This Shrub Is Ideal for Attracting Butterflies to Your Yard—and It's So Easy to Grow
This charming shrub will bring all the pollinators to your yard, and it'll look good while doing it.

Published on July 24, 2025Key takeaways:
- #Buttonbush is a beautiful, low-maintenance native shrub that blooms all summer and thrives in wet, sunny spots.
- It’s a magnet for butterflies, #bees, and birds, making it a standout for #PollinatorFriendly gardens.
- Gardeners love buttonbush because it adds visual interest to the garden, supports beneficial insects and wildlife, and it provides a solution for those hard-to-plant wet areas in the yard."Buttonbush is a deciduous shrub that's native to most of the United States, aside from the Pacific Northwest and some western states. It's known for its pincushion-like flowers, which are typically white (or sometimes pale pink), and bloom on the plant from June through September. Buttonbush loves wet conditions, so it's great for rain gardens, swampy parts of your yard, or even just anywhere near a waterway or pond. While buttonbush is resilient, it'll thrive best in full sun and in neutral to slightly acidic soil that is consistently moist.
"Pruning is also an important part of buttonbush care, since it can become scraggly and irregular when left untrimmed. To keep the plant looking full and to maintain its shape, remove dead or damaged branches in late winter or early spring. "

Buttonbush fruits. Came across these several years ago, not knowing what they were at the time. Wondered if they were "buttonbush" due to their shape, which made for an easy ID🙂

Delaware & Raritan Canal Park Trail and Kingston Branch Loop Trail
On July 4, I went on a bicycle ride. The Home Owner Association had approved the replacement of the rear decks of the housing units on my street. Demolition work had started earlier in mid-June, and they had only just started preparing to construct new stairs and decks. I was not able to access the gas grill in the backyard. This one here is for the #FlowersOnFriday hashtag.
Isn't it just so pretty? If my research is right then this is a yellow buttonbush flower that I found in Canberra, Australia, where I marvelled at its beauty and of course had to take a picture of it to eventually share with you all later ;)

Since joining Mastodon I have come to appreciate it as a photography platform.
On Flickr you have to click through to see commentary. But sometimes context is helpful.
For example, this is a flower of California Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis), a native plant in the coffee family. It is found near rivers and streams in California's Central Valley, wehre it is a popular nectar plant for butterflies.
