  2. CW: AT protocol mention

    The leading candidates so far are Openmeet, Heylo, and Luma. Of these three, only Openmeet is open source, and positioned as an explicit alternative to Openmeet. It is based on the #ATproto, though, not on #ActivityPub.

  6. Another #atproto thread for books: this time about REVIEWS - the hottest topic that everyone clamors about (because everyone got something to say).

    About 70% confident what lands here can be pulled into its own lexicon for other media formats.

Ah, the endless sea of #buzzwords and acronyms in which "distributed #systems engineers" must swim like dazed goldfish. 🐠 Dive deep into the #ATProto rabbit hole, where the #jargon is as thick as molasses and coherence is a distant dream. 😂 Spoiler: it's a miracle anyone ever gets anything done. 🛠️

  23. Just migrated bsky.rss from feedsub to feedsmith, now bsky.rss support RSS, Atom, Jsonfeed, EDF and soon GeoRSS too, I’ll do another round of improvements so that it would be easier to parse and render weather Feeds but that’s for later.

    Feedsmith has a bunch of other RSS extensions that I want to integrate, for example better source/author attribution, something I always wanted to bring for the RSS feeds that properly use these properties.

  25. There is so much happening on the #ATproto Atmosphere that its hard to keep up, I’m not talking about Bluesky the company, I’m talking about this or this or this its really a never-ending exploration no matter where this is going, this being decentralization and building on top of the protocol, it’s good for the web.

  28. (Reading through the explanations on why Echofeed is being shut down, I feel the painful technical part of it more and more and I'm kind of sad there wasn't a chance to provide more help to still sort of keep that running. But I am also left wondering whether this is sort of a watershed moment of learning that this POSSE approach often proposed by the IndieWeb crowd actually just works in a very limited DYIish content for people who are able to handle that on their very own within their very own small scale with handcrafted solutions - which excludes everyone not really able of doing so at all. And it makes me wonder whether, ultimately, the idea proposed by ATProto - keep all your data in one single repository and available, visible to multiple different applications catering to different needs - might generally be smarter than having to copy data all around the 'net dozens and dozens of times.) #digital_technologies #indieweb #atproto #sustainability

  30. I'm implementing OAuth support for ATProto for a project, and wow...

    It's almost like they chose all of the most esoteric RFCs (and still don't have granular scopes). This makes me very much appreciate how comparatively simple Mastodon makes this.

  36. Simple hashtag proposal for dates: datetags for the #indieweb

    In summary by example:
    * #2026_08_04 ISO8601 YYYY_MM_DD date of this post
    * #2026_216 ISO8601 YYYY_DDD ordinal date of this post
    * #2026_08 ISO8601 YYYY_MM month of this post

    Many of us posting on the indieweb often post about things in the past. Photos, events, or sometimes throwback posts. Hashtags communicate and aggregate what posts are about. Posts about the past are usually about a specific date in the past, or sometimes an entire month. Thus it makes sense to use hashtags for those dates and months.

    I have been hashtagging such posts about the past for several years, and with some iteration have developed a convention that works for international readability, and is linked and indexed in #federated #hashtag systems like #ActivityPub (e.g. #Mastodon etc.) and #ATProto (e.g. #Bluesky etc.).

    Examples of posts 10 years ago and this past week that use datetags:
    * https://tantek.com/2016/153/t4/june — monthtag and datetag
    * https://tantek.com/2026/215/t1/watched-odyssey-metreon-70mm-imax — normal and ordinal ISO8601 dates.

    Additional possibilities to explore:
    * yeartags — hashtags for entire years
    * timetags — hashtags for specific times, undated/floating times

    After several web searches I didn’t find any prior proposals for hashtags for dates or times. Hopefully by hashtagging this post, future web searches will find this proposal.

  38. I'm /so close/ to getting HappyView v2.12 out the door. I really want to release it today, but I'm trying to slip one more feature in and I just have too many tests. They take soooooo loooooong to run.

    Maybe I should just delete all the tests. What could possibly go wrong? 🤷🏻‍♂️

  39. I don't know that I'd say I have it covered exactly, but I have a general architectural plan. Games are actually going to be a really hard place to test this work, but I'm gonna do it anyway. 😅

  40. SUPER excited to announce that not only do I get to do a panel at #Fedicon2026 during #FOSSY2026 , but I now get to do my presentation on "The Fediverse Isn't..." !

    I'm seriously SO excited. I hope people push back on my presentation, make points, ask questions. I want everyone walking away looking at the #Fediverse different and that includes me!

    For those interested it'll be 2PM on Friday in the Fedicon room.

    I hope to see you folks there and talk about the future of the open social web!

    TITLE: The Fediverse Isn't...

    ABSTRACT: There is a word we use loosely, sometimes carelessly. We point to servers, apps, instances, logos—and say this is it. But what if all of that is merely the furniture, not the house? What if we're measuring by the wrong units entirely?

    What if the real thing—the actual Fediverse—cannot be found in any repository, cannot be forked from GitHub, cannot be described in a protocol specification?

    It's not Mastodon. Not Pixelfed. Not Lemmy. Not your instance's uptime statistics or the purity of your ActivityPub implementation. These are vessels. Vessels can break, can fork, can fade into obscurity. Yet something persists through them all.

    And here's the uncomfortable part: the walled gardens haven't left yet. They never did. The infrastructure exists for them to step across, to shed their walls, to breathe freely alongside everyone else. Whether they choose to is not a question of compatibility. It's a question of courage.

    We have been building monuments when we should have been tending fires. Protocols don't gather. Servers don't trust each other. Tools don't make friends. People do. Communities do.

    This talk will walk through what we've mistaken the Fediverse for—and more importantly, what remains hidden beneath our assumptions. We'll discuss why platform-building is a dead end, why community-building is the only path forward, and why choosing between ActivityPub and ATProto might be the very wrong battle to fight.

    You came expecting answers. You'll leave with better questions. That's the point.
