  1. #VCSBG Tuesday night #boardgames and #craftbeer at Pedals & Pints in #thousandoaks

I do like #boardgames with dice. The drama. The tactile interaction. The disappointment. #DiceHateMe
I especially like game designs where I can do well despite my poor luck with dice. One such game is Kingsburg. A resource collection through dice placement. The 3 newcomers to the game liked it too. I lost by a single point. GG.

  2. #VCSBG Tuesday night #boardgames and #craftbeer at Pedals & Pints in #thousandoaks

A very wide range of games were played last night. From the quick & simple card games such as No Thanks and Llama; involved euro games such as Aeterna, Lost Ruins of Arnak, and Rock Hard 77; and with a detour into historical consims with Leuthen 1757. Mark had a great night with 5 wins in 6 games. I only won one game but I had a fun time and that's what counts.

  3. #VCSBG Tuesday night #boardgames and #craftbeer at Pedals & Pints in #thousandoaks

Harmonies and Medici, two great small games with striking table presence hit the table.

Meanwhile, Bob and John etc played an oldie but a goodie in Lancaster. I have not played that in yonks. Yet that map seems strangely familiar.
Deception Murder in Hong Kong, and Clank! Catacombs were played on other tables.

  4. Tuesday night #boardgames & #craftbeer with the #VCSBG meetup

With 20 in attendance we snuck in a 2-player #boardgame with Twilight Struggle. Alex is new to TS so it was competitive teaching game. No big surprise but I won. Meanwhile a whole bunch of multiplayer games were including a few that I have never heard of, like Downtown Farmers Market. We finished with a few rounds of Codenames. That’s a game I have definitely heard of before.

  5. Tuesday night #boardgames & #craftbeer with the #VCSBG meetup

As is normal we had some folks play one #boardgame in the whole evening, some play two, while others play a bunch. That's the benefit of having a good sized group & 6 tables at the same time.

I got to play Redneck Life for the first time in absolute yonks. It's a silly game where the journey is the draw. It's not a serious game. Just enjoy the ride. And I had some sweet rides!

  6. Boxing Day of gaming aka #BoxingDOG was 8 hours of #boardgames for the #VCSBG group
I managed to play 5 different games including one #boardgame new to me in Rebirth designed by #reinerkniza . As expected it was mechanically simple but lots of tough mathematical choices.

Rock Hard 77 was a hit again. The easily grasped theme makes the teaching a breeze.
Good times with good people. We also managed to recruit some other bar patrons to the group. Score!

  12. #VCSBG Tuesday night #boardgames and #craftbeer at Pedals & Pints in #thousandoaks

The number of signups almost tripled on the day and we still had a few roll in without an RSVP.  Then some folks arrived a little late so we had to do some jiggling to accommodate everyone.

Games played: Taj Mahal, Undergrove, Nunatak, Call to Adventure, Ticket to ride, Azul, Zombie Dice, Cat in the Box, River Valley Glassworks, Codenames, and Incan Gold.

  13. #VCSBG Monday night #boardgames and #craftbeer in #thousandoaks

A mix of regulars and some newbies last night. Both in games and in the attendees.

It's always good when newbies come back. It's important to introduce newcomers (to modern #boardgames) a fun, challenging, while not overwhelming first game night. Ask some questions and teach them suitable yet solid games in a friendly, and informative manner. All in the hope that they will come back again and again.

  14. #VCSBG Monday night #boardgames and #craftbeer in #thousandoaks

A better turnout and a wide variety of games played this week.

By request I taught the classic #ReinerKnizia #boardgame RA. I did terribly as the RA tokens always came out at the wrong time for my higher value auction tokens. Still a great game though.

Games played included: RA, Archer Love Letter, Trekking the National Parks, Space Base, Huang, Die Hard, Azul, The Gang, Ancient Knowledge, and Love Letter.

  15. What is your go-to introductory #boardgame for absolute newbies?

For a while I have used Azul as it is a fave of mine but have found it a little too abstract for some folks.

With a new venue and an influx of newcomers to our weekly #boardgames & #craftbeer #VCSBG game night I have fallen back on the old gem of Ticket to Ride. The only caveat is that it plays best with 4 players. 3 is too few and 5 too many. While Azul scales well between 2,3 and 4.

  16. The ups and downs of changing the location & day of our weekly #VCSBG #boardgame and #craftbeer #gamenight

Our new location is working out with big, clean tables, friendly staff, a good range of food and drink available (I like the Pale rider Pale Ale btw), and a lively venue. We have recruited new members. Half of the gamers last night were ladies. Welcome.

