  1. I hear "big Jew tax" in Larry David's voice in my head.

"Jewish communal #security spending has hit a record high, surpassing $1 billion a year ($1.015b), new data from the #Jewish Federations of North America (#JFNA) revealed ahead of the #HighHolidays.

The new #study finds that the average spend across over 4,500 Jewish communal institutions amounts to roughly $225,000 per institution. This represents a 33% increase compared to the previous estimate of $765 million in 2024. These institutions include Jewish community centers, #synagogues, schools, summer camps, and other Jewish nonprofit institutions.

JFNA's analysis does not include privately owned businesses, such as over 1,600 #kosher restaurants, some 500 kosher markets and groceries, and the #Judaica shops and Jewish bookstores found in Jewish neighborhoods across #NorthAmerica."

  2. Not a flattering review given the lens chosen. IDGAF. My copy gets here today and I'm looking forward to it. Pun intended.

"A few days after I started #reading #DaraHorn’s new #book, I was called a “#kike” for the first time to my face.

It was a sunny afternoon and I was wearing my Newsguild shirt. A person on the sidewalk, deshabille, possibly collecting junk, asked what union I was in. Against my better judgment I engaged, believing them to be a fellow worker. I said I was a journalist. They then decided I was a “fascist” and “complicit.”

“Do you like writing about the #genocide in #Palestine? The war in #Iran?” they asked me, trailing me past a #Judaica store in a very #Jewish neighborhood.

#Horn’s The #FinalSolution to #theJewishQuestion: A Love Story for the Living, her latest provocatively-titled #nonfiction book is a survey of #antisemitism past and present and the ways #Jews explain ourselves to the world. At its heart, it is about #education."

  3. You might remember a week or so ago I posted what a hard time I was having with my fairy door shadow box beta test. And much to my pleasant surprise, it actually came out very pretty well after a bit of wailing and gnashing of teeth.

I'm not sure I'm going to put in on the Artisans Co-op page, but if you'd like a copy, I now have some solid back boxes and can make you one. DM me to let me know.

  5. Israel and the so-called American Jewish monolith

Indeed, one only has to look at the rhetoric extremists have used since the military conflict with Iran…

  10. 📖 Tevye the Dairyman & Motl the Cantor's Son 📚

As a big fan of Fiddler on the Roof, I decided I should read the original Tevye stories. First published in 1894, Tevye 'tells' Aleichem the tales of his family, focusing on six of his seven daughters, Tzeitel, Chava, Hodel, Shprintze, Taybele, and Bielke. I was surprised by how different these tales proved to be from musical.
But the highlight here is the delightful adventures of the 'orphan' Motl in Aleichem's unfinished novel Motl and the Cantor's Son. These tales take us on the journey from poverty in the Shtetl, across Europe to the promise land of America. Motls' take on life is endearing and funny. I am amazed that these stories have never made it to film!

  13. Matzah Bakery

"I based this illustration off a photo I took at the matzah bakery in Kiryat Sanz (Netanya, Israel). The bakers were being timed by a rabbi with a stopwatch (not pictured), to ensure the entire process, from beginning to end, doesn’t exceed the strict 18-minute time frame required for kosher matzahs."

  14. I understand, starting to learn a new language, especially one as unique as Hebrew, can bring up a lot of fears and doubts.

You might be wondering, "Will it take months to get the hang of this? Will I even be able to grasp it?"

Let me reassure you, with my best-selling Hebrew 1, 2, and 3 series, these worries can be put to rest.

  15. #Epiphany
I think my parents used to just call anything they personally didn't like (mainly certain foods or particular food preparations) "goyishe".

I think most of it had nothing to do with culture and just had everything to do with their particular tastes.

    Examples: mayonnaise, alcohol

  16. @usluck Wow. Lots to unpack here. Tanks, bombs, a rubber stamp (?), a devilish magnate pushing buttons, Star of Davis as the axis of the world, more buttons, more Cyrillic, and a bookmarked Mein Kampf! And #Hebrew text! Yiddish? Anarchist pamphlet? I've never seen the like!

  17. Since we can't afford to live inside the eruv, I am making a #DIY #Shabbos key belt out of a discarded tefilin strap. I'm going to have to ask the rabbi if it's going to work but I based it off of the design of some chabadnik who doesn't hold by the eruv so it should be ok
