It's still a little breezy out there, and when I wandered around to the shops for eggs and wine, this little corella was having fun spinning on the end of a casuarina branch. There's other corellas and a cockatoo in there as well.

Walking yesterday in a stiff breeze under clouds, north from the Newcastle Ocean Baths, we saw quite a few birds. The usual black shag sentinels on lamp posts, of course, but also a couple of shags hunting fish, sooty oystercatchers, pelicans, terns socialising near the surf, and some type of bird of prey – not a sea eagle, smaller than that.
Here are the terrible photos I took with my phone. The bird of prey was being buffeted by the winds and had the sun almost behind it, but if anyone knows what it is from this bad photo, please elucidate.

Painfully glorious at Lake Macquarie this morning. And with a steak and kidney pie for breakfast and a feathered breakfast companion.

After shopping, we sat down at the lake for a salad lunch – i.e. a packet of chips and a beer each. DW had a gluten free Hahn lager, I had a longneck of Coopers stout.
We watched a procession of little pied shags and a little black shag working over the pool in the lake at Toronto. They kept popping up for a breath (and maybe a swallow). The shark fence around the pool is no challenge for these birds, they seem to just swim through the holes.
Also seen:
• 2 high flying white-bellied sea eagles
• a flock of low flying toddlers (corellas)
• tiny swallows sitting on huge piers
• a bloke hooning on a hydrofoil board -

On my Thursday walk to the shops there were four swamp hens grazing on the greenery near the path. Always a pleasure to see.

After lunch we had a walk around the ocean baths at Newcastle NSW. Here's a bunch of sooty oystercatchers settling in for the night on the rocks just past the baths.
Just after this, with the sun dipping, we saw dolphins working the waters around the baths. At least four, likely five or more. Always a wee thrill!

Here's the Afrocarpus tree in all its glory, decorated with sulphur-crested cockatoos. Underneath, you can see how much debris they drop while eating.

Yesterday on our way to "lunch" on Beaumont Street around 4:40pm, we took the scenic route through Gregson Park. And were rewarded with cockatoos in the big Afrocarpus tree 🎉
It's a huge tree that has cones like beads, about a centimetre in diameter. Cockatoos love them. Nom nom!

The surf might have been really rough but a bird's gotta eat. This black shag didn't seem to be at all bothered by it, and I saw it swallow at least one catch while I was there.

Walking back from Bibina to a bus stop, we came across this lovely bunch of birds around a storm water channel. Right next to the very busy Hillsborough Road.

Always look in the storm water channels. Two white-faced herons seen in the channels, walking from the train station at Broadmeadow NSW to Kwon Mart (Korean grocer) at New Lambton. A third seen on the playing fields, near some ibis.

From earlier today, 13 magpies pick at a couple of smears of some sort of seeds near Honeysuckle tram stop in Newcastle NSW.
These are but a small fraction of the magpies around this tram stop. All of the surrounding trees bear the sounds of magpies singing. This is the magpie capital.

It rained a little overnight and the grass around here is still wet, so the corellas are getting together on grass verges to have a wee sip and nibble together.

It's good luck when a black (and purple) bird crosses your path, isn't it?
From Monday's walk to the supermarket. This is the third swamp hen to cross my path that morning.