The lighting and noise levels are tolerable. We have lost a few regulars due to the change of nights.

  17. #boardgames & #craftbeer on Tuesday night at Pedals & Pints in #thousandoaks with the #VCSBG group
We are trialing a new venue for our weekly meetup. Lots of fun and easy to learn games at hand in case other attendees want to take part. No experience required.

  18. Monday night #boardgames & #craftbeer at the Angry Ferret in #Moorpark for the #VCSBG

Good venues for #boardgame events are tough to find: Tables, lighting, noise level, parking, and willingness to regularly host folks are just some. Tasty beers on tap is a nice bonus.

Next week will be our last Monday at the Angry Ferret is closing. Best wishes to Angel & Terry in their future endeavors.

We are looking for a new venue for our weekly open #boardgame night in #VenturaCounty
    Know of any?

  19. Monday night #boardgames & #craftbeer at the Angry Ferret in #Moorpark for the #VCSBG meetup

The Expedition Northwest Passage #boardgame is worker placement, tile laying, but most of all it is a race to explore. The twist is losing people or your ship costs you points too. Get back to Greenland, or find the Northwest Passage before the advancing or retreating artic ice alters your movement options via ship or sled.
A fun and surprisingly thinky game.

  20. Monday night #boardgames & #craftbeer at the Angry Ferret in #Moorpark for the #VCSBG meetup

After teaching the Stone Age #boardgame to some newish gamers last week I challenged them to a rematch this week. They liked the dice based resource collection mechanics. They especially liked the scoring multipliers via the cards. They came back this week and this time I did not win. Excellent!

If you like a game it's a good idea to play it a few times so it sinks in. Next up was Can't Stop

  21. Monday night #boardgames & #craftbeer at the Angry Ferret in #Moorpark for the #VCSBG meetup

First play (for me) of Davy Jones Locker; a co-op #boardgame that soon I realized was not my thing. The game play was power-up your ship and then fight the boss with a tacked on pirate theme. Even so I did my best and we beat the kraken boss. I played it once. Never want to play it again tbh.

We finished with familiar games in Ivanhoe, and then the dice-chucking push-your-luck fun of Can't Stop. GG.

  22. Monday night #boardgames & #craftbeer at the Angry Ferret in #Moorpark for the #VCSBG meetup

Three new (to me) #boardgames with Valletta, New York Zoo, and Romi Rami. I liked them all tbh. Not enough to rush out and buy them. I would play them again.
Valletta did include a full page advert for visiting the island of Malta, I've not seen that before in a board game package.

Meanwhile, Ark Nova, Inner Compass, And War Machine were also played.

  23. Monday night #boardgames & #craftbeer at the Angry Ferret in #Moorpark for the #VCSBG meetip
The Fallout TV series is getting some buzz atm. Was it a good idea to play the #boardgame when I have seen only one TV episode & never played the puter games? It showed, especially when others knowingly reacted when we encountered key plot points and types of creatures. We played the co-op mode. It was fun but not my thing tbh.
Meanwhile, Skyrise was also played. Impressive components indeed.

  24. Monday night #boardgames & #craftbeer at the Angry Ferret in #Moorpark for the #VCSBG meetip
Another non-winning play for me of Heat Pedal to the Metal. I still enjoy it though.
While others played Ceres, Jabbas Palace, and Clank Catacombs I got to play Campaign Manager 2008 again. It's a fun hour-ish card driven #boardgame Although I feel the breaking news cards are a bit swingy. My house rule is to reduce any 2 card value effects to 1. The follow up & similar game Sola Fide fixed the mechanic.

  25. Monday night #VCSBG #boardgames & #craftbeer at the Angry Ferret

A bunch of new and familiar games were played, mostly familiar ones.

Ark Nova, Can't Stop, Doge, The Crew, and one where, unusually for me, I cannot remember the name. That's why I take notes folks. Where was that piece of paper?

I did manage to win two games of Can't Stop. #DiceHateMe

    #boardgame

  26. Monday night #VCSBG #boardgames & #craftbeer at the Angry Ferret

The main course for our table was Keyflower. Other tables played Akropolis and Halloween.

With an extra long Monday session from 4pm-10pm we also played some lighter fare with Incan Gold, Power Hungry Pets, and Wizard.

We ended with 3 plays of 7 Wonders Architects + Medal expansion. As each play was fast we added more players each time until we had 7 for the finale. Thumbs up for the Medal expansion.

