There have been over 7 million recorded fatalities due to COVID-19, from the beginning of the pandemic until the end of 2023, according to official data, but the actual death toll from the disease may be closer to 21 million, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has said.
“We are missing deaths from around the world. Because countries aren’t reporting deaths, it doesn’t mean that they’re not happening,” said Dr Van Kerkhove, adding that there had been a 42% increase in hospitalisations and a 62% rise in ICU admissions in December 2023.

(2/2) The chance that covid was simply "rebranded flu" or that covid deaths simply replaced the flu is zero. anyone who says that doesn't understand mortality in the slightest.
To put it into perspective (lazier graph, sorry), there have been as many covid deaths in the past 3 years as there have been flu deaths since 2005. (18 years)

What concerns me the most, by far, about SARS-CoV-2, is that, in the absence of better vaccines and therapeutics, we are heading towards an inexorable reduction in global population health.
Even if the virus maintains the same virulence, the data we now have on the average rate of re-infection, combined with the data we have on the likelihood of sequelae of infection and Long Covid with each infection, makes it a near-certainty that a growing percentage of the world will continue to become chronically ill and / or disabled.
The pandemic is often framed as a 'mass-disabling' event, but what I think most people don't understand is what that actually entails. It means pressure on global healthcare services that will be detrimental to everyone, not just those suffering from Covid-related illnesses. It means significant logistical and supply-chain problems. It means economic recessions. It could well mean an increase in civil disorder.
Fundamentally, it means a drop in quality of life for all. Reducing the transmission of this virus should be the primary global priority right now. If we don't work this problem with the solutions we have (cleaning indoor air, fast-tracking better vaccines and therapeutics) everyone loses. Everyone!
