Good news among the bad news!
If the recent #0day attacks against Linux kernel+servers were launched against #chatmail relays, privacy of chatting with #deltachat is preserved. Why? Because we already assume the server could be actively hostile, and still not read or see any avatar, names or messages.
Since the March 2.48 zero-metadata releases relays/servers do not see cryptographic identities, and get no chance to launch "machine-in-the-middle" (MITM) attacks.

Заразился порочной идеей "сделать макс из дельтачата" для знакомых.
Т.к., если не использовать шифрованный канал связи (а он это позволяет), то он превращается в просто мессенджер на основе почты, который не вызывает проблем из-за шифрования? Наверняка есть другие клиенты для почты похожего вида, но этот совместим с другими дельтачатовыми штуками (аппы, возможность переписываться шифрованно) и обходит БС, пока не заблокирована зарубежная почта/используется яндекс или мейл.
Не знаю, есть ли тут подводные камни (кроме очевидных). Пока заметил, что в заголовках при такой переписке есть что-то про аутокрипт, что может детектиться, и в частности лайки посылаются странным образом (пустое письмо с какими-то доп. заголовками), хз.

you •can• use it with your regular email account, but the default is to create a chatmail account, which requires you to give up exactly zero personal information (unlike #signal which requires #phonenumber).
•if• you do use it with your regular email, you still only "give" #deltachat your password in the same sense that you "give" it to #thunderbird or pretty much any other #opensource email client.

I am (yet again) trying out a new messenger, #deltachat. Looks nice, but it is a bit boring to message with myself ... Since this one has no discovery feature at all, I would be happy to learn how some of you managed to obtain the handles of your contacts.

Wer weiß Rat? Ich möchte in #deltachat einen Gruppe anlegen, bestehend aus den Email Adressen bestimmter Kontakte. Leider findet Deltachat keinen einzigen Kontakt, auch die nicht, die sich im anderen Gruppenchat befinden.
Woran könnte es liegen?

Er hat leider keine Ahnung wie #DeltaChat wirklich funktioniert. 😉 Dass DeltaChat über eine spezielle Konfiguration läuft die sämtliche relevanten #Metadaten in der Verschlüsselten Bereich verschiebt ist ihm offenbar nicht bekannt.

sometimes @wikipedia feels like a mafia, some #DeltaChat users tried to create a Delta Chat entry in Wikipedia (EN) several times over the years and they always rejected it, claiming it is not relevant enough and needing more sources,
when sources were provided someone would comment that "likely that are paid articles" and shit like that
even when Delta Chat page exist for other languages already
then there are things like Beeper https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beeper_(software) with a SINGLE citation to a paid-walled article
what gives???
please if some of you have experience contributing to Wikipedia (and I guess some secret connections or being known contributor is needed as well) consider creating a Delta Chat entry
it is really unfair that at this time and age any random messenger is in Wikipedia but Delta Chat

Signal doesn’t support using the same account in multiple phones, and multi-device with desktop is weak and still depends on the phone, with delta chat you can have several devices at the same time and it is super easy to add a second device
I tried to use Signal, but I couldn’t figure out how to without a phone (I primarily use Linux desktop).
Glad I found Delta Chat.

Дуров в очередной раз абъюзит интерфейс #Telegram, чтобы рекламировать платные функции, NFT-подарки и теперь свой канал. Среднестатистическому пользователю такой спам не нужен. Мессенджер часто используется в рабочих целях, и такая реклама становится просто недопустимой. Её нельзя убрать даже с подпиской Telegram Premium.
Свободные, открытые и децентрализованные платформы, такие как #DeltaChat, никогда не будут содержать подобного мусора. Хороший мессенджер не должен отвлекать от общения.
(Конечно, хотелось бы папки и в Delta Chat...)

Der Punkt mit den bestehenden Kontakten stimmt und ist gewichtig!
Die Menschen, die ich von #Deltachat überzeugen konnte, vermissten genau das.
Sie nutzen #Deltachat für die privaten Kontakte, die für sie relevant sind, für weniger wichtige oder Geschäftskontakte parallel WA. Bei rein privaten Kontakten ist der Scan eines QR-Codes nicht so das Problem. Bei neuen Kontakten geht es dann sogar noch schneller, als sich eine Telefonnummer einzutippen, war die Rückmeldung an mich.
Von Email im Hintergrund merkt hier niemand was und glaube, das Argument ist nur was für Techis, aber nicht für normale Deltachat-Benutzer.
Danke für den Artikel, als Deltachat-Fan denke ich oft nicht an die bestehenden Kontakte z.B. bei Menschen in großen Netzwerken.

@poes @nawanp ada kok buat host sendiri #deltachat: #chatmail. Tapi gak usah chatmail pakai SMTP dan IMAP biasa juga bisa kok. Dah pernah coba. Paling "agak boros" batere kalo IMAP nya gak support IMAP IDLE. Dan create user nya gak bisa dari aplikasi deltachat.
Sebenernya masalah quota di nine.testrun.org atau host lainnya itu cuma bakal ngaruh buat offline message. Deltachat pakai email itu cuma buat relay kalo pas offline dan kalo gak salah bantu discovery. Begitu online dan kesedot, selanjutnya antar deltachat baik dengan akun lain ataupun akun sendiri kalo multiple device dia p2p pake #iroh.
Tapi kalo mau agak gede quota nya, pake relaynya dari #arcanechat, dapat 2GB

We don't think any institution or state has the right to prevent families and friends from private chatting, physically or digitally. But the Cyber Authority China (CaC) seems to take offense:
- they made Apple remove #deltachat iOS for mainland china
- their great firewall appears to block some #chatmail relays
- if you ask DeepSeek directly about Delta Chat, it doesn't want to talk
It's pretty sad, really. Everybody on this planet needs, and has a human right to private communication.