  27. Games played included: Amalfi, Power Hungry Pets, The Crew Deep Sea, Sentinels of the Multiverse, Halloween, London (2nd Ed), and Can't Stop.
    #VCSBG

  28. Monday night #VCSBG #boardgames & #craftbeer at the Angry Ferret

London (second edition) #boardgame designed by #MartinWallace
That's the one with poverty cubes. It's always a nice brain burning balance.
We ended with the simple dice rolling fun of Can't Stop.

  29. Monday night #VCSBG #boardgames & #craftbeer at the Angry Ferret

5-player The Quacks of Quedlinburg #boardgame with the herb Witches expansion. We had an interesting mix of effects too. It was fun trying to get synergies with the tile effects.

Next were two game of Ivanhoe by #ReinerKnizia and #GMTGames
It's a great card game with bluffing, deception, and hand management.

Meanwhile the other tables played Heat, Lords of Vegas, Bora Bora and Illimat, and The Fox Experiment.

  30. Monday night #VCSBG #boardgames & #craftbeer at the Angry Ferret

First play of "I Say Holmes!" #boardgame. We got the hang after a few rounds of the table. The card play is follow-the-story style.

I enjoy The Quacks of Quedlinburg yet I have never won. As expected I busted on a 1 in 9 draw. Ha. It's still a fun game though.

Last was another incomplete play of Brigderton love Letter. We ran out of time. That's fine as Love Letter is a great filler/ender style of game.

  31. Monday night #VCSBG #boardgames & #craftbeer at the Angry Ferret

We played a variety of card and board games. From Raiders of the North Sea, Ostia, Hollywood 1947 to The crew and Love Letter. GG

    #Moorpark #conejovalley

  32. 2/2 the rest of the #VCSBG gang played Ostia, Heat, Cubirds, Locana, and Expeditions.

  33. Monday night #VCSBG #boardgames & #craftbeer at the Angry Ferret
The Arkham Horror card game (revised edition) campaign ended in an unmitigated disaster. Some unforced errors combined with over confidence meant that one of us four survived the scenario. Ouch.
With some time remaining at the end of the evening we played the shorter form game of Wizard. Always fun.

My 2nd play of the Europe in Turmoil 2 #boardgame
We tried the short 3 turn Appeasement scenario. It's good there are 3 different length scenarios to allow flexibility in play time. We are still in the honeymoon phase getting to know the events and processes. Check it out if you want a game in the style of #TwilightStruggle
    Game is published by #CompassGames

  35. Monday night #VCSBG #boardgames & #craftbeer

Two new #boardgames on Monday night.
Bloodstones #boardgame designed by #MartinWallace . It's a 1-6 player fantasy wargame with slightly asymmetrical factions and some clever mechanics. It's diceless and uses thick plastic tiles for both cards and the on-map units. The rules are not that complicated but getting to grips with each factions abilities is key to doing well.

Merchants of the Dark Road was played on the other table

  36. Two new #boardgames (for me) at the Monday night #VCSBG #boardgames & #craftbeer
The lone Halloween themed #boardgame was Gravediggers by #reinerknizia. As expected there were some bidding mechanics with a twist. We played twice. Somehow I won both. No comments please.
Next was Hollywood 1947. A hidden traitor game on making films during the Red Scare. It worked well. The patriots lost. The sneaky commies revealed themselves to win the 4th film. Boo.

  37. Monday night #VCSBG #boardgames and #craftbeer in #Moorpark

A Handful of Stars #boardgame. The last game published by the #MartinWallace Treefrog Games back in 2017. Perhaps I should have inventoried the game before yesterday. I had the 3 replacement cards but I was missing one red cube. Luckily, I have oodles of spare cubes. And more luckily I’m glad the missing piece was not some special shaped wooden bit.
AHOS is the last in the “A Few Acres of Snow” trilogy of #boardgames

  38. #Monday night #VCSBG #boardgames & #craftbeer
    Moa #boardgame by #MartinWallace
The teaching is now straightforward after a few recent plays. Despite one player getting an early lead it ended with a close finish.

The night ender for us were 5 missions of The Crew Deep Blue Sea. Such a clever little card game.

  39. Las night was my first play in, yikes, 10 years of A Study in Emerald (1st edition). #boardgame designed by #MartinWallace based on the short story by #neilgaiman of Cthulhu in the age of Sherlock Holmes.
The hidden teams & lowest-loser mechanics make this an enthusiasts game. Not for the faint hearted. We had a blast, literally. It was only a matter of time before assassins & double agents struck. It was a close game. We need to play again soon while the rules are fresh.
    #boardgames #VCSBG

  40. 2/2
Meanwhile Paul and crew played Raiders of the North Sea with some of the expansions. They finished the night with a few games of the clever #ReinerKnizia card game High Society.

