I feel like showing off 0x7F ("Seven Foxtrot") again. It's a deck of cards I designed a couple of years ago based on the premise "hey, normally the number cards go up to 10 and then you switch to letters J, Q, K. What if you replaced that with hexadecimal?"

The complete deck actually has 0x80 cards total, not 0x7F, but it makes sense if you imagine counting them all in a zero-indexed system.

these are very satisfying to Zendo with, although it is unfortunate that they're also lightweight and blow away easily. I may have to consider some sort of 3d printed version of these, assuming I can still have the colorblind symbols on 'em.

what are some good games that involve moving a pawn on a board?

a while ago I made these little paper standees of various creatures. I experimented a bunch with different materials and I think I've hit on a pretty good "sweet spot" using thick paper and a plastic stand. my motivation for these was of course to use as board game pawns, in a variety of accessible bright colors and accessible shapes. so now of course I want more excuses to use them!

one idea I've floated is making my own variant of something like the Cosmic Wimpout Scoreboard Bandana. This counts to 1000 in increments of 5, which means it needs to fit 200 notches. I could probably design my own bandana like that? But again, curious what games you'd enjoy playing with it. Cosmic Wimpout is sort of a Farkle variant, maybe I could make my own one of those?

I did it!

I successfully 2d printed a document from my framework laptop running Linux! This is a momentous occasion!

Also I get to sign this doc tonight to formalize our monthly software developer group as a nonprofit. Which is pretty cool too.

I’ve never been president of anything before. I’m going to make people address me as “Mr. President”. I’ll do this with a necessarily haughty kind of arrogance.

Community, DIY, open hardware and software has been part of the commodity #3Dprinting world for over 20 years (#RepRap et al.). Open projects, with parts you can source yourself or via kits (e.g. #Voron).

What if—what IF!
We did the same for plain old #2Dprinting..? I’d build a 2D laser printer from a kit.

(To be fair, I found a few resources and it seems like a daunting talk: lots of moving parts, optics, etc. 3D printers almost feel simpler, they’re just robots that push out hot plastic.)

How come there are no open-source 2D printers?

We have all this open-source hardware—3D printers, soldering irons, single-board computers, and even some phones.

But there’s still no DIY/open-source printer that lets you use any ink without hacks or tricks, one that’s easy to upgrade and expand, without forcing you to buy all kinds of proprietary nonsense. Why?

I wish I had enough knowledge to start such a project. Hopefully, one day I will.
