#SeedSavingExchange - Learn how to create a garden that will attract #NativePollinators with #SeedSaving in mind.
Excerpt:
"Serve Up an Enticing Menu Year-Round
Flowering plants supply #pollinators like #bees and #butterflies with essential pollen and nectar. #PollinatorFriendly plants also provide a safe shelter for our hard-working insect friends. The most important aspect of any pollinator garden is diversity. Because pollinators are active from April to October, make sure you have a colorful array of continuously blooming flowers from early spring through fall and keep your plants free of pesticides, fungicides, and insecticides.
Plants should be selected based on the space they will occupy. Specifically, consider your space’s soil type, sun exposure, and moisture levels.
You may also choose to select plant species to support specific pollinators.
- To help monarch butterflies, include #milkweeds and high-quality nectar plants like blazingstars.
- To support #Bumblebees, include plants like #WildBergamot, #hyssop, and #goldenrod.
- #Sunflowers offer not only a supportive perch but also seeds to help attract #hummingbirds and other feathered friends to your garden. #Honeysuckles are also a great way to attract hummingbirds. To ensure that the pollinators will have something to forage from spring through fall, select various natives that flower at different times throughout the growing season. Choosing plants with a variety of flower colors and shapes will also help attract an assortment of insects of a variety of sizes and foraging habits. Larger clusters of a plant species are better for attracting pollinators than several smaller clusters in and around the garden space."

In the midst of a Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Mariesii Lilacina’ grows a self-sown Achillea, maybe Yarrow, hard to know and very difficult to spot. Their flowers are absolutely identical in colour. Even their flower heads are similar in shape. Is this a case of perfect colour harmony or plant intelligence using colour as camouflage?

I planted this border in the garden predominantly with ornamental grasses, interplanted with tall perennials - and, of course, wildflowers, a.k.a. weeds. Couldn’t begin to list all the individuals, who live in there.

Boost bean pollination naturally! Plant climbing sweet peas beside your beans. They’ll twine up the same stakes or wire, and the sweet peas’ scent draws in pollinators—who’ll also visit your bean flowers. A beautiful, bee-friendly combo! #gardenhack #pollinatorfriendly #growyourown

The blue flowering Salvia nemorosa 'Ostfriesland' are doing particularly well this year, their flowers have already lasted a long time. I love the combination of the Salvia with the fluffy Stipa tenuissima ‘Ponytail'.

Previously, a small part of the garden by the side of the house was only grass, a tree, a few shrubs and hedging to the side and back - and it was a bit unloved.
Since the transformation, the distinction between inside and outdoors has been blurred. Sitting in the living room you can now not be quite certain where you are. The garden seems to be intent on coming into the house.
I have written this as a blog post: https://www.wolfkettler.com/blog/this-morning-in-the-garden#ArtistsGarden #ImperfectGarden #garden #gardener #gardening #GardenPhotography #Artist #wolfkettler #Photography #GardenWiltshire #WiltshireGarden #Wiltshire #sustainable #summer #bloomscrolling #biodiversity #natural #NaturalGarden #WeedGardening #weeds #wildflowers #WildlifeFriendly #PlanetFriendly #PollinatorFriendly #ecology #climate #ClimateChange #conservation #sustainability #SelfSown

I have been busy in the garden and I have revamped my website. Also decided that I would *try* to keep the ‘journal’, a.k.a. blog, a little more up-to-date.

Some really good ideas here... Replacing #TallGrasses with #Sedges, getting rid of #Periwinkle (though maybe not all of it, since it is an early flowering plant), replacing #Pachysandra with #SweetWoodruff, etc., etc.
17 #TickAttracting Plants You Should Avoid In Your Yard (And What To Grow Instead)
By Hattie Grigsby
July 15, 2025"A stunning yard shouldn’t double as a tick playground—but surprisingly, some popular landscape plants invite them in. Dense groundcovers like pachysandra or #ivy create cool, shaded spots where ticks love to hide, making your outdoor space riskier than it looks.
"Swapping those out for smarter choices can make a big difference. Consider tick-resistant alternatives like #lavender, #rosemary, or ornamental grasses—plants that still offer beauty without creating cozy tick hangouts. Plus, many of these double as #PollinatorFriendly and #DroughtTolerant options."

#RockportME - #PollinatorFriendly Vs. #Ornamental Flowers
April 8 @ 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM
#RockportPublicLibrary"#Birds, #bats, #bees, #butterflies, #beetles, and other small mammals are integral pollinators whose natural activities sustain our ecosystems. However, many people fill their gardens with over-hybridized plant varieties that have been bred for their ornamental value. #DoubleBlooms, exotic species, and other engineered qualities — while pretty — create plants that are difficult for all pollinators and can be detrimental to local habitats when cultivated in large numbers (like pollenless sunflowers).
"Maine Master Gardener Volunteer #JohnFromer will discuss varieties of flowering plants that are both beautiful and valuable to our local pollinators, give examples of non-pollinator friendly flowers, and provide tips for growing these in the #Midcoast region.
"This talk is part of the Rockport Library’s Spring Horticulture Series in partnership with Merryspring Nature Center."