A few folks showed up after we had got settled. Cheers to Lawrence and to Robert for taking care of the newcomers. Now they know there is a Meetup group we can know to keep an eye out for them. Robert taught Hollywood 1947, a social deduction #boardgame themed on commies in the movie industry.

  41. Monday night #VCSBG #boardgames & #craftbeer

Another play for Moa designed by #MartinWallace. This time it took half the time to play. Once again I came second.

Next up was Istanbul. A game I have no recollection of playing before. But I have. Cheers to #BGG for having a better memory that I have.

Last game for the night was Savannah Park. It's a light tile movement/placement #boardgame that is simple but challenging. And I don't just mean finding the specific tiles on the your board.

    1/2

  42. Monday night #VCSBG #boardgames & #craftbeer

First play for Moa designed by #MartinWallace. This has been on my #shelfofshame for 5 years. It was good to get it played although we did do one thing slightly wrong. For such a simple-ish #boardgame the rules could have been better. Inconsistent terminology usage and key concepts buried deep in paragraphs of text. How about a bit of highlighting of key text.

It was a close game. I came second via the tie-breaker!

  43. #VCSBG Monday night #boardgames and #craftbeer

First play of 2040 An American Insurgency published by #CompassGames. The #boardgame has an interesting premise of a near future rebellion in the USA. Many mechanics would be familiar to folks who have played Twilight Struggle, Labyrinth, & COIN.
We had a fun time. I would definitely play again but was feel it was hampered by some of the components. Card layout is weak. Playaids have a few errors and omissions. Note the post-it notes on the map.

  44. 5/5
    #ConQuestVentura

It was good to play games with folks new to me. Hopefuly some new folks will join the #VCSBG #boardgame meetup.

Btw, some advice when typing you name into the con badge system. Check your spelling. Even short names like Tim can be misspelled.

  45. Monday night #VCSBG #boardgames & #craftbeer.
Ready Set Bet was played with the app instead of a GM. We experimented with different timings for the app. 5 seconds per horse movement roll was too slow. 2 was too fast. 3.5 was about right. I didn’t win. It’s a fun horse racing/betting game though.
Medici is another tight yet simple #reinerknizia #boardgame design. It’s always useful to have a simple yet thinky option that actually works with 6 players.
Tekhenku, Love Letter etc were also played.

  46. Monday night #VCSBG #boardgames & #craftbeer at the Angry Ferret in Moorpark. As is often the case we played a mix of new and familiar games. The Shiver is a pop-up co-op game with many versus the game. Austin did a great job keeping us players on track. Bob taught another new game in Space Station Phoenix.
I lost at Can't Stop. No surprise there. #DiceHateMe
    #boardgame

  47. It’s official. #VenturaCounty is getting a #tabletopgames convention. #ConQuestVentura will take place in July 2023 in the heart of historic San Buenaventura, CA. That’s halfway between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara on the PCH.
Lots of space for open #boardgames, #rpgs, and scheduled events. There will be special Guest of Honor in Luke Gygax. Hope to see you there!
    #VCSBG #ventura #socal

  48. Pictures from the first ConQuest Ventura Game Day at the the historic Dudley House in #ventura. Thanks to Mondo & the two Tinas for organizing & food etc.
A good mix of #VCSBG regulars were in attendance, plus folks we have not seen in yonks, and a bunch of new faces too. Welcome.
Thanks to all of those who brought and taught #boardgames. I got to learn 3 new games and introduced folks to a variety myself.
The next game day is at the end of February. #VenturaCounty #ConQuestVentura

  49. Monday night #boardgames & #craftbeer with the #VCSBG Meetup. Beforehand, I suggested “Tulip Bubble”. Been trying to get it played for a while. Paul volunteered in advance and we recruited two others. The game went the maximum turns. Paul got the timing correct and purchased the Black Tulip on the last turn. I came last. It’s an interesting investment/value manipulation game.
Glad to get another #boardgame off the #ShelfOfShame
    1/3

  50. Monday night #VCSBG #boardgames & #craftbeer in a rainy #Moorpark. Half the signups dropped out early due to the storms & flood warnings. We don’t regularly play 2-player games. Paul wanted to play Dice Throne so we arrived early to chuck dice around. Another game off his #ShelfOfShame. After seeing Red Rising played I was interested. Omg, so many cards to read. But tough card combo choices. I may have to read the books. Last game was old familiar Clank! + Mummy map. Great for a fast game.
