#WordWeavers: How does your MC respond to danger?
In my upcoming WIP:
Bleu: Freezing, fighting, and once simply Facing it.
Rana: Her nonviolent version of fighting (hey, it’s hard to explain, she’s not human, lol)
Kahali: Freeze & Conscious use of Fawn (also not human)
Commander Savas: Usually he’s all fight, but we get a freeze too
Atsushi: Flee
Digga: Fight like hell, what else would you expect from a cave digger.
Given what they face, I’m with Atsushi.😂😂

#WordWeavers:
Is understanding others easy for your MC?Bleu grasps most people, but doesn’t always “get” when his friends discuss dating because he’s ace and none of his friends are.
Rana can read peoples’ minds, so she gets them, unless they’re human. She doesn’t understand the human penchant for violence.
Commander Savas understands others enough to have mastered manipulating them, and figuring out the best way to do so.

#WordWeavers: Do your characters celebrate any kind of a new year starting or ending?
In my WIP, The Ruined, no. They celebrate what should be the seasons as in equinoxes and solstices, but the humans think of the planet a bit like snowball earth. It’s an ice age, which is different, but despite their value on science, their anger at the ice age blinds them to what’s truly happening on the Surface.

#WordWeavers: How good at saying goodbye is your antagonist?
Hakan has seen too much death of those he loves. He’s a bit numb to loss, though only his best friend (Mican) knows it, because he appears normal to his people.

One of my friends is reading my book and has called twice to complain not about my book, but that the battery on her e-reader has died and she got tossed out of my book world, needing to plug in her device.😂😂😂

#WordWeavers: What part of your antagonist’s personality makes them so antagonistic?
For Commander Savas, it’s his all-encompassing belief that he must save the last of humanity at all costs. Sounds good on the surface, but he’s willing to sacrifice everyone to that goal, and won’t take any risks trusting anyone or anything that could harm humans.
If you’re interested in learning more, The Chasm is currently half-price on Amazon.

…because I felt we all needed new stories where each of us can affect things and make a difference, where society CAN change to overcome violence, & we CAN live in harmony with our planet. It’s multiple POV because the real MC is all of humanity.
To learn more:In a future ice age, Bleu’s expedition team emerges from their subterranean haven to discover humans are no longer the dominant life form on Earth.

I started writing The Calling at the original heyday of dystopian literature (2011), and specifically wrote it to seem in the beginning like a “Dystopian, chosen one” trope that later gets usurped to “Hopepunk, no chosen one, everyone is responsible,” … 1/2

#WordWeavers: Were there any other names you considered for your MC?
Usually, my characters tell me their names. Bleu told me only that he had to be named Blue, but it could be any language. After a lot of research, I went with the French, because it’s close enough to English that hopefully his mother naming him after the sky she’s never seen will be more obvious.

#WordWeavers: SC POV: Who knows your deepest secrets?
Jeb (Human, in his sixties): My deepest secret, my deepest shame, haunts me forever. We do stupid things when young, and I really fucked up. *Voice lowers* Only my dead best friend, and the Ruined that murdered him know what really happened….
All my fault…and I’m worried sick that kid Bleu’s risking a similar mistake.
#FindingHumanityseries a future ice age adventure. -
#WordWeavers: Have your MC choose truth or dare. Tag another player to get their challenge.
Bleu chooses truth, and I tag @paul

Someone just told me a young adult they know who doesn’t like to read picked up my book, The Calling and in a week read both it and its sequel (each over 500 pages). Furthermore, this person said they’d never read a book that affected them like mine. Pinch me, because I must be dreaming.😊

I’ve got so much new character art and I can no longer share it here, thanks to AI scraping. 🥲
Guess you all need to see it at my in-person events. Next one is May 10, New Haven, CT. So many authors are participating, that we’re sharing tables. I’ve got a table 1:30-5:00.

#WritingWonders: What is your MCs first memory?
Marissa has always loved cats and her first memory would definitely be doing something with the family cat.
Caylor’s (ghost) involves realizing quite young that he’s a disappointment to his father.
I have no idea for Dante, my werewolf.
Also, decided to reveal this WIP’s title, so here goes:

@queerscifi I just read an excellent LGBTQA ARC called The Darkest Memories by Alyse Steves. It’s about a superhero serial killer and Hadley, the unlikely heroine who gets wrapped up in the case. Its a great dark, paranormal thriller and I think it’s now o pre-order.

Lost my best friend, Poquito, today. Met him almost a decade ago while volunteering with injured polo ponies. We were instantly inseparable, & I followed him through several owners until I was eventually able to swing making him an official family member. He had a delightful sense of humor, loved playing hide-and-seek, and had a heart of gold. He’ll be sorely missed by everyone who had the joy of knowing him.

Life must be so much easier as a cold, insensitive person who doesn’t care about others. They make more money and have a whole lot less stress. Is this why we enjoy reading books from villains’ points of view? Is it escapism, or something else?

Looking for a gift for the teen in your life? My book The Calling is a bestseller on multiple YA categories. It’s got a diverse mix of 5 POV, a hopeful outlook for humanity, lots of adventure, strong teen girls, no gore, and a sweet romance subplot.
