  2. Wallsend NSW has a new Asian grocery, a tiny Vietnamese shop. I'm not sure it really provides anything more than the combination of Asia Pacific and S-mart, but it's only new. Will check it occasionally.

  6. Walking yesterday in a stiff breeze under clouds, north from the Newcastle Ocean Baths, we saw quite a few birds. The usual black shag sentinels on lamp posts, of course, but also a couple of shags hunting fish, sooty oystercatchers, pelicans, terns socialising near the surf, and some type of bird of prey – not a sea eagle, smaller than that.

Here are the terrible photos I took with my phone. The bird of prey was being buffeted by the winds and had the sun almost behind it, but if anyone knows what it is from this bad photo, please elucidate.

  7. CW: food, picnic, non-veg

Yesterday it was cold, drizzly, and blowy in Newcastle – which of course meant a picnic in beanies.

After an unsuccessful attempt to buy socks from the army disposals in Boolaroo (NB: "back in 5 minutes" is not what you should put in the window when you're closed), we caught a train and tram to Newcastle Beach.

By then, the drizzle had moved on, and we walked around the seaside and looked at all the birdies. Then settled in for a picnic under the old train sheds, a lovely sheltered spot with good picnic tables.

    Bird photos later.

    All my clouds, gone.

  9. Yesterday in dinner with a show, we packed a picnic and set up at the picnic tables near the Cowrie Hole, Newcastle NSW.

The sea was pretty calm, but there were a few intrepid surfers trying their best to catch a wee wave. Just out past them, dolphins were popping up and down, working the waters for a feed.

Black shags on the lamp posts by the pools, of course, one of which dipped into the surf to go hunting. A pelican or two flew past. Some kind of bird of prey (not an eagle, perhaps a kite?) flew over us, up towards Nobby's Head. One solitary dusky oystercatcher poked about on the rocks.

We saw a couple of bulk carriers exit the port, and the pilot helicopter land on them briefly to retrieve the pilot. An empty bulk carrier headed in, caught by a couple of tugboats.

    A wonderful cloudscape.

  10. Off at the Back to Back at Tocal. A team of people are involved in creating a jumper from scratch - starting with blade shearing a sheep, spinning the fleece, then knitting the wool. #yarn #textiles #NewcastleNSW #NewcastleAU

  11. After buying the essential Asian groceries at Cardiff, we assembled a supermarket picnic, caught the train to Newcastle, and found a picnic table on the side of the Hunter River. A lovely spot to sit and slowly graze into the late afternoon. Photos from near sunset after we had packed up.

  12. CW: Asian grocers, food

Yesterday we caught the bus to the dreaded Charlestown, on a mission. We'd not been to Young Asian grocery since they moved from Jesmond, and also had never been to Parydeise (Persian grocer).

Sorted that now, both are marvellous and Charlestown isn't so bad if we dodge the main debacle as much as possible – e.g. just use the loos and grab a maki roll each on the way to lunch which was Indian at Cooks Hill.

Picked up Miss Completely's favourite snack, fermented bean curd flavoured peanuts. I don't know if anyone else in Newcastle sells them. Very tasty.

Came away from Parydeise with a load of jars, of course, but also split broad beans. I use the little brother, split fava beans, quite a lot in various things, but I don't recall ever seeing these. I asked what they're used for and now know about Dam Pokhtak so that's on a future menu.

Brought to us by the bus numbers 273, 269, 14, and a train home.

  14. The local vigil for the humanitarian activists from the Global Sumud flotilla who, as they tried to bring aid to Gaza, were captured by the IDF while still in international waters and who are being unlawfully detained. 15. Went to Poetry at the Pub last night, mainly to support a friend who was performing as the feature poet (and she was fab).

Figured if i was there anyway, i should read some of my poems in the open sets. So i read 3. Usually hard on myself but i totally kicked arse!

Also signed up to be a member of the poetry group. And had a great time listening to the poetry and meeting people. Awesome night.

  16. Yesterday we went to the newly extended Newcastle art gallery. Very nice.

It has a great exhibition of Aboriginal art as the first big room when you walk in, some fantastic stuff there. Some of it brought me to tears, no idea why, but it was high impact.

There was also a ceramic pregnant thumb, an outrageously framed mirror, and one of Brett Whitely's better landscapes. And a grand piano that someone nearly tripped over. And a nice little alcove for Margaret Olley near the entrance.

We mustn't leave it so long to visit again.

  20. First swim after surgery late on Saturday arvo. Wind was brrr but water was lovely. Not lap swimming myself just moving around in the water. #ocean #swim #MerewetherBaths #NewcastleNSW #NewcastleAU

  21. After lunch we had a walk around the ocean baths at Newcastle NSW. Here's a bunch of sooty oystercatchers settling in for the night on the rocks just past the baths.

Just after this, with the sun dipping, we saw dolphins working the waters around the baths. At least four, likely five or more. Always a wee thrill!
