Nu är det dags för slaget om Dunkeld. Den här gången ska Jakobiterna få på tafsen i alla fall!

Today marks the 80th Anniversary of the start of the Battle of the Bulge. Over 80,000 Allied casualties, 8600 dead. My grandfather was in this battle, among others, during his time in the ETO. My plans for today will be to play these two wargames: Lanzerath Ridge and WWII CMDR: BotB.

Sigh. I guess it’s best to be aware of this before my pre-order of A&A arrives. I do like that they have provided errata counter strips for some of their games for free. However, the same problems still arise. And #CompassGames does not react well to criticism of their errata. QA for war board game publishers is not their strong suit. -

My 2nd play of the Europe in Turmoil 2 #boardgame
We tried the short 3 turn Appeasement scenario. It's good there are 3 different length scenarios to allow flexibility in play time. We are still in the honeymoon phase getting to know the events and processes. Check it out if you want a game in the style of #TwilightStruggle
Game is published by #CompassGames -
Europe in Turmoil 2 #boardgame
A 2-player game on politics, extremism, and militarism in Europe during the 1920-30s.
First play for myself and Mark. My greater experience in playing #twilightstruggle and the previous EIT1 helped me once we got going. It was a learning game with plenty of table talk and strategizing. We had a fun time despite not finishing the game.

First new #boardgame arrival for 2024 is Europe in Turmoil 2 from #CompassGames
It’s a 2-player game on Europe in the 1920-30’s with the left wing versus the right wing as the factions. The CDG system is similar to the previous Europe in Turmoil and 1989 Dawn of Freedom (from #GMTGames ). Hence familiar enough to folks who have played Twilight Struggle.
I enjoyed EIT1 (that covers the 20-ish years in the run-up to the Great War) so I expect more tense gameplay in this dynamic period of history. -
#thewar from #compassgames, full campaign 1939 - 45, start of Spring 1941. Brits invaded Cherburg but pushed into the channel. Greece become Germany's satellite via poltics, Yugoslavia at war with Italy. Yesterday I've posted 49th post on bgg with questions about game rules, and got answer from designer, that he will be busy next 5 years developing new games, and he wont be able to answer my questions. And my questions are about unrealistic situations in game. Maybe I was too creative) But this is the worst rulebook I've seen. The rules are good. Its just they presented very poorly.

#TheWar from #compassgames. Barbarossa scenario, 2nd try. We are getting the rules better and better. Enjoying the game and time together with my wife. Next stop - scenario 8, D-Day to V-E Day 1944-45.

A highlight of the weekend was seeing The Third World War setup. Mark really wanted to play the complete setup of this #boardgame that was republished by #compassgames
The gang had a great time.

This arrived from Compass Games.
Although I ordered it years ago, when it finally hit I was charged but never received my copy. Compass promised to ship one when it was restocked this month, and here it is.
Very nice edition with a lot of improvements and additions to the original, rules/scenario wise, as well as an upgrade in component quality across the board.
The nice thing about getting it after the restock, errata counters included.

Raiders of the Deep by #compassgames
A solitaire game on commanding a u-boat. The game mostly consists of die rolls & looking up results in tables. One of the similar ilk of solo #boardgames where the players commands a sub, warship, or an aircraft. Unusually this one in set in WW1.
The story the game generates consists of encounters or random events. Stuff happens with the player often having little control. There are still some choices to be made. Essentially a solo RPG in #boardgame form. -
More pics from the #WargameBootcamp at #PaciificonGameeXpo over the long Labor Day weekend.
@zeotter ran A Most Fearful Sacrifice as a participation game across the con. Folks could learn while playing for as long as they wanted. The activation system allowed folks to play small chunks of the game at a time.
Karl taught Prelude to Rebellion by #CompassGames on Saturday.
He also taught Strike Counterstrike (GTS series) by MMP on Sunday.

I have started scenario 2 of Test of Faith. I've played it before but probably a year ago. I've spend a lot of time reading the rules. One thing that helped immensely is an 8 page unofficial errata document that includes official errata and I assume other sources of errata. It cleared up some important questions of mine, such as whether Brigade HQ can provide artillery support like Division HQ. The answer is yes.
I was left with one question about Brigade HQ and them drawing supply. Adam answered this question on BGG. They draw supply from Division HQ the same way as a ground unit, based on number of hexes and not movement points along a road. I never saw this covered in the errata.
There are just so many things to learn and I've never played another OSS game so much of the rules are new to me.

