Check out the April #drought #outlook from the #NOAA #NWS #Climate Prediction Center.
Good news for some areas, like East TX, OR, UT, and western NE, which should all expect improving conditions and even drought removal. It's not such a happy outlook for the Southern Plains and Florida, nor for the stretch from NC to the Mid-Atlantic that has been drying out these last few weeks.

The remarkable turn of fortune in the #West continued this week with #drought conditions looking as good as they've been in almost two years. Across the region, the extent of drought decreased to 35.6%, down from last year's high of 91%. In Nevada, the extent of drought decreased this week from 80 to 49%. It dropped from 73 to just 29% in Idaho.

U.S. #DroughtMonitor 3-30-2023:
Conditions continued to degrade in TX, Puerto Rico, and parts of the Upper South/Mid-Atlantic. Meanwhile, it was another week of significant #drought improvement for the West, especially in NV and ID. Overall, the extent of drought across the U.S. and Puerto Rico decreased over three percentage points, down to 25.7%. 45.6 million people are now affected by drought.

Conditions in eastern Michigan have improved rapidly these last few months. Just 2.5% of the state remains in #drought, down from over 30% this time last month. The state was cleared of severe drought in early March.

Conditions degraded in scattered pockets around the U.S. this week, from the #Carolinas to #Hawaii. But, once again, #drought also improved broadly across the West. #Drought developed in Puerto Rico last week after 6 months of clear conditions. About 4% of the island, centered around the el municipio de Aguadilla in the northwest, is now in moderate #drought. Almost 60% is abnormally dry, 4 times what it was just a month ago.

#Drought continued to improve broadly across the West this week, especially in California. Parts of the Southeast also saw improvement. The extent of drought across the U.S. and Puerto Rico decreased to 29.9%, the first time it has dropped below 30% since Aug. 2020. But dry conditions expanded in Texas, South Florida, and Puerto Rico, and 48.5 million people are still affected.

The latest from #NOAA #NWS #Climate Prediction Center shows a mixed outlook for the coming months.
Expect #drought relief in large parts of California, the #GreatBasin, and the Northern Plains. Conditions may also improve in Florida. But ongoing and expanding drought is possible across the Northwest, Puerto Rico, and parts of the Southern Plains west into New Mexico and Colorado.

Parts of Oklahoma have seen rapid improvement in conditions in the last month, and the southeastern part of the state is totally clear of #drought. But conditions are dire further west, and the #Panhandle is almost entirely in extreme or worse condition. Texas County is almost 95% in exceptional drought.

Over the long term, though, the driest conditions are still in the #SouthernPlains, especially around the #Oklahoma Panhandle. It was a hot and dry month for most of the eastern U.S., according to the latest #NOAA #NCEI #climate rankings.
It was cold out #West, but, back East, 15 states had Februarys in their top-5 warmest. #Virginia had its warmest February on record. Meanwhile, the #Midwest was unusually wet this month, but #NewEngland was bone dry. Precipitation was mixed elsewhere.

February was a month of extremes, with heavy #snow and cold temps across much of the #West and warmer, drier conditions across most of the East. The extent of #drought across the Lower 48 dropped to a 2.5-year low.

While the monthly #drought #outlook didn’t look so good for the #Northwest or the #GreatPlains, the seasonal outlook from the #NOAA #NWS #Climate Prediction Center has some good news!
It’s showing drought improvement, even removal, across most of the #West and Northern Plains, as well as #Michigan. Drought development and persistence, though, is still expected across the Southern Plains, #Texas, and #Florida. #PuertoRico will also likely dry out.
