Yesterday we went to the newly extended Newcastle art gallery. Very nice.
It has a great exhibition of Aboriginal art as the first big room when you walk in, some fantastic stuff there. Some of it brought me to tears, no idea why, but it was high impact.
There was also a ceramic pregnant thumb, an outrageously framed mirror, and one of Brett Whitely's better landscapes. And a grand piano that someone nearly tripped over. And a nice little alcove for Margaret Olley near the entrance.
We mustn't leave it so long to visit again.

Late afternoon sunlight playing off the wave crests coming in to Nobby's Beach.

The tide was coming in at the Cowrie Hole when we were walking past, making lovely patterns.

If any Newcastle NSW locals were thinking about learning ukulele, Mark who co-leads the Ukestra i belong to is running some beginner workshops over the coming weeks. #ukulele #NewcastleNSW #NewcastleAU

After lunch we had a walk around the ocean baths at Newcastle NSW. Here's a bunch of sooty oystercatchers settling in for the night on the rocks just past the baths.
Just after this, with the sun dipping, we saw dolphins working the waters around the baths. At least four, likely five or more. Always a wee thrill!

Boardwalk. (LOUD screechy flying foxes so recommend volume down). #walk #mangroves #CarringtonNSW #NewcastleNSW #NewcastleAU

Among the mangroves, the light patterns are reflective in a meditative, almost hypnotic way.
(Turn sound down because the flying foxes are LOUD). #walk #mangroves #CarringtonNSW #NewcastleNSW #NewcastleAU -
Sunday walk along Throsby Creek at Carrington then out onto the mangrove boardwalk. First proper outside walk since the surgery. #walk #mangroves #NewcastleNSW #NewcastleAU #CarringtonNSW

Here's the Afrocarpus tree in all its glory, decorated with sulphur-crested cockatoos. Underneath, you can see how much debris they drop while eating.
-
Sometimes it's easier to eat from the ground where bits of branches have been dropped.
-
Another shot of cockatoos munching on Afrocarpus cones. You can see that they are messy eaters, quite a lot dropping to the ground below.

Yesterday on our way to "lunch" on Beaumont Street around 4:40pm, we took the scenic route through Gregson Park. And were rewarded with cockatoos in the big Afrocarpus tree 🎉
It's a huge tree that has cones like beads, about a centimetre in diameter. Cockatoos love them. Nom nom!

Very kind of the Queens Wharf Hotel to provide this little perch for welcome swallows.

One of the best things Newcastle Council has done is drain the pond at Foreshore Park.
It was always a nasty mess. No fish, no plants apart from lots of algae and a few weeds. Not pretty in any way.
Once drained, it has become a roller rink for kids of all sizes up to about 90yo to skate, board, scoot, or ride around. Much loved by peeps on wheels. A big thumb's up.
Photo from Saturday, just before 6pm.

The surf might have been really rough but a bird's gotta eat. This black shag didn't seem to be at all bothered by it, and I saw it swallow at least one catch while I was there.
-
A bit rough for a swim? Newcastle Ocean Baths looking more like rough seas this afternoon.
-
I see these guys riding their red postie bikes around Newcastle a bit. Caught them sitting still this afternoon down at Nobby's Head.

Please excuse photographs from the back of a bus, but this is what the north-west corner of Lambton Road and Bridges Road, New Lambton NSW is like in Autumn: parrots. Lots of parrots.
There's a bunch of Afrocarpus trees there, and sulfur-crested cockatoos love munching on their cones. They also like ripping up the grass to get to the tasty bits below.

"Climate Respect" indeed. Nice piece of irony.

Gym this morning done. Coffee now then a swim (doing it this way round to give the sunscreen time to settle beforehand). Have lots of stuff still on my to-do list but this is important too. #ocean #coffee #MerewetherBeach #beach #NewcastleNSW #NewcastleAU

Music from the March for Forests yesterday. They were really good. Bonus points because it's the first time the fiddler played with the guitarist and you would not have guessed at all #MarchForForests #BobBrownFoundation #Environment #NewcastleNSW #NewcastleAU #RisingTide #LockTheGate

Tapatío is a delicious hot sauce made in California, to latinx tastes. I used to be able to pick it up from Coles supermarkets, but they've dropped that line. Boo.
But at least Bibina at Warners Bay still has it, along with a great range of El Yucateco hot sauces, and lots of the La Morena range of products, etc.
While we were there, we picked up some other essentials and some cans for a canned picnic.

Cane toads found in Lake Macquarie and Newcastle. Oh, joy.
"A cane toad has been safely located and removed from a Glendale property following reports made to Lake Macquarie City Council and the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD).
…
It comes days after two cane toads were found in the Waratah area."https://www.lakemac.com.au/News-articles/Cane-toad-hops-into-Glendale-prompting-biosecurity-reminder

Did go for a quick walk in the sand from the flags up to the Granny Pool. Still overcast but a little more green and less grey in the water. #ocean #coffee #BarBeach #beach #NewcastleNSW #NewcastleAU