#VCSBG Monday night #boardgames and #craftbeer
First play of 2040 An American Insurgency published by #CompassGames. The #boardgame has an interesting premise of a near future rebellion in the USA. Many mechanics would be familiar to folks who have played Twilight Struggle, Labyrinth, & COIN.
We had a fun time. I would definitely play again but was feel it was hampered by some of the components. Card layout is weak. Playaids have a few errors and omissions. Note the post-it notes on the map. -
#TheWar from #compassgames is my first true ww2 monster. Slowly digesting rules and playing learning scenarios. Expected a little less counter density, but it is manageable. Rules not that hard, but not very well written - some parts of the text could have been thinned, bad formatting, game terms lack consistency sometimes, and editorial work needed. Though I did not found any contradictions (well, found some, but it's not contradiction, just not very clear - and you expect that if rulebook is 120 pages). So far I like the Game. Next - Scenario 4.

2/3 I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with #boardgames published by #compassgames.
Prelude to Revolution has a number of issues:
1. The graphical design has some weaknesses. There are a lot of “organization” counters, that look too similar. In addition the transparent blue plastic cubes are hard to discern. This smacks of a lack of physical component testing.
2. Play balance. This is hard to understand. The developer has released a balance variant. Why was this not caught in playtesting? -
Saturday #boardgames at Gameology Pasadena with the #SoCalWargamers
With John visiting we had enough for the planned game of Border Reivers while Steve and I did a 2-player #boardgame
Prelude to Revolution by #compassgames is a CDG on the politics of Russia from 1905 to 1917. Steve played the Government while I was the Revolutionaries. This was my 4th play and it is further clear that this game is biased towards the Government. So much so the developer has now created a balancing variant.

Started to play TheWar from #compassgames today. Enjoying learning, but rules are written in very specific way and hard to grasp sometimes. I think "rulewriter" is pretty realistic career, just like "gamedesigner", and sometimes you have to forbid one person to be the same.

Just arrived 2040 An American Insurgency #boardgame published by #compassgames
It’s a 2-player CDG with rebels v. the federals in the future USA. The two scenarios have the rebels as the rural mid-west & south or as the coastal urban populace. Red cards are rebels, blue for federals. Familiarity with CDGs or Twilight Struggle #boardgames would make the players feel comfortable.
It’s interesting the designer has taken a generic rebels v government political position. That’s probably wise. -
Another play of the Prelude to Revolution #boardgame by #compassgames
This time teaching @zeotter . I played the Revolutionary side. Setting up the Revolutionaries for the end game is a challenge. Kicking out the Tsar isn’t difficult. Controlling the rise in Unrest, building organizations, all while undermining the loyal Government troops is. Good game though.

My 2nd play of Prelude to Revolution by #CompassGames. This time I was the Government versus Revolutionary Charles. We played all the way through to February 1917 when the Tsar abducted and the people soon revolted despite the Provisional Government being formed. The loyal troops were more numerous despite the people being rather revolutionary. That sealed the win for me. We had fun and learned valuable lessons in the balance of the Duma and the districts.

1st play last night of Prelude to Revolution #boardgame by #compassgames
Mark played the Government, I played the other bad guys 😬
The cards were essentially unknown so we dove in and played with little real idea of how it would go. We soon gained supporters, organized Soviets or Unions while gleefully kicking each other out of the Duma at every opportunity. Russia joining the Great War and forced me to bring in Rasputin to foil the gradual increase in the Tsar’s prestige.

Just arrived from #compassgames
Prelude to Revolution, a 2-player CDG #boardgame on the politics of Russia in the run up to the Revolution. Lots of cards, d6 and custom dice, counters, a mounted mapboard, and a whole bunch of transparent plastic cubes. -
#warforamerica #compassgames #disappointment Played 59 hours total and decided to put it away until totally new rulebook will come over (or I will rewrite it myself). We had a nice time with it, but today we had so many rules problems and strange design decisions - I just can't stand it. Away away.
