond agreed climate goals during this century.

  17. 14/n However, as has been evident for some time there is a significant #EmissionsGap - the gap between where emissions need to be at in order to keep warming below 1.5°C or even between 1.5°C-2°C, abs where they really are. This year’s #UNEP #EmissionsGapReport will form the basis for the GST.

  18. The #Weather, #vejret is a really nice publication: written in Danish to be accessible to a wide audience it also has some good #science content inc. a nice historical article on the Danish #Dijmphna Expedition to #Siberia in 1882-3, #JesperTheilgaard oh his new edition of #DetDanskeVejr which points to the #ClimateChange measured in #Denmark in the 20 years since the last, complementing a thorough article by #AndreasNyholm on the #EmissionsGap report + #Europe's record warm October
