  1. @peter_mcmahan @bluebells @tante I just checked what OpenAlex knows about me, and apparently I work for the Ministry of National Defense of the People's Republic of China.

I didn't know that. Although, the constant bureaucratic control and surveillance that I'm subject to in #Ecuador feels like the popular conception of China.

  6. @peter_mcmahan If some researchers and evaluators can't be bothered to write the questions, analyze the data, and report findings

    - and all of these are things I've heard researchers publicly crowing in pride about -

then why should people bother responding?

  7. CW: police violence against unhoused people

Montreal police destroying people's shelters just as the weather gets cold. Very on-brand cruelty.

  9. Looking for input from fediverse quant social science researchers:

What are some of your favorite social science articles that use Bayesian linear modeling?

I want to provide my graduate methods students with a list of good examples of how to use Bayesian models for actual research and of how to present the analyses to their audiences.

All of my examples are narrowly within my field.

    What do you got?

  16. Took a trip to the Granby Zoo today, only to realize when we got there that the zoo workers are striking and have been locked out by management since July. Our 6-year-old was (amazingly?) understanding about not crossing the picket line. We ended up having a lovely time at nearby Lac Boivin instead, seeing tons of wildlife among the autumn colors.

  17. It's really hard to take McGill University's austerity talk seriously when they're dumping millions of dollars on union-busting law firms, anti-labor consultancy firms, and private police to intimidate its students.

  18. Collective action gets the goods, yet again.

It seems that the government didn't think Section 107 would hold up in court (at least not with this strike), and the Air Canada employees effectively called their bluff. This is exactly the kind of stand that needs to be taken to keep labor rights from being rolled further and further back.

(Also, I didn't realize just how tightly connected the government is with Air Canada)

  19. Check out my new article on adolescent status at #Socius!
    doi.org/10.1177/23780231241272

Most quantitative research on status assumes that there is a clear prestige ranking within communities. But in reality status relations are usually somewhat ambiguous. I exploit this fact to extract "vertical" and "horizontal" status distinctions among U.S. adolescents and show that the link between race, SES, and status is not as clear as we often assume.
