Finally got e/OS/ going on my FP5. So far, it works pretty well, except for the bank app from N26... #N26 #eOS

Nouvelle idée d'article pour le blog (dans ma longue série). Vu que j'ai un #Adguard local, que je connecte mon Fairphone sous #Murena #eos à ce réseau local, si on regardait les requêtes qui passent. Idem avec #Wireshark. Et comparaison à faire avec un smartphone Android classique. Ce sera "intéressant" de voir les différences.

Dans le cadre professionnel, je me rapproche de @murena et du coup, j'ai accès à la beta de leur offre de MDM (Mobile Device Management), soit la gestion d'un parc de smartphone sous #eOS en entreprise. Je vais documenter ça, partager mon retour d'expérience etc. les prochaines semaines. Motivant d'avoir des mini projets avec objectifs comme ceux là pour alimenter mon blog.

I've been using the Fairphone 4 for the past month, since my old phone started expanding. (You don't want your phone to expand! 😱)

It's running /e/OS (a deGoogled Android fork built on LineageOS), since Murena's the Fairphone's only US reseller. I like the repairability, but it's a bit clunky (not to mention an older model). Fortunately my bank apps work with microG, and once I signed into Google (I know, I know) I can use apps I've paid for. But it doesn't handle system-level in-app purchases (yet?).

I've written up a pair of reviews with more details, one of the hardware and another focusing on the /e/OS software.

@globcoco @nemo unfortunately I can't help you here. It sounds too much trouble to get an API from Virus Total to download this APK.

Right now I'm checking if the #eOS users are having the same problem, as App Lounge, their standard app store, uses Aurora's GPlay API.
Apparently its a big problem.

I just saw that someone removed the ACC from settings, cleared cache and data, uninstalled and installed it again fro. f-droid. This looks clean, I'm gon a try.
Worst case scenario, apparently creating a dummy Google acc is the best choice, as the mass requests from Aurora's anon accs are being held by the fuckers.

Recently and silenty /e/OS removed Seedvault backup by a variant which backups to Murena Workspace only. You need to have an account there and backups will go only there.

No more "choose your systems", no more "take ypur data with you", but vendor lock-in.

And the release notes not even mention this change. They just talk about Murena Backup, not mentioning seedvault at all

This is very, very disappointing. I think I', done with /e/OS.

Background: On Android, proper backup can't be done by a normal app. but must be part of the operating system.

And, err, I feel some urgency to look at myself, older than 35 and counting.

My digital journey:
- mid 80's (childhood): my first PC, the awesome #ZXSpectrum 128K! self learning #BASIC, dreaming everything could be done with a computer. Playing around with my friend's #Commodore64K as well. - 1999
- 1991: #Linux is born! ... and I have no idea...
- early 90's (teenagehood): saved money for a couple of years or so, and bought the #Amiga500 expanded to 1M. #AmigaBASIC and #AmigaDOS; #Workbench1.3 is my place. Learning some #DOS, #Pascal and the almighty #C in high school.
- late 90's (dropped the university), bouncing from a short job to another. I could not afford a new computer, but I built one using scraps from other people. Late adoption of early MS Windows (95 to XP). I bought a PC magazine which included a CD with a full copy of #BorlandC++: BOOM! You know, I had no CD-ROM drive, but these are details I worked around. My unconscious feeling "Code is power, code is control" starts growing fast, but I feel trapped by licenses and lock-ins.
- 2000's: my first Linux discoveries #mandrakelinux / #knoppix live CD. That was sooooo cool, but I could not release myself from MS tools and app. #lock-in
- 2009: completely switched to #linux (Thanks #Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex 9.04) and never had a personal non-linux PC ever since - but I have to deal with them at work 🙁. I also bought a 512MB-RAM Atom Netbook that's still alive, running on #debian 12.

- 2012: my first smartphone (Android): I think I did not know at that time Linux was running under the hood. Today I know it's not the same thing anyway.
- 2014: after a five years learning curve (barely no free time, you're supposed to be a dad, lately. And work all day long, of course!) I was able to port, test and publish my comfort code ❤ (#APT package)
- 2024:
- farewell Ubuntu; hopped to #Debian to give some fresh air to my values and needs. APT fits me better than Snaps and Flatpaks . I know I could do better (#InitSystem, #displaymanager, etc.), but Iet's try to get to some kind ethics/pragmatism trade-off 😀
- so long, GMS. Hopped to #eos on my smartphone.

I'm happy to report that, with the help of this wonderful community, I have successfully installed e/os on my Fairphone 3, and I am not a computer geek nor do I have any IT training.

Thanks in particular to @axusss and @lgsp for their support.

I have not met many difficulties yet, and can use all my banking apps smoothly.
