After reading this, I thought about several of the temporary and substitute college teaching positions I had as a recent art school graduate in 1980’s Southern California. Freeway faculty they called it. They wanted to compare my work with other candidates they had already decided upon. Final transition to departments full of part time faculty with no tenure.
