As expected (given it was just a reorganization of Rev. 0), the new #Famiclone Dendy CPU clock multiplier works.
For people who just tuned in, this is a 1.25x clock multiplier that allows you to use some (most?) Dendy CPUs used in famiclones in your NTSC NES/Famicom/whatever.
You can solder this under your motherboard or between two sockets.
Dendy CPUs are much much cheaper than the proper NTSC variants.

Well, I am surprised. It works!
I am using a "Dendy" #famiclone CPU (TA-03NP1) in an NTSC Famicom, and it seems to work fine!
All I had to do was multiplying the clock for the CPU by 5/4 using this small patch-pcb on the bottom of the CPU, remove a cap and run a small wire. -

It's mostly SMD, but also decently easy to handsolder.
The version in the repo does not require bodges, but be aware that I'm also working on a smaller revision that uses 0805 components and does away with all the useless stuff that I thought I would use for debugging (but did not actually use).

Giusto per #trivia, il mio #famiclone è questo, comunque: https://it.aliexpress.com/item/1005005829526748.html… in pratica una cover per #smartphone, #quirky ikr? Lo comprai quando usavo ancora il Huawei come #telefono giornaliero, dopo aver bene scommesso che il modello della #cover per iPhone 7 sarebbe calzato decentemente. L’#hardware che ha dentro sembra essere tutto sommato più vicino a quello di altre #console tipo quel mini arcade dell’altro giorno, che a robe come il #Sup (c’è in comune la memoria più piccola, la mancanza di AV out e del tasto Select, e il fatto che il volume sia regolabile a schifo con soli 3 livelli anziché con una rotellina). Non mi sembra di aver trovato altri #teardown di #famicloni così (devo cercare meglio anche per modelli simili), ma il mini arcade come quello #smontato da #EEVBlog ha una #memoria #Winbond: https://www.eevblog.com/2019/06/28/mini-arcade-game-console-repair-oopsie/. 🧭️
Certe immagini sulle inserzioni cinesi fanno morire…Stamattina, con un po’ di #sofferenza, ho provato a #saldare dei fili sugli 8 #piedini del mio piccolissimo chip #flash, e ce l’ho addirittura fatta (contro le mie aspettative). Fatto questo, non avendo #informazioni precise, ho quindi varie strade da poter percorrere, e per adesso ho provato quella dell’interfaccia #SDcard (anche perché il fatto dell’ESP di ieri mi rallenterebbe sulle altre vie), ossia: se, puta caso, sto coso dovesse funzionare come altre memorie #flash #SPI, allora dovrebbe poter essere riconosciuto da lettori di #schede. Allora, non senza difficoltà, sacrifico un #adattatore SD-microSD per attaccare dei #fili pure a quello, in modo da poterlo collegare da un lato al PC e dall’altro al #chip. 🕷️
Se non si capisce nulla, è normale.Ed è proprio qui che per ora temo di dovermi fermare… purtroppo, questa strategia non è sembrata funzionare. Ho controllato varie volte che i #collegamenti funzionassero elettricamente, e che io stessi collegando tutto per bene secondo il #pinout dello standard #SD e le mie supposizioni sul possibile pinout del chip innominato, ma, quando il collegamento del lettore via USB rimaneva stabile, comunque Linux non riusciva ad accedere all’unità, facendo tirare sia a cat che dd un errore “medium not found” (praticamente come quando si collega il lettore senza niente dentro). Quindi non so. A questo punto potrebbe essere possibilmente proficuo fare #debugging tramite #GPIO per vedere cosa si riesce a cavare da questa storia… se mi verrà voglia lo farò, non so quando. 😴️

Out of all the #Famicom clone consoles out there, this is the only one I'd love to actually own and take a closer look at: The Zenon 2, allegedly made in South Korea and perhaps from the early 2000s.
The #Atari conaisseurs among you will notice a certain relationship to the Jaguar - but the molds never left the US, where all cases were made, and so it would be nice to see how close they got to the real Jaguar with their guesswork for the case here. Unfortunately, they seem to be incredibly rare - so much so that this is the only photo that I could find of this variation (there seems to be a blue one that also seems to be a bit more crude in design than this). So in case you own one and want to sell it, or would at least feel comfortable taking some good quality pics of it, or you live or know anyone living in South Korea who might be able to help trace this console down, feel free to share, comment or link someone here.
I'd be very happy to someday get this and maybe add a little footnote in my book "Clipped Claws" about this very strange thing. I mean who'd come up with the idea to make a Famiclone 8bit clone console look like a failed Atari console basically nobody knew about in the target area? Just used the side cutter to cut the sides off. Soldered it to the board and that's it. Tested it and it woerks! Another #famiclone saved. Maybe my friend will want it back now. God knows I wont't be playing on it. I am curious about the AV Out composite quality though.

