  1. The letter Alef is not just the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet; it is a symbol of beginnings and holds a special place in various aspects of Hebrew life and learning.

Unlike the English alphabet, where letters like A, B, and C are just symbols with associated sounds, Hebrew letters have names and meanings. The Hebrew equivalent of the letter A is Alef ื pronounced 'a-lef.

In the Hebrew calendar, the first day of every month is /'a-lef/ followed by the Hebrew "in [the Hebrew month name].

The first grade in Israeli schools is called /kee-'tah 'a-lef/ ื›ึผึดืชึผึธื” ื, marking the beginning of a child's formal education.

So while we always call this letter Alef, we can write it ืึธืœึถืฃ ir in short ื with or without a ' sign to its left.

Alef functions as both a vowel and a consonant (following my method for learning Hebrew).
