  7. As I said before, happiness is an overflowing garden. Here, the paved path from the patio to the pond is becoming almost impassable. As I walk, the plants grab me and touch my skin. Beautiful!
    Again - Good: Walk barefoot.
Better: Barefoot + bare arms and legs.
Best: Shed your clothes altogether if your garden is sufficiently private.
Heightens your senses, brightens the dullest day and banishes gloomy thoughts.

  8. Some really good ideas here... Replacing #TallGrasses with #Sedges, getting rid of #Periwinkle (though maybe not all of it, since it is an early flowering plant), replacing #Pachysandra with #SweetWoodruff, etc., etc.

17 #TickAttracting Plants You Should Avoid In Your Yard (And What To Grow Instead)

    By Hattie Grigsby
    July 15, 2025

"A stunning yard shouldn’t double as a tick playground—but surprisingly, some popular landscape plants invite them in. Dense groundcovers like pachysandra or #ivy create cool, shaded spots where ticks love to hide, making your outdoor space riskier than it looks.

"Swapping those out for smarter choices can make a big difference. Consider tick-resistant alternatives like #lavender, #rosemary, or ornamental grasses—plants that still offer beauty without creating cozy tick hangouts. Plus, many of these double as #PollinatorFriendly and #DroughtTolerant options."

  9. #OldTownME #PublicLibrary - What is a #SeedLibrary?

"A Seed Library is a community-driven resource where people can borrow seeds, grow them, and then return some of the harvest’s seeds to share with others. It's a fantastic way to promote biodiversity, sustainability, and self-sufficiency within our community. By participating, you contribute to the preservation of unique, locally-adapted plant varieties while helping others grow their own food.

    How It Works
    - Borrow Seeds: Visit our Seed Library and browse through the available varieties. Choose the seeds that fit your gardening space and needs.
    - Plant and Grow: Take the seeds home and plant them! We provide helpful gardening tips and instructions to help you grow your plants successfully.
    - Save and Return Seeds: At the end of the growing season, save seeds from your healthiest, most productive plants. Then, return these seeds to the library for others to borrow.

Why Participate in Our Seed Library?
    - Promote #Biodiversity: Help preserve and propagate locally-adapted plants.
    - Access to Free Seeds: #Gardening should be accessible to everyone, and we believe in removing barriers like seed cost.
    - #Sustainable Gardening: By saving and sharing seeds, we create a cycle of sustainability that benefits the environment and community.
    - Build #Community: Our Seed Library fosters collaboration, education, and a deeper connection with nature and neighbors.

    What Seeds Do We Offer?

We offer a wide variety of seeds that are well-suited to our local climate and conditions. Some of the seed varieties we offer include:
    - Vegetables: Tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, peas, carrots, and more!
    - Herbs: Basil, oregano, thyme, mint, and rosemary.
    - Flowers: Sunflowers, zinnias, marigolds, and other #PollinatorFriendly flowers.
    - #NativePlants: Local species that support #pollinators and other #wildlife."

  10. The bottom of the garden. Confusingly, the garden slopes *up* towards the bottom.
Bottom left the pond. The brick construction on the right is what we call the folly. Bees, other insects, birds and pond dwelling individuals love it. So do I.
Planted to feel and look natural, wild, full and overflowing. Weeds a.k.a. wildflowers are welcome.

  11. Happiness is an overflowing garden. At this time of the year, I cannot walk through the garden without the plants grabbing me and touching my skin. The garden is overflowing, difficult to navigate, easy to lose yourself in and hide from everyone else. Beautiful!

Better: Barefoot + bare arms and legs.
Best: Shed your clothes altogether if your garden is sufficiently private.

  18. Boost bean pollination naturally! Plant climbing sweet peas beside your beans. They’ll twine up the same stakes or wire, and the sweet peas’ scent draws in pollinators—who’ll also visit your bean flowers. A beautiful, bee-friendly combo! #gardenhack #pollinatorfriendly #growyourown

  19. #RockportME - #PollinatorFriendly Vs. #Ornamental Flowers

    April 8 @ 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM
    #RockportPublicLibrary

"#Birds, #bats, #bees, #butterflies, #beetles, and other small mammals are integral pollinators whose natural activities sustain our ecosystems. However, many people fill their gardens with over-hybridized plant varieties that have been bred for their ornamental value. #DoubleBlooms, exotic species, and other engineered qualities — while pretty — create plants that are difficult for all pollinators and can be detrimental to local habitats when cultivated in large numbers (like pollenless sunflowers).

"Maine Master Gardener Volunteer #JohnFromer will discuss varieties of flowering plants that are both beautiful and valuable to our local pollinators, give examples of non-pollinator friendly flowers, and provide tips for growing these in the #Midcoast region.

"This talk is part of the Rockport Library’s Spring Horticulture Series in partnership with Merryspring Nature Center."

  20. This Shrub Is Ideal for Attracting Butterflies to Your Yard—and It's So Easy to Grow

This charming shrub will bring all the pollinators to your yard, and it'll look good while doing it.

    By Morgan Noll
    Published on July 24, 2025

    Key takeaways:

    - #Buttonbush is a beautiful, low-maintenance native shrub that blooms all summer and thrives in wet, sunny spots.
    - It’s a magnet for butterflies, #bees, and birds, making it a standout for #PollinatorFriendly gardens.
    - Gardeners love buttonbush because it adds visual interest to the garden, supports beneficial insects and wildlife, and it provides a solution for those hard-to-plant wet areas in the yard.

"Buttonbush is a deciduous shrub that's native to most of the United States, aside from the Pacific Northwest and some western states. It's known for its pincushion-like flowers, which are typically white (or sometimes pale pink), and bloom on the plant from June through September. Buttonbush loves wet conditions, so it's great for rain gardens, swampy parts of your yard, or even just anywhere near a waterway or pond. While buttonbush is resilient, it'll thrive best in full sun and in neutral to slightly acidic soil that is consistently moist.

"Pruning is also an important part of buttonbush care, since it can become scraggly and irregular when left untrimmed. To keep the plant looking full and to maintain its shape, remove dead or damaged branches in late winter or early spring. "
