    ✧ pink cockatoo ✧

The pink cockatoo (Cacatua leadbeateri) is a medium-sized cockatoo that inhabits arid and semi-arid inland areas across Australia, with the exception of the north east. The bird has a soft-textured white and salmon-pink plumage and a large, bright red and yellow crest. The sexes are quite similar although males are usually bigger,...

  6. I received two pleas today for urgent donations: one from #MSF about the plight of the people of Gaza and one from #BirdlifeAustralia about the plight of the endangered South-eastern Hooded Robin.

I can’t afford to give to both so who to choose? A seemingly hopeless cause or one which may be saved. The horror for #Palestinians would normally take precedence. But the population of the hooded robin is down 50% on what it was 10 years ago.

Today, I chose the robin. Maybe Gaza next week. ☹️

  7. Had a nice time sitting on my balcony looking at birds for the #AussieBirdCount Day 1.

Lots of honeyeaters. Then the ravens showed up and chased everyone else away!

  8. My first count is in. I am in Melbourne still and saw mostly common birds in Burnley Park, but did see two pairs of Gang-gang Cockatoos!

From 14-20 October 2024, Australians will head into their backyards for BirdLife Australia’s annual Aussie Bird Count.

Help shine a light on Aussie birds and the Australians who love them.

  9. Baby Butcherbird did a full 20-minute vocal adult workout this afternoon. Up til now, it's been all baby noises but today it was time to grow up.

Note the King Parrot at the end completely ignoring the performance, just getting on with eating.

    Here's just an excerpt.

  10. If you are looking for a pleasant distraction from doomscrolling, the #aussiebirdcount starts today. 20 minutes of birdwatching to help #BirdlifeAustralia survey our beautiful native bird population.

Over 4000 counts already submitted this morning

  11. I’m writing this from the third survey area at Larakoona, surrounded by soldier beetles, as a fox darts from its den under the furthest gum tree. I can hear Rainbow bee-eaters, sacred kingfishers, cockies and a pied butcherbird warbling it’s beautiful song. There’s a cool breeze, which is good as it’s almost 30C, that is keeping the flies at bay. It doesn’t seem to worry the beetles or clouds of butterflies.

  12. If you look closely you can see the tail and head of the mama welcome swallow (hirundo neoxena) nesting about 3m up on the eaves outside our garage.