La cosa che volevo #provare ieri in ogni caso era la seguente: #hackerare un #famiclone di quelli con solo #giochi integrati. Io ho un #vecchio famiclone #portatile, mezzo #scassato (lo speaker chissà dove è finito, la scocca è distrutta, e la batteria fu infine cannibalizzata per altri scopi dopo tutto questo casino), ma altrimenti funzionante e #tecnicamente utile. Un po’ per lo #sfizio, un po’ per potenziali piani futuri, avrei interesse a poter #moddare il #firmware, cambiando i giochi che contiene… 😈
In realtà, l’#idea l’avrei avuta già tanti anni fa, ma all’epoca non avevo saputo trovare moltissimo sul #web, e personalmente non sapevo minimamente dove provare a mettere le mani io direttamente. Negli ultimi giorni, però, mi è capitato di cercare e #trovare delle #informazioni in più sull’argomento, e scoprire addirittura che qualcuno in effetti è riuscito a #dumpare la memoria #flash di una #console Sup, #modificare le #ROM contenute, e praticamente riflashare il firmware così modificato sul dispositivo. Quel qualcuno a quanto ho visto ha avuto fortuna però, perché il suo famiclone ha una #memoria non solo #marchiata (a differenza della mia, che riporta solo un codice e il nome di Taiwan, sul web non si trova niente), ma addirittura collegata tramite una #PCB intermedia che ha dei comodi punti di #saldatura (la mia è direttamente sulla scheda madre, ringraziando il cielo però è a #piedini). Insomma, non posso seguire la sua strada direttamente, ma mi servono #idee alternative. 🎭
Dirò più tardi qual è più precisamente la mia situazione e cosa ho fatto, ma ve lo dico, non aspettatevi chissà che… non ho ottenuto quello che volevo. 🥴

Hace unas semanas, mi madre iba a tirar la famiclone con la que crecí, pero le dije que noooo, que era parte de mi infancia. Así que me la dio, en caja casi completa y todo. Hoy la he sacado para desmontarla.
Es una famiclone de las primeras, estaba en mi casa antes de que yo naciera, así que tendrá unos 35 años. Puede que se hubiese comprado entre el 86 y el 88 (yo soy del 89). En esa época la NES estaba completamente en venta, así que no hay duda de que esta es una NES bootleg de cabo a rabo.
Que yo sepa aún funciona, pero tendré que buscar un alimentador. Debajo dice que gasta 4W pero no pone el voltaje.
Aunque la caja ponga lo contrario, nunca se ha usado el slot de cartuchos porque los 120 y algo juegos los lleva internamente. Nunca trajo cartucho.
Se usó frecuentemente hasta probablemente 1999, cuando me regalaron la GBC para Reyes.
Curioso que los chips sean de Goldstar y las CPUs sean clones del 6502 y el 6507, concretamente UMC UA6538 y UMC UA6527P.
Si encuentro un alimentador la enchufaré. Por suerte no tiene ningún condensador jodido.
EDIT: Según la placa base, está fabricada en abril de 1992. Puede que mi memoria falle un poco, entonces.
EDIT 2: Con el alimentador de la Megadrive y un cable RCA que tenía por ahí tirao he conseguido que funcione. Eso sí, los colores de puta pena. En fin, es lo que hay.

