Update from the Eastern Area Complex Incident Management Team:

Firefighters are starting their Sunday with overcast skies and rain showers. Those conditions are all beneficial to the work firefighters are continuing on the Cottonwood Peak Fire.

The area is under the influence of monsoonal moisture. If the sun breaks out later today, the instability could spawn thunderstorms in the area. …Firefighters patrolled high value areas overnight, keeping their eyes peeled for any hotspots along containment lines. Sunday’s efforts are planned to build upon recent successes, described as “solid victories” by a member of the Operations staff on the Eastern Area Complex Incident Management Team.

In the northeast corner of the fire, two large sections of containment line have been joined together. Work continues to extend those lines to the north and south. Along the fire’s southern perimeter, crews and bulldozers will be utilized to hold and improve existing fireline and to extend it to the northwest. There are nearly 1,000 people assigned to the fire. The fire perimeter is fully staffed day and night; and a spike camp is being set up on the East perimeter to allow crews to deploy quickly and reduce travel time from the main fire camp. A new group has been established whose task is to attack any new fire starts or to surge to any area experiencing significant fire activity.

Private pilots and all drone operators should be aware that the Temporary Flight Restriction over the fire is expected to be enlarged again. It is in place to safeguard the helicopters and airtankers being utilized to suppress the fire.

August 22 Evening Update from Eastern Area Complex Incident Management Team:

    Size: 122,110 acres, 10% containment

Current Situation: Firefighters continue to utilize all tools and resources available to build containment around the Cottonwood Peak Fire. On Friday, the structure protection group reinforced a multi-faceted protection strategy in and around Tuscarora.  Friday night operations will maintain a heavy presence in the area.

High terrain driven winds pushed the fire to the west and southwest Friday with structure protection shifting quickly to aggressively work on protection of ranches in those areas both on the ground and through the air. Friday night operations will continue a strong push to protect priority values at risk in this area.

Despite the shifting winds, excellent progress in connecting lines occurred Friday on many portions of the perimeter. Wet weather is forecast to move into the area as early as Saturday night and continue into Sunday. Firefighters will prepare for strong potential outflow winds of 30 to 40 mph preceding this system and will actively work to hold lines during that time.
