Ah, #CLOCKSS, the #digital time vault where #academic librarians and publishers play pretend archaeologists, "preserving" #digital knick-knacks for #future #generations 🕰️📚. Meanwhile, the rest of us are stuck wondering why anyone would want to save that 2002 PDF of "Ye Olde Conference Proceedings" 🤔🔍.

Curious.
Missing something?
For the journal Heterocycles, CLOCKSS appears to have volume 1, no. 1 and volume 1, no. 3
but not volume 1, no. 2
Now I have to check if volume 1, no. 2 ever existed... [it seems it didn't, lol]
https://triggered.edina.clockss.org/ServeContent?issn=1881-0942&volume=1

Today's task:
download all of the Heterocycles material that has been newly made available at CLOCKSS.
I want to see:
a) if it's all there (it probably is)
b) see how much of it is grant funded research, and from which funders. I think there are lessons to be learned here for funders (and research performing orgs, and authors, and others)... but we'll start with funders
great to finally have access to it 👍

Also, 205 days is significantly longer than the contractual minimum of 183 days (six months).
Are we going to review why there was a delay of more than 3 weeks in excess of the minimum date the content could (ought?) to have been triggered-at & made available?
-
At least 205 continuous days where the journal was not available online, all for what... was it worth waiting that long?
Does anyone think we should wait a bit less next time this happens?
Would you wait that long if it was a journal full of cancer research?
-
Trying a new approach with #Heterocycles now.
I'm emailing authors who have recently (within the last 10 years) published more than 1 article in the journal, to see what they think about both the publisher taking it offline, and the inaction from CLOCKSS to remedy the situation.

Time to update the CLOCKSS? Why hasn't Heterocycles been released yet? https://rossmounce.co.uk/2024/06/11/time-to-update-the-clockss/

TIL about https://clockss.org/triggered-content/ from https://mastodon.social/@rmounce/112399905807481019
I've known about #CLOCKSS forever, but not the above URL, or I forgot.
Anyway, cool, even if I'm learning about the URL because it isn't working as well as it should, background in https://rossmounce.co.uk/2024/04/11/things-we-can-learn-from-the-ongoing-heterocycles-debacle/ and updates posted by @rmounce

I emailed the executive director of CLOCKSS late last Friday to ask some basic questions about #Heterocycles
No reply yet, but I'm hopeful..
-
My daily routine:
1.) go to the CLOCKSS triggered content page: https://clockss.org/triggered-content/
2.) Ctrl+F "Heterocycles"
0/0 matches3. ) *sigh*
Can we pretty please have access to the 17,000+ chemistry articles published in Heterocycles? Will we really have to (pointlessly) wait until June 1st 2024 before this stuff becomes available online again?
-
For those wondering when #CLOCKSS can open access to their copies of the chemistry journal #Heterocycles, which a number of readers have noted has been offline for a while: 6 months from the time it becomes "unavailable from any publisher", unless the publisher OKs an earlier release, per their standard publisher agreement: https://clockss.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/CLOCKSS-Participating-Publisher-Agreement-2024.pdf (Thanks to Grouse on Metafilter for the link to the agreement.) #preservation

#CLOCKSS has one job. And it's failing in it, catastrophically. https://rossmounce.co.uk/2024/04/11/things-we-can-learn-from-the-ongoing-heterocycles-debacle/
What, really is it for, if not to release articles that have been offline for four months due to publisher failure?
-
It would be a lot of fun to create a chart demonstrating out of the 17,000+ vanished articles at Heterocycles, which ones were funded by e.g. NSF, BBSRC, Estonian Science Foundation, Wellcome Trust, et cetera.
Then email each of those funders asking what they think about the situation - that online access to this research they have funded has gone.

In more lovely #digipres #scholcomm news...
#Medknow was bought by #WoltersKluwer and now some 10 % of the 10.4103 #DOI's are broken, pointing to a default lww.com or journals.lww.com frontpage.
That's without counting the minority cases which give you either a #Thieme 404, a broken OJS install or a #CLOCKSS copy through chooser.crossref.org, etc.

Happy World Digital Preservation Day #WDPD2023! Did you know about the PKP Preservation Network for #OpenJournalSystems journals?