Io ho un #vecchio famiclone #portatile, mezzo #scassato (lo speaker chissà dove è finito, la scocca è distrutta, e la batteria fu infine cannibalizzata per altri scopi dopo tutto questo casino), ma altrimenti funzionante e #tecnicamente utile. Un po’ per lo #sfizio, un po’ per potenziali piani futuri, avrei interesse a poter #moddare il #firmware, cambiando i giochi che contiene… 😈

Quel qualcuno a quanto ho visto ha avuto fortuna però, perché il suo famiclone ha una #memoria non solo #marchiata (a differenza della mia, che riporta solo un codice e il nome di Taiwan, sul web non si trova niente), ma addirittura collegata tramite una #PCB intermedia che ha dei comodi punti di #saldatura (la mia è direttamente sulla scheda madre, ringraziando il cielo però è a #piedini). Insomma, non posso seguire la sua strada direttamente, ma mi servono #idee alternative. 🎭
Dirò più tardi qual è più precisamente la mia situazione e cosa ho fatto, ma ve lo dico, non aspettatevi chissà che… non ho ottenuto quello che volevo. 🥴

Giusto per #trivia, il mio #famiclone è questo, comunque: https://it.aliexpress.com/item/1005005829526748.html… in pratica una cover per #smartphone, #quirky ikr? Lo comprai quando usavo ancora il Huawei come #telefono giornaliero, dopo aver bene scommesso che il modello della #cover per iPhone 7 sarebbe calzato decentemente. L’#hardware che ha dentro sembra essere tutto sommato più vicino a quello di altre #console tipo quel mini arcade dell’altro giorno, che a robe come il #Sup (c’è in comune la memoria più piccola, la mancanza di AV out e del tasto Select, e il fatto che il volume sia regolabile a schifo con soli 3 livelli anziché con una rotellina). Non mi sembra di aver trovato altri #teardown di #famicloni così (devo cercare meglio anche per modelli simili), ma il mini arcade come quello #smontato da #EEVBlog ha una #memoria #Winbond: https://www.eevblog.com/2019/06/28/mini-arcade-game-console-repair-oopsie/. 🧭️
Certe immagini sulle inserzioni cinesi fanno morire…Stamattina, con un po’ di #sofferenza, ho provato a #saldare dei fili sugli 8 #piedini del mio piccolissimo chip #flash, e ce l’ho addirittura fatta (contro le mie aspettative). Fatto questo, non avendo #informazioni precise, ho quindi varie strade da poter percorrere, e per adesso ho provato quella dell’interfaccia #SDcard (anche perché il fatto dell’ESP di ieri mi rallenterebbe sulle altre vie), ossia: se, puta caso, sto coso dovesse funzionare come altre memorie #flash #SPI, allora dovrebbe poter essere riconosciuto da lettori di #schede. Allora, non senza difficoltà, sacrifico un #adattatore SD-microSD per attaccare dei #fili pure a quello, in modo da poterlo collegare da un lato al PC e dall’altro al #chip. 🕷️
Se non si capisce nulla, è normale.Ed è proprio qui che per ora temo di dovermi fermare… purtroppo, questa strategia non è sembrata funzionare. Ho controllato varie volte che i #collegamenti funzionassero elettricamente, e che io stessi collegando tutto per bene secondo il #pinout dello standard #SD e le mie supposizioni sul possibile pinout del chip innominato, ma, quando il collegamento del lettore via USB rimaneva stabile, comunque Linux non riusciva ad accedere all’unità, facendo tirare sia a cat che dd un errore “medium not found” (praticamente come quando si collega il lettore senza niente dentro). Quindi non so. A questo punto potrebbe essere possibilmente proficuo fare #debugging tramite #GPIO per vedere cosa si riesce a cavare da questa storia… se mi verrà voglia lo farò, non so quando. 😴️

Out of all the #Famicom clone consoles out there, this is the only one I'd love to actually own and take a closer look at: The Zenon 2, allegedly made in South Korea and perhaps from the early 2000s.
The #Atari conaisseurs among you will notice a certain relationship to the Jaguar - but the molds never left the US, where all cases were made, and so it would be nice to see how close they got to the real Jaguar with their guesswork for the case here. Unfortunately, they seem to be incredibly rare - so much so that this is the only photo that I could find of this variation (there seems to be a blue one that also seems to be a bit more crude in design than this). So in case you own one and want to sell it, or would at least feel comfortable taking some good quality pics of it, or you live or know anyone living in South Korea who might be able to help trace this console down, feel free to share, comment or link someone here.
