  1. Does anyone have a tool they prefer for #writing printable #books, committing it in #git, and rendering it as static html site (or maybe just good navigation in #codeberg itself), and also rendering a nice #pdf with table of contents, footers, indices, etc.? Something like #mdbook, #bookdown, #pandoc, or the like? I'm flexible with the exact syntax of the docs. I'm using mdbook with mdbook-pdf at the moment. I haven't tried mdbook-latex yet. (Using something like jinja would be nice.)

  2. Argh, is bookdown.org...down?

  3. I just updated the tutorial for the r.suitability.regions addon for . I took the opportunity to change it from the excellent to the even better format, which is what I use for my website as well. In my experience, Quarto format offers a more streamlined experience and more out-of-the-box options to tweak the page layout, placement of figures, etc.

You can find the tutorial on ecodiv.earth/TutorialsNotes/Su

  4. @hsorlie I wrote tutorials and other content in both using the package and . They are very similar.

The newer Quarto took a lot of good stuff from Bookdown, but it also offers convenient extra's and i.m.h.o. a more streamlined experience. Dealing with figures and page layout is much easier, for example.

Converting from one to the other isn't that difficult, I actually just migrated one of my older tutorials from Bookdown to Quarto.

  5. Call out to anyone who writes technical docs for the web (e.g., for students) -- what are the benefits of book down relative to pretex? I've written up a big doc in pretex, but its syntax is a PITA. Can I do about the same thing with book down? #bookdown #pretex

  6. I (think I) would like to write my article based #PhD #thesis in #rstudio. The finished articles are written with #RMarkdown and #papaja, so I’m sort of used to the format, but now I need to write a compilation or synopsis. I’ve heard of the #bookdown package, but I’m also looking at finally going #quarto. Any advice? Packages, or tips and tricks? #rstats

  7. November 6. Number of #NaNoWriMo words written: 0. I'm great at maintaining losing streaks ✍️ 📔 😊. In my defence still finishing up coursework submissions for the data analysis course. Done so much work in #R recently for LOLs might try any NaNoWriMo scrieving using the #Bookdown package

I haven't used it personally, but I hear good things about "Learning Stats with R" and it looks like the #bookdown version uses #tidyverse

  9. @pokateo I keeping on learning about how to engineer a good package, plus: finally got around to diving into (guess I managed to skip )

  10. Phew, it was a lot of tinkering, but my #flowchart|s for my #thesis came out really nice. Made with the #rstats library #DiagrammeR and #graphviz and rendered with #knitr, #bookdown and #latex via #rstudio .

The #mermaid integration is just broken for latex-based pdfs, which is sad because mermaid is just really nice with its easy syntax. graphviz has at least more power and is embeddable as a vector pdf file.

  11. @analyst42 @chrisbeeley I used for a public site and for internal things I just can't share, like connection strings. It's surprising how often I get to share the links to public posts compared to internal links.

  12. @ingorohlfing i gave my undergrad with little R background the task of converting our lab protocols into a webpage. She spent several days with #bookdown before switching to #quarto . She said #quarto is much easier!

  13. @maryErudis I'm switching from to . Overall a smooth transition, not in the least thanks to the good documentation. Differences with RMarkdown are small, but includes some clear improvements. Overall, I'm a happy user 😊

  15. @yabellini all of our #psyteachr materials (UofGlasgow School of Psychology and Neuroscience) are made using #rstats markdown and #bookdown if that is any use? Wide selection of different books - stats teaching, data skills, visualisations, glossary. Feel free to check them out. Links to #github pages are there as well

  16. CW: New publication on collaborative writing with GitLab

@vickysteeves Yes, #Markdown is huge in the R-context. Do you have any experience with R #Bookdown? The #R environment can be used to write and publish books in HTML via #GitBook, as PDF and as EPUB. There is also a #Docker Image to be used for collaborative book writing with #GitLab.
