Because #DeltaChat failed to work, it meant the person messaging me defaulted back to #WhatsApp. A win for Mark Zuckerberg.

The #DeltaChat server that I was using seems to have stopped working for receiving messages, which sucks 😞 but such is the nature of decentralisation 🤷

It's really easy just to start a new account on a new server - so that's not really a problem - but I'm lucky that I only have one contact that message on the app because "re-adding" people isn't super straight forward. 🤔

Ho appena litigato con un medico del #CannabisMedicalCenter che mi chiedeva di inviargli dati personali, analisi e referti tramite WhatsApp.

Io: "Mi scusi, non invio dati sensibili su WhatsApp (che tra l'altro non ho). Se vuole, possiamo usare DeltaChat, che è più in linea con i miei standard di privacy."

Il medico: "Mi spiace, noi lavoriamo solo ed esclusivamente tramite WhatsApp."

Io: "La ringrazio, mi tengo i dolori e cercherò un professionista più attento a dove finiscono i miei dati sensibili. Arrivederci."

Alla fino ho trovato la mia pace dei dolori grazie a CLINN, gente professionale che al contrario del cannabis center non sembrano spacciatori di strada ma veri e propri dottori concentrati sui nostri mali e non su come li DEVI contattare..

However, they do care about social, political and other issues affecting their world, nation and daily life... so if you wait until they complain about any of these issues and then clearly link their issues to one of our solutions involving #privacy, #decentralisation, #digitalsovereignty, #opensource, #ethicaltech, etc. in a subtle and not-pushy way, you can have a good chance of success.

Using this strategy, I managed to persuade all of my family members to #gnuLinux, and all of my family and most of my extended family + in-laws that I'm in contact with are now on #DeltaChat.

@jon @Vivaldi Btw, would be great to have a light stripped-down version of #Vivaldi without the any of the proprietary UI bits for people who prefer Open Source. You could even make it a paid offering like some other browsers.

I didn't choose #DeltaChat on a whim, I did a month long deep dive into various private messengers which involved reading whitepapers, watching conference talks, installing the apps on my low-end phone and participating in group chats. I looked into multi-device support, battery drain, data usage, difficulty of writing bots/apps, funding sources, and number of devs.

La mini app Better List ( #DeltaChat ) à retenu mon attention. Contrairement à Traero, si on l'ajoute à l'écran d'accueil du téléphone, on peut donner un nom différent à chaque liste (je me fais une page de listes sur l'accueil du tél). Bon, je continue mes recherches pour une liste de courses partagées. 😉

Over the years I got friends and family to install #Telegram to chat to me, as I refuse to use #WhatsApp (ever since Facebook bought them). Telegram was always a stop-gap until the proper solution came along, and now #DeltaChat is it, especially since calls are now implemented. Also their Telegram accounts are getting hacked, so now begins the process of getting them to delete Telegram and install DeltaChat. Don't @ me about Signal. #privacy #messenger

Quand j'ai testé #DeltaChat et que j'ai vu que ça fonctionnait bien j'ai dit qu'on pourra migrer là dessus quand Signal deviendra maléfique. Pas "si", mais "quand".

#Signal troubleshooting - very odd support conversation

Yesterday afternoon I had a quick video call with someone using Signal and then I went to pick up my child from an afternoon summer program.

When I got home I realized that my phone wasn't receiving any new messages on Signal... but my computer was. Signal on my phone was completely frozen.

I followed a prompt and sent the most recent log to their support email. Then carried on with my life.

At some point, 2 hours later, I had a eureka moment: the last thing that worked was a call. Let's try the same thing.

So I called my mom and hung up (she was in the same room as me). After the call, all the Signal messages that had accumulated during the afternoon magically synched. Everything worked again! And then I found a new message by Signal saying "Welcome to the official Signal release chat!" Ok.

Glad I was distracted by my child and dinner because when I checked my email, I found a response from Signal support: "It appears the database is irrecoverably damaged. Unfortunately you will need to completely uninstall and then reinstall Signal. This will delete your message history. It cannot be recovered."

Say what? 😳​

So I wrote back to Signal that I had fixed my issue by simply starting a call and then all the messages started synching again. I thanked them for their speedy reply and said everything was ok.

I did the bedtime routine for my child and before bed I checked my email again.

Two identical emails from Signal:

"Hello. We understand your frustration. We feel it too" HUH?

"There is no specific timeline for a resolution at this moment." WHAT RESOLUTION, I SAID I FIXED THE PROBLEM?

"Please keep in mind we are a small team and have limitations as a non-profit organization. Uninstalling and reinstalling is the only action available."

I feel for you Signal and I'm super grateful for all you do, but maybe your LLM support system needs some tweaking. Because this has got to be some LLM that misunderstood my reply.

Thank goodness I didn't wipe 6 years' worth of messages, gaaah.

Signal has been working perfectly ever since. Still, I'm now compiling a list of people I message on there as a contingency plan, should thing go awry again.

I've been using #DeltaChat more lately and more and really love it.

Creating another chat platform is not hard. Making one which sucks less and you can get people to use it is a lifelong challenge.

I personally use DeltaChat, Telegram, #Matrix and Discord. And I used to use IRC. #DeltaChat already is very very good for private chats and they also haven't written the infrastructure from scratch. They just have built on shoulder of giants.

When I was a younger programmer, I believed I should write lots of code. As I grow older, and wiser, I know that I should achieve me goal with the least amount of new code written.

Suite des essais de la nuit (peu dormi...) autour de #DeltaChat avec découverte du client #ArcaneChat et de la mini-appli #Traero pour gérer les listes de courses (vraiment chouette !).

Très content de ces essais. Avec ArcaneChat, l'ouverture des appli est bien plus rapide. J'espère que cette rapidité ne se fait pas au détriment de la confidentialité.

Maintenant, j'aimerais vraiment comprendre comment installer mon propre relais, mais je pense que ça va être au-dessus de mes capacités.

Una delle cose belle di #deltaChat è che si possono creare e gestire più identità in maniera estremamente semplice, che un'identità non rivela su chi la crea più di quello che chi l'ha creata ci mette dentro ed è facile sbarazzarsene quando diventa inutile o migrarla e ridondarla se diventa più centrale.

Quindi ho creato un'identità da mettere nel mio profilo sul fediverso, il cui destino dipenderà dalla qualità dei contatti.

it is a chatmail client like Delta Chat, and yes you can use your Delta Chat account in ArcaneChat

in the welcome screen there is an option to "add from second device" and also import from backup
