When it comes to my taste in music, TV, and film, I honestly feel like I was born in the wrong era. Being 32 and born in 1991, Right now I’m watching The Circus (1928) by Charlie Chaplin, and I’ve got to say, this is pure brilliance. You can hear the British humour shining through, even without dialogue. Just Chaplin, physical comedy, and music. And it cracks me up more than most modern comedies ever could.

For me, the golden age of comedy lives with people like Chaplin, Laurel & Hardy, Carry On, and Monty Python. Slapstick, timing, and a kind of playful silliness that made you laugh until it hurt. Take Laurel & Hardy trying to carry a piano upstairs, only for it to crash right back down, that’s still funnier to me than 90% of what comes out today.

Modern comedy often feels too serious, too focused on making points instead of making people laugh. Don’t get me wrong, there are some great stand-ups now, and I enjoy comedians like Russell Howard, Gabriel Iglesias, and Jeff Dunham. But what makes them shine is when they mix in that childlike humour, absurdity, or slapstick.

Watching The Circus today reminded me: you don’t need dialogue, special effects, or even words to make something timelessly funny. Just brilliant timing, physical expression, and a willingness to make fun of yourself.

Why can’t we bring back more of that kind of comedy today?

I am doing this big'ish refactor of environment variables for a repo where they are, and not to understate this, A!FUCK!ING!MESS! in all sorts of multiple declarations, people just not understanding how env vars work at all, and failing closed on really bad defaults. None of the variables are being validated, but I won't get crazy about that except for the true/false ones that need to be atoms.

The fucked up thing is just how much entropy is present in just this simple set of 3-4 files. The ownership is absent, so there is no care for the code. "Code is Craft" isn't applicable here, because nobody is given the opportunity to truly own their craft. I'm sure I'm not in the minority.

But anyway what I'd LOVE to do is iterate on sections of these six dozen env vars in different sections and push the changes quickly and know I'm on the right track. But our deploy process here is *so broken* and takes *so long* and would undoubtedly *hit a blocker* because someone *else* is having a problem with the deploy pipeline. So I am stuck doing what I hate, which is building a huge PR. Hopefully though it will "just work" and the configuration settings will be transparent. That's the goal. That will not happen until it fails a few times.

Nevertheless, we (as a team) don't put release timing as a constraint on ourselves, so we are abused by it when it fails. Like my big ugly PR will do.

I need a new #carryon #luggage, a #trolley and I want your opinions:

I'm leaning towards 2 wheels (in contrast to 4 or 8 wheels) because:
- better on rough surface
- doesn't float around in bus/train (8-wheelers with wheel locks by #Hinomoto exist very rarely)
- was OK so far for me, so the advantages of more wheels are not worth the downsides(?)

Furthermore, I'm inclined to take a semi soft case (in contrast to soft or hard cases - latter in Polycarbonite or Polypropylene):
- much more robust when handled after occasional check-in
- can be squeezed when necessary
- supports sufficiently for, e.g., transport of LP records
- has a certain structure that supports packing with #packingcubes (you need those!)
- no scratches

Must haves:
- airplane compatible size
- side-handle
- expandable top handle
- good and large wheels

Not necessary:
- internal straps and compartments

Is it really worth the price when buying something beyond the 80€ class of #trolleys?

In the safety briefing, they tell you that in the event that you need to evacuate the plane, you DO NOT STOP to get your carry-on luggage or anything else. You just go.

And my partner just saw video from the crash, with some asshole coming out of the plane dragging a gigantic suitcase.

The plane was upside-down, with wings broken off, and on fire. This was pretty much the textbook definition of "emergency evacuation".

Hey, jerk, what if you slowing everything down to grab your oh-so-important suitcase resulted in people behind you burning to death?

Can we find that guy, and charge him with something serious? "I'm too important to leave my carry-on behind, I don't care if it puts others at risk" is NOT OKAY.
