I have several very big colonies of black garden ant (Lasius niger) in my small garden, where they — much to my dismay — are undermining tiled areas.
Now I am wondering: What are the ants doing during the winter? Do they sleep? Or do they just stay indoors and feast on stored food? Or do most of the worker ants die so that a colony starts almost from scratch come springtime?

Here's the latest example to cross my path: the #FTC has intervened in a lawsuit over generic insulin pricing, on an issue that is incredibly technically specific and also fantastically important:
The underlying case is before the FDA, and it concerns the dirty tricks that pharma giant #Sanofi used to keep #Mylan from making a generic version of Mylan's #Lantus insulin after its patent expired.

_Lasius_ nuptial flight in High Park the other day! The small bright yellow workers solicitously coax the winged reproductives out of the nest so they can take flight, mate, and found nests of their own.
These yellow ants have always creeped me out a bit. Their holes are very large, big enough to put your finger into, but the ants never seem to go in and out; they sit clustered just inside the entrance.
Apparently many _Lasius_ species live entirely underground tending root-feeding aphids and are only seen at the surface for nuptial flights. Maybe that's what I've been seeing—the workers waiting to escort the alates out.
