Yeah… Alberta cities (according to wastewater) are seeing a resurgence after about nine months of *very* low levels. There may be a number of causes but heading into the fall with low vaccination rates is probably playing a role (because the GovofAB is restricting access and charging a ridiculous $100 if you can navigate the procedural roadblocks)

Welp, I showed up for my COVID (and flu) shot appointment today, and was told that due to a government supply issue, they don't have any COVID shots yet. "Hopefully tomorrow".

OK #yeg, here comes the fall Covid wave. The most recent data point is Tuesday Oct 3. If you aren’t taking precautions it’s more a matter of when you will contract Covid, not if.

Alberta Health's updated respiratory virus dashboard was released last week & data is now being updated. A review.
First, the positive points:
- It is useful to have data on all the viruses side by side, if only to emphasize how dominant Covid still is.
- Many of the charts on the old dashboard had become useless because they were reporting cumulative data for the pandemic; they are now showing data per year starting September.

Covid wastewater tracking for Edmonton has finally caught up, and it’s as grim as expected. We’re working on a huge back to school spike, with no flu or rsv circulating. So if you’ve got ‘that thing’ that’s going around, it’s probably covid… the airborne vascular disease that damages your circulatory system and heart.

Hey Edmonton, there’s a solid upward trend in Covid prevalence, with last data from Sunday Sep 3. I hope to be proved wrong, but will schools back in session, I’m expecting this to get a lot worse before it gets better.

Finally! Alberta’s #CovidTracker is back up and running after a 3 week disruption (testing has been moved from the unis to AHS.
Unfortunately new data is not directly comparable to old data, the discontinuity is distressing.
Look out #YEG! After a few months of low prevalence a #Covid surge got underway while we weren’t looking, *please note* the last data point below is already a week old.

Covid is an airborne vascular disease, that’s been pretty clear for a while now. ‘Mild’ only describes the acute phase, and high vaccination levels means more people are surviving the acute phase long enough to show all the other kinds of damage this virus does to bodies.
When an extra 100,000 a year die in the US of Heart Disease, “Accidents”, Stokes, or Diabetes since 2020, the reluctance to even mention Covid as a contributor is unbelievable. -

My reluctant prediction for Alberta/Canada: by October it will become noticeable that lots of people are catching the ‘flu’, bc so many of these will be second and third infections, the number of people having trouble ‘shaking off this cold’ will be substantial, lots of children will start missing significant time is school, a surprising number of young and middle aged people will die unexpectedly as 2024 progresses.
But no one will mention Covid. -
The bigger long term concern is the effect of even ‘mild’ Covid infection on placental development. I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop, when something like FAS is identified for Covid.
I so hope I’m wrong, but I won’t at all be surprised.

Delightful. Grabbing something from our car in the underground parking and people start piling out of another vehicle.
One person looks at my N95 mask and immediately starts fake-coughing as much as possible and encourages others to do so.

It started as way to keep myself from checking numbers every day. It forces me to focus on the major trends beyond the statistical noise. And other people have said they find them helpful, too!
