@pedersen relays hold on to messages until they can be delivered. they are encrypted and deleted as soon as possible, you can also start relying on different relays any time and use multiple ones simultaneously. so all in all i think we can agree call #DeltaChat #localfirst

Angeregt durch den jüngsten #DigitalCourage-Artikel habe ich mal #DeltaChat getestet. Eigentlich bin ich mit #Matrix inkl. Signal-Bridge gut und ausreichend versorgt. Meine Neugierde hat sich gelohnt: ein völlig anderes Konzept; vollkommen anonym mit allen damit verbundenen Vor- und Nachteilen. Technisch ausgereift und stabil. Basierend auf Mail-Protokollen wohl auch recht zukunftssicher. Konzeptionell irgendwo zwischen Matrix und #Briar aufgestellt. Nur ein Web-Client für die Guerilla-IT fehlt.

Bei mir funktioniert es noch mit der alten Mailadresse auf meiner Domain.
Jedoch kann man diese nicht mehr im Mischbetrieb mit normaler E-Mail betreiben und
man muss das Postfach manuell leeren.
... dies funktioniert bei echten #DeltaChat Postfächern automatisch.
Aber es funktioniert und man kann unverschlüsselte Mails empfangen, was bei Relays nicht funktioniert. -

... ich habe dann heute mal meine #DeltaChat-Installationen aktualisiert.
#Android 2.58.0 (F-Droid), #Linux 2.59.0.
Es existiert noch die alte IMAP-Box (ungefähr 2017). Ich habe dann aber auch ein neues Profil angelegt und ein Chatmail-Relay ausgewählt. Später hier noch ein zweites Relay ergänzt.
Kurz mit den beiden Profilen (alt und neu) ausprobiert... läuft soweit. Aus der E-Mail, die da generiert wird, läßt sich wirklich nicht viel ablesen (wie vorgesehen).
Und angenehm: #DeltaChat mit einem Relay aufsetzen geht ratz-fatz und benötigt keinerlei Daten zur Registrierung, also weder E-Mail-Adresse, noch Telefonnummer o.ä.
Nur... als normaler E-Mail-Client funzt das wohl eher nicht mehr. Also sollte die Gegenstellen auch #DeltaChat (oder kompatible) einsetzen.

Grâce à @sebsauvage , je redécouvre @delta , que j’avais abandonné à l’époque où il remplissait ta boîte mail de trucs bizarres.

Je suis impressionné par les apps collaboratives que tu peux installer et par l’aspect décentralisé totalement transparent (brefk comme du mail).
Deux difficultés:
1) Sauvegarder régulièrement son compte pour cas de téléphone perdu
2) Convaincre celleux pour qui SIgnal était déjà difficile d’installer un enième chat ;-)

I've used DeltaChat for about 7 years. I even managed to get a few family and friends to install it for a while, so we the built-in AutoCrypt would encrypt our emails. But none of them stuck with it.
Until recently DC continued to be a great mobile app for my personal email account. However, the devs are slowly moving away from supporting my use case, in favour of DC being a client for dedicated ChatMail servers. Which leaves me scratching my head as to its utility.

@ploum @signalapp @delta @arcanechat In my experience, many users miss WhatsApp's status feature and link previews in #arcanechat respectively #deltachat. Personally, I miss the chat export function—though Telegram's version is better than WhatsApp's.

From an end-user perspective, without consideration for security or network effect, which Whatsapp features are missing from:
1. #Signal - @signalapp
2. #Deltachat - @delta
3. #ArcaneChat - @arcanechat
So, if all your friends were suddenly with all 4 apps on their phone, which one will they eventually end up using? And why?

@sebsauvage Merci ! C'est hyper intéressant — j'en étais resté à l'histoire d'identifiant par e-mail. Depuis le temps que je voulais me pencher plus en détail sur #deltachat, ça tombe à pic. (Et ça clarifie les histoires de relai qui m'étaient un peu passées au-dessus)
Tu as des applis WebXdc que tu recommandes particulièrement ?

- avantages (pas de collecte de données, décentralisation, webxdc, etc.)
- comment il se compare à Signal.
- quelques précisions techniques importantes (Google GCM, rétention des messages...)

I used #DeltaChat in the past (where the version was still the current one) with some #DeltaChat contacts (encrypted) and also to contact people via e-mail (not encrypted).
Nowadays i don't really use #DeltaChat, as the Delta contacts stopped using it... and i wasn't sure about the capabilities of the v2 generation of #DeltaChat. That's why the installed version is now old. And that one on Linux isn't even working anymore... ;-)

Es war (oder ist noch) schon eine nur für #DeltaChat reservierte Mailbox, wobei ich eben auch normale E-Mail-Adressen angeschrieben habe (gern mit Hinweis, womit).
Was genau macht denn #WebRTC über den Mailserver? Und wie kriege ich jetzt raus, ob mein Hoster TURN (Traversal Using Relays around NAT) nutzt? 🤔

@rena2019 @delta Meine ersten Erkenntnisse: Ich glaube für viele entscheidend ist die Dezentralität, ich kann die sogenannten "Relays" (Server/Instanzen) wechseln oder selbst aufsetzen (davon habe ich allerdings keine Ahnung).
Ich hab auch keinen Benutzernamen, sondern einen QR-Code oder Link zum Austauschen (der ist rücksetzbar; anscheinend nicht auf dem Desktop).
Es gibt Infokanäle, als Messenger-Newsletter/Broadcasts.
