  1. Decided to get myself the 7800+ after all, as the French original PAL console and the US modded NTSC one I own each have issued I am no longer willing to accept. So will get rid of those, might eventually buy a plain, unmodded NTSC old one again at some point for my GameDrive. But as I own most of the games I want to play on the 7800, I am probably fine with this for quite some time. Really appreciate the attention to detail they spent here. Now can they please release a Jaguar+? Not that I need one, but it would be awesome. Anyway. Off to play some Ninja Golf. Cheers!

  2. "If you wanted to create a floppy disk from scratch, you'd first have to create the universe." Well, Carl Sagan said that about apple pie, but it basically holds true no matter what you want to create from scratch. Turns out trying to create new floppy disks is also not a small endeavor. This is the second person seriously trying afaik so far, and he's coming pretty close already. I especially like the chapter called "chasing microns". This is really something special, so go watch it 📺💾

  3. Michael Chrichton not only wrote about Dinosaurs, Tornados or Robot theme parks. He also wrote about computers conquering our homes, and this is not a fictionary book. I last read it around 2004 for my broader research on the computing history for my first book about Commodore. Time to give it another go more than 20 years later. He wrote this one in 1983, the German translation is from the year after. He was seemingly a big fan of Apple and the IBM PC and was not too happy about Commodore, as far as I remember. Time to dive back in!

  8. I waited for around two years for this to get cheaper - well, "cheaper" as in still too expensive, but a range I was willing to accept. And here we are now: This framed game was given to High Voltage for the release day of "White Men Can't Jump" on the Jaguar by Atari. The seller had one for another game from High Voltage, but that went in an instant. Don't remember what that was, but this here is so obscure that noone wanted it badly enough, except for me maybe. Oh well. A nice collection piece and another small piece of Jaguar's history. Cheers everyone!

  9. Oh wow. Earlier today I saw that Choplifter in its rare Atari XEGS box went up on ebay. Sealed. It's the one blue-line XE game next to Summer Games that I want in box, as I only have the carts of both. So I placed my bet. Didn't look on my phone all the time and just discovered that the seller cancelled the auction and put the game up for a fixed price of 450 US$, for which it sold in a heartbeat. Didn't see that, but I might not have bought it for that price. Oh well. And so the search continues, but I'm in no hurry.

  10. John Carmack (Doom, Quake, that virtual reality headset - you know the man) talks about AI, AGI and why training with classical Atari 2600 games is a great way for the ghost in the machine to learn. I did not expect this and thought that AI playing Atari was "done" (i.e.: solved, no need to look into that further) some years ago actually. But as it turns out: There is still more to it. Listen to his talk here, well worth your time if you are fascinated by AI and have a passion for Atari and vintage gaming in general.

  15. That's the earliest C64 game I remember from my childhood: Quinx. You play as someone in one strange fever dream, as he is being trapped on top of a huge piece of paper, little ink worms appear and want to eat it, so he has to squash them, use Tippex to erase their traces and every now and a again, a dentist appears and drags him to brush his teeth because he ate too many sweets and fruits ... I mean ... right? It has elements of a somewhat reversed Volfied, but it's a rather unique concept still. The group TREX (full disclosure: I am a member) offers a great jewel crack of this one. Worth checking out. Try it and let me know what you think 😎🕹️

  19. Atari Jaguar news: This year, there is another JagJam and I'm hoping to see some great, creative new titles for the Jaguar again. The deadline for submissions is October, 31st, which gives devs half a year to make something. So if you are looking for a programming challenge or want to support the jam by spreading the word, please feel free to do so! Cheers!

  24. Just because it was so very cheap, I got myself a V-Tech IQ TV512 learning computer. It's not good, which was to be expected, but it's not horrible. Actually, the previous owner used it for some texts about astronomy and letters to friends. As it can print, that makes totally sense. I even got the inkjet printer that V-Tech sold for these in box, which seems to be pretty rare, but I could not be bothered to even turn that on once. Ink is most probably dry and the printer weighs less than a letter (might be a bit exaggerated, but still). So now that I have this neat but pretty bulky machine, what should I do with it? Maybe just sell it before I put it in the basement and forget about its existence entirely? 😅 Can't see myself using it, don't want to store it up in my flat. Why the heck did I even get it? Curiosity, be damned! 🙈

  27. Some of my Atari 7800 games. Crystal Quest is really nice and I have to say I'm pretty excited to get Tiger Heli when it'll be released this summer. Heck, I might even consider buying a 7800+ and use it with my trusty (cheap) HDMI2AV converter on a CRT.
