  1. A yellow-breasted robin sat still long enough for me to get a photo of it, for a change. On the greenway next to the wetlands at Toronto, NSW.

  2. On my Thursday walk to the shops there were four swamp hens grazing on the greenery near the path. Always a pleasure to see.

  3. After lunch we had a walk around the ocean baths at Newcastle NSW. Here's a bunch of sooty oystercatchers settling in for the night on the rocks just past the baths.

Just after this, with the sun dipping, we saw dolphins working the waters around the baths. At least four, likely five or more. Always a wee thrill!

  4. Here's the Afrocarpus tree in all its glory, decorated with sulphur-crested cockatoos. Underneath, you can see how much debris they drop while eating.

  5. Sometimes it's easier to eat from the ground where bits of branches have been dropped.

  6. Another shot of cockatoos munching on Afrocarpus cones. You can see that they are messy eaters, quite a lot dropping to the ground below.

  7. Yesterday on our way to "lunch" on Beaumont Street around 4:40pm, we took the scenic route through Gregson Park. And were rewarded with cockatoos in the big Afrocarpus tree 🎉

It's a huge tree that has cones like beads, about a centimetre in diameter. Cockatoos love them. Nom nom!

  8. Very kind of the Queens Wharf Hotel to provide this little perch for welcome swallows.

  9. The surf might have been really rough but a bird's gotta eat. This black shag didn't seem to be at all bothered by it, and I saw it swallow at least one catch while I was there.

  10. Please excuse photographs from the back of a bus, but this is what the north-west corner of Lambton Road and Bridges Road, New Lambton NSW is like in Autumn: parrots. Lots of parrots.

There's a bunch of Afrocarpus trees there, and sulfur-crested cockatoos love munching on their cones. They also like ripping up the grass to get to the tasty bits below.

  11. Walking back from Bibina to a bus stop, we came across this lovely bunch of birds around a storm water channel. Right next to the very busy Hillsborough Road.

    "Birds of a feather", etc.

  12. From Thursday's walk to get groceries: a swamp hen posing on an old railway track.

  13. Five Islands Bridge bird report for yesterday:

    Northwards, from the bus:

    • swans swimming in the bay on the lake
    • 2 pelicans loafing on lampposts
    • 1 pelican standing on a lamppost

    Southwards, walking:

    • 1 pelican standing on a lamppost, scratching
    • 1 pelican loafing on a lamppost
    • 1 white-bellied sea eagle circling

  14. Five Islands Bridge bird report:

    · 2 pelicans sitting on the bar of 1 lamppost
    · 1 pelican standing on the lamp of another, scratching
    · 2 black swans in Cockle Creek

  15. Always look in the storm water channels. Two white-faced herons seen in the channels, walking from the train station at Broadmeadow NSW to Kwon Mart (Korean grocer) at New Lambton. A third seen on the playing fields, near some ibis.

  16. Yes it's all going to shit, but please remember to stop and enjoy the flowers sometimes.

  17. From earlier today, 13 magpies pick at a couple of smears of some sort of seeds near Honeysuckle tram stop in Newcastle NSW.

These are but a small fraction of the magpies around this tram stop. All of the surrounding trees bear the sounds of magpies singing. This is the magpie capital.

  18. It rained a little overnight and the grass around here is still wet, so the corellas are getting together on grass verges to have a wee sip and nibble together.

  19. It's good luck when a black (and purple) bird crosses your path, isn't it?

From Monday's walk to the supermarket. This is the third swamp hen to cross my path that morning.

    #LakeMacquarie #BirdsOfOz

  20. When I popped around to the local shops yesterday afternoon, this mob of corellas was waiting patiently for the Mr formerly known as Seed, now dispensing cheap white bread. It still brings all the parrots to the yard; they're like, it's better than nowt.

I love the one that's decided to become the xmas tree fairy.

  21. From Thursday's walk to get groceries, here's a swamp hen and chick grazing the greens along the old Toronto train line.

    #LakeMacquarie #BirdsOfOz

  22. When you run out of food above human height, your only choice is to go for the low hanging fruit.

Corellas picking over what's left on cyprus pines.

  23. On the walk in for groceries this morning, the wood ducks were all close to the road end of Mudd Creek. Mostly sheltering from the hot sun under trees, but a couple taking a wee cruise back up the creek.

    #LakeMacquarie #BirdsOfOz #ducks

  24. Yesterday down at the new apartment buildings along the Hunter River, Newcastle. Corellas just chilling, enjoying the view.

    #NewcastleAU #NewcastleNSW #parrots #birdsofOz

  25. From the walk to the shops this morning, a buff-banded rail. We have a couple of these around but they are buggers. Once spotted, so are you and they run like hell. The best I could do was grainy distant shots through grass.

    #LakeMacquarie #BirdsOfOz

  26. Coming home yesterday, the cypress pines around the corner were again hosting some hungry little corellas.

    #LakeMacquarie #BirdsOfOz #parrots

  27. Some little white corellas bouncing around in wattle trees across the road from the bus stop.

  28. The Southern Emu-Wren made it to the second round of Bird of the Year and so it got my vote again! I was very tempted by the majestic Bin Chicken, though...

  29. Who else is voting in the Aus Bird of the Year Competition? I voted today for the Southern Emu-Wren (and nominated it for the competition!).

    Light sledging most welcome 😂

  30. Always look in the stormwater drains. This great egret (white heron as we call it) stepped out of the drain under the Five Island Bridge to hunt in the water flowing into the lake.

Always look up too, especially at lamp posts next to water. Maybe don't stand under them though.

    #LakeMacquarie #BirdsOfOz #FiveIslandBridge

  31. Ducks aren't the only birds that will mug you at Woy Woy. Back in 2018, this pelican tried the shake down at our picnic table.

Years ago, my father met us at Woy Woy and we got some fish and chips. Sitting by the water, Dad was waving his piece of fish around nonchalantly when a pelican reached over his shoulder and took the fish. Mugged.

    #WoyWoy #BirdsOfOz #pelicans

  32. Lots of shags about, flying back and forth, swimming in chase of little fish. Here's a couple we saw in the "pool" opposite Pelican island.
