COVID and flu shots done! They didn’t ask me if I was eligible for the “free” COVID shot at the public heath clinic I went to. Just a poke in both arms!

Question for folks in Alberta who have already got your Covid shot this year (or know someone who has):
Have you been asked for any sort of documentation or details about what disability or medical condition you have that makes you eligible for the free shot under their new system?I've seen a couple people post now that the public health nurses are not asking questions, it's just a self-declare checkbox when you sign up for an appointment.
To be clear: I am disabled, from Long Covid on top of chronic (never usefully diagnosed) issues. I still frequently end up in tears from the cognitive blocks, talking like a toddler to myself trying to get anything done. Still regularly end up shivering with shrivelled fingers from electrolyte imbalances. And ever since Covid I seem to catch any virus that anyone near me has, if I'm not perfect with masking.
But I don't have any paperwork for it.
(Because dealing with skeptical doctors is pretty high up on the list of cognitive tasks I just can't handle.) -
@buffyleigh Hmmm, I'm not sure the (limited) Covid wastewater data for Edmonton backs that up.
The provincial data (as passed on to the universities that used to do it independently) is supposed to be normalized by sewage volume & then reported relative to population. It shows fairly stable medium-low Covid levels in Edmonton:

But since the "high" status is based on a single, once-a-week reading, I'd say that it is quite possible that it's a fluke. Hot & dry weather could have led to low sewage volumes & the per-person normalization process may be a reasonable correction.
But still: Covid levels are trending up compared to the spring, here & across the province.

The UCP have quietly announced a BAN on covid vaccination for most kids under 12.
They have revised to a two phase rollout, neither of which make kids without severe medical eligible for vaccination.

🚨 Covid vaccines in Alberta will only be available from public health clinics, not pharmacies, this coming season. Access will be staggered by priority groups & most will need to pay (~$100?) out of pocket or private insurance.
The justification about wasted doses doesn't really add up. Fewer administration sites could reduce wastage from open multi-dose vials, but pre-ordering reduces that as well as end-of-season waste. Making people pay is just 🤬

Usual caveat: testing is very limited now, even when admitting patients to hospital, there's a delay if it is done, & hospital stats exclude people infected in hospital.
RSV & Influenza (H1N1 & H3N2) have shot up, & are currently outnumbering Covid in hospital admissions.
All combined, weekly admissions similar to 2020-21 Covid waves.

Covid rates are trucking along, slowly but steadily reinfecting… no alarming spikes, but the area under the curve ends up being a lot of people.

From an anonymous source, data shows that #COVID19AB encounters have DOUBLED in Alberta in the past ten days.
This is putting a massive load on Emergency and inpatient departments across the province.
Strangely, the CMOH and Adriana LaGrange are silent.At the peak of the Delta wave, 1400 beds were occupied by patients with COVID. As of writing, approximately 7500 beds are currently occupied by patients with COVID.

Oh, 'Berta...
Physician & primary care clinics in Alberta are currently not receiving any vaccines (Covid, flu, TDAP tetanus/whooping cough, anything) because the province doesn't have an active contract with a distributor. You have to get your shot at a pharmacy or public health clinic. Even for shots that would normally be given at a routine prenatal screening. Or a tetanus shot that should be given at the same time as getting stitches for a cut.

Certainly isn’t the ‘flu… there is currently ZERO ’flu in #yeg and that data’s only a few days old. Do you think someone in the GoA has said we need to double and triple check (delay) high data points so as not ‘alarm people unnecessarily’?

Edmonton Zone Medical Staff Association getting in their receipts for future I-told-you-so's about fall Covid & flu overwhelming local hospitals:
Every day the vaccine is delayed risks more infection, hospitalization and death of Albertans.
Meanwhile, Alberta Health Minister Adriana LaGrange refuses to say the word "Covid":

It's the new year on the #Alberta Respiratory Virus Statistics page, so let's recap 2023-24 before they wipe the data tables clean:
732 Albertans were confirmed to have died of Covid, the lowest in 4 years. Most were seniors, but 4 were kids, & 33 were adults under 60.
6070 people were hospitalized for Covid, including nearly 1 in every 200 infants & 1 in every 62 seniors over 80.
Covid rates were highest in October-November, but every week had dozens of Covid hospitalizations.

“Peak Covid” is a phrase I have heard recently applied to various aspects of early pandemic life in 2020.
This was *not* “peak Covid”, this was “peak Covid response” and it did a pretty decent job of holding the disease at bay.
True “Peak Covid” was 2022-early 2023 when 75-85% of people in Edmonton contracted the disease, and many experienced recurrent infections. Peak Covid was what happened when we gave up caring about ourselves and each other.

Influenza A (H1N1) is still surging in Alberta.
When it comes to hospitalizations, flu is now as bad as Covid has been for months.
Remember that when the government tries to talk about flu as the driver for "respiratory virus season". But also remember that the total number of new patients with respiratory infections has doubled in the past few weeks, and it was already straining hospital resources before that.
