I wanted to have Wi-Fi on my off-grid allotment, so I made my LTE modem run on battery power. In the post I describe the build process and the list of needed parts. It's a fun and simple project for everyone with a similar need :)

I saw some beautiful work from @remiboucher at the recent #ALAN2023 conference showing how greenhouses can be brighter than an entire city when seen from space. Fortunately, Remi also showed ways this can be improved with great results. 🙂

@stfn @AenBleidd A few weeks ago my last client died (Raspberry Pi 4), because the sd card broke (this time it was an expensive one) and I think it's pretty common sd card break if you run #boinc 24/7.
I had #gridcoin on this client, too. It is a crypto currency, which rewards people who are crunching boinc, instead of doing useless hash calculations like #bitcoin
But because I see it as a waste of resources, I will not revive this project yet.
I might do it if I will find the time and if the community will support it, too, with the exception that I will buy only used hardware, because buying new hardware (even the solar panels and battery) for this project isn't sustainable at all.
Imagine a fleet of used mini computers / old hardware crunching for science with alternative energy. 😮

@stfn I've contributed off and on to #boinc #foldingathome and other #distributedcomputing projects for many years but now don't want to run up my electric bill or warm the planet for them.
Are there any data showing energy efficiency of distributed computing options? I can run Folding@Home on just my high efficiency cores 24/7 with #AppTamer but I've no idea if that is "green" compared to a server. BOINC uses high power/low efficiency cores so I uninstalled it. -

Niedawno @stfn zainspirował był mnie, bym zaglądał na dworce kolejowe miast, które odwiedzam, w poszukiwaniu ciekawej architektury i wnętrz.
Fakt, w niejednej poczekalni czy holu dworca ujrzałem coś ciekawego. Jednak obok doznań optycznych, można też trafić na trudne do zapomnienia doznania węchowe.
Toteż dworca w Sochaczewie polecać nie będę.

It is getting more difficult to recognize what some of these single-use #vape devices are. I nearly walked right by this one which was disguised as an opened drinks can with a plastic straw sticking out.The 650mAh lithium battery is rechargeable via the USB-C port on the bottom but there is no way to easily refill the atomizer tank
