Tonight, returned to the second mall that wasn't memories that were clashing with memories that werent-
Wanting to see the lot and the solitary building, only to find demolition crews working on the whole building. At least what was left. I found myself with permission to take photos and videos of what I could
Until I couldn't from a construction crew.
Then heading back somewhere else to see what was left, I find the memory of real- the mall offices with still power running through them. Almost like them. A mess like last time I went there, but left intact.
My only wish was to save what property documents, maps, and diagrams that were left there so there could be something archived.
I had my wish. Shortly after, I woke up.
That part of the dream represents some of my inmost desires of wishing to have been able to preserve more of North Dekalb Mall. I still need to get more of what I have scanned and uploaded online, but there was so much more that was lost in it's destruction.
I wish I could have been able to do more but my body refused to let me. I need to edit my video soon.

When urban renewal goes wrong: Inside a dead mall frozen in 1990.
Very interesting short film by Bright Sun Films. Along with the usual urban exploration bits, he gives a good history of how and why it failed.
The shopping centre was supposed to revitalise downtown Hamilton, Ontario.
But within six years, it had just a 40% occupancy rate.
A decade after opening, it sold for only CAN$3.6 million — just 5% of what it originally cost to build.

I was reminded of this today by someone else that mentioned a dead mall they took pictures of is getting demolished, but Im glad Dan Bell made a video covering one of the malls (Oak Hollow) I went to and enjoyed as a child. Its my hope to recreate in VRC someday.

Why American malls are dying, and European ones aren't.
Adam Something's latest video looks at while malls in Europe aren't seeing the same fate as their American counterparts, despite the same competition from Amazon.
He suggests that low-density urban planning and car-dependent suburban sprawl are a big factor that no-one talks about.
For what it's worth, Australia also hasn't seen the massive number of dying/dead malls that the US has since the GFC.
At least in Sydney, many of our big shopping centres tend to be close to public transport. (Think QVB, Westfield Bondi, Westfield Chatswood, Chatswood Chase, Westfield Parramatta, Stocklands Merrylands, Burwood Plaza, Strathfield Plaza, Westfield Hornsby, Westfield Miranda, Castle Towers, Westfield Hornsby...)
Most also have at least two supermarkets (a Coles and a Woolies).

With North Dekalb Mall and Gwinnett Place Mall facing demolition later this year, I have a great sadness in my heart.
From the first time I went to NDM in September 2015, to the last time it was open two and a half years ago- I saw its gradual decline from dying mall to a dead mall.
July 2017 kicked off my Mall Aesthetics series starting with Gwinnett Place Mall. A place that was quiet but had most of it's anchors at the time. Curious was the closed off wing which I later found out to be hiding a former school and Parisian. In the years that followed, I got to know people in the greater Dead Malls community and eventually discovered the queer dead mall scene out here in ATL.
Across those years, I found out that Stranger Things was filming part of their 3rd season at GWP. With bigger balls than anyone else, I was one of the first people to do video coverage of the set between filming days on multiple occasions. It was thrilling and terrifying sneaking onto a film set and it's and it's a feeling I don't think I'll be able to replicate anytime soon
While the infamous Lincoln Mall may a very special mall, North Dekalb and Gwinnett Place Malls are two that I have expierenced to their near fullest and will forever hold a special place in my heart

However #deadMalls are not a uniquely Greek problem. Online shopping has eaten away from retail revenue and malls are dying in the US with an unprecedented rate. This along with the recession killed the few that did it right too.
