Hence, I became so passively-aggressively resistant to all that my father represented.

Not the desired goal, but the method produced a different kind of strength.

He had watched Fox calmly coddle eggs as his flat was turned upside down by five police officers.
The moment Fox invited the Inspector to stay on for supper, was the moment the Inspector turned his attention to other suspects.
The moment the Inspector had declined supper and exited the flat, was the moment Fox began to plan what to do with the money stashed in the oven.
