Manor Fields Park clean up after the fire.
Yesterday I went to help at the clean-up at Manor Fields Park following the fire on August 13th. It’s one of my favourite local spots for a walk, looking out for herons, other birds and waterfowl, butterflies, insects and wildflowers. So it was depressing to see nearly half the park completely scorched black, trees burnt dead, and just a few brave, resilient plants left standing. But it was uplifting to join with about one hundred volunteers, organised by Green Estate, to help start to put things right. On the ground were incinerated blackberries and calcified snail shells, sometimes indistinguishable from white plastic bottle tops. Litter that was previously covered in vegetation was now easy to find, including tyres, car parts, bottles and cans, crisp packets, and unidentifiable miscellaneous bits. So we set forth with litter pickers, and after just an hour, the lorry was jammed full of rubbish. Many thanks to everyone who turned out to help and to the organisers from Green Estate.
So what caused the fire? Apparently, there is no evidence that it was arson, although not far away, I am aware of many deliberate attempts to burn Skye Edge, endangering nearby houses and allotments, and of course, our fantastic fire service. So maybe the fire was caused by a discarded bottle, the sun’s rays being magnified to create enough heat to ignite the grass. But what is certain is that our extremely hot, dry summer made the conditions ideal for the fire to spread quickly, posing a very difficult challenge for the fire service. Throughout the world, wildfires are happening more frequently as the planet continues to heat up as a direct result of our carbon emissions.
As I write, the rain is hammering on my bay window. When it rained for the first time in many weeks, I was very happy- it reminded me of my time in Uganda, when our water tank ran dry in the drought. When it eventually rained, we put every container outside to collect as much water as we possibly could! Maybe this is the end of our hot summer, but perhaps the hot conditions will return. Next year is already forecast to be an even hotter summer, due to the record-breaking El Niño. So we need to be prepared for these extreme conditions.
Graham is retrieving litter from the scorched earth. To stop fires, we need to report people behaving in a way that might start one. Whether it’s fireworks, barbeques, carelessly discarding a cigarette, or simply playing with matches, this behaviour in hot, dry conditions puts lives at risk and must be stopped. You can ring Firestoppers anonymously on 0800 1695558. Add this number to your contacts so you have it when you need it.
Your local park or green space may have a Friends of group. Get in touch with them and help with litter picks and improving the park. Friends of Manor Fields Park is here. Picking up one glass bottle may prevent the disaster Manor Fields just suffered.
I’ve heard some blame rewilding for the fires, but aerial photographs show that areas that have been rewilded, letting streams take their natural course, have remained green throughout the drought, whereas fields of short grass, such as at Arbourthorne Park, have caught fire. Read more about this here.
The fire service has done a magnificent job this summer, but they were not able to stop houses from being ruined at Foxhill. As the planet heats up, the fire service needs more personnel and better resources. They can’t be everywhere at once, and at some points this summer, fires were blazing all over the city. So the Government must fund them properly, put a stop to any idea of more drilling for more oil and gas, and tackle the climate emergency by putting the country on a war footing to reduce our carbon emissions.

Morning walk. I suspect they suspect I might be getting balls out )not a chance in the long grasses). After a wet night (almost 3cm of rain), a dry morning — except for the grass of course.
The other two's owner has just had her hip done, so fingers crossed in a month or two's time, Chai and I will be starting the day with a run and they will be getting their morning walk from her.

Not attempted. Lots of litter around the GZ, didn’t feel like walking, let alone poking, through it. 😢

Saw this little guy today (okay, not so little) and took a bit to realize it had a huge tackle in its beak! I got closer to see if it was hooked / tangled or just very partial to this fish-shaped piece of trash. It didn’t seem to be in distress and flew off before I could verify.
Not sure if there’s a rule about leaving cut lines in the water, but there ought to be! I’m tired of seeing dead seagulls in the neighborhood 😔 #boston #birds #litter

If you litter in the UK you face a £150 fixed penalty fine. Maybe have proportional fines for billionaires who litter in space?

Ah, litter picking, the great sense of enormous wellbeing and rage combined. I, and you too, shouldn't be the ones going around clearing up after others. Even if it does feel and look good after you cleared an area of litter.
It really saddened me, and pisses me off, that there's so much insolent, I don't care, what is it to you, not my problem of dumping of litter. I've seen people right next to me open up a car door, dump out the packaging of junk food and then drive off while looking right at me, with a bin about 10m or less away.
Was the reason why you went out into the public, where you can enjoy the great beautiful outdoors and nature while having a picnic, because the local tip (garage dump) was closed? That the only reason I can see why you left it looking like a tip, clearly not because you want the nature and your future to still be a stunning place for yourself and others to enjoy for years to come.
Sigh.

What To Watch On YouTube Right Now – Part 146
Welcome back my readers, YouTube viewers and all others who followed this series of articles focused on YouTube videos worth watching.
Have you been searching for something fun or interesting to watch on YouTube? Do you feel bored right now and you crave for something to see on the world’s most popular online video destination?
I recommend you check out the following videos I found.
#1 Varied Scary Movie 3 Reaction Videos – After enjoying Scary Movie (2000), I eventually saw Scary Movie 2 in a California cinema and it was disappointing due to its rushed and uninspired presentation. More than two years later, I saw Scary Movie 3 in a packed cinema here in the Philippines. Directed by David Zucker – part of the famous Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker (ZAZ) – Scary Movie 3 does not quite match the fun and quality of the original film of 2000 but it was still a huge improvement over Scary Movie 2. Not only that, the 2003 film had Anna Faris back as Cindy Campbell while the legendary comedian Leslie Nielsen was a notable addition. To see how much of an impact Scary Movie 3 has with YouTubers, watch and selected video reactions below.

#2 A Korean Comic Café – If you are visiting South Korea and if you want to spend time in a place that allows privacy, access to digital entertainment, comic books and a variety of food and drinks during the day, try visiting a comic café. Watch and learn from the video below.

#3 Ranting For Vengeance Looks At Great Comics That Actually Suck – What do you think makes a comic book great? Could it be because of the creators’ work, the storytelling style, real-world events that inspired the creative process, or the reputation of the creators who made it? In his video from 2025, Ranting for Vengeance examines that comics that were perceived to be great but sucked. Watch his video and pay close attention to the details and his explanations.

#4 Ashleigh Burton Reacts To Weird Science – If you have read comic books of Weird Science, could you see their connection with the 1985 science fiction teen comedy film Weird Science? Directed by the late John Hughes, Weird Science follows two nerdy social outcast high school students who have had enough of being humiliated by others and enduring disappointing lives. Together, the two plan to make the perfect dream woman come true using a computer while hacking a government computer system. As it is loosely based on the Weird Science series of EC Comics, the film was a notable product of its time and it remains a memorable part of 1980s Hollywood cinema. To see if it has any entertainment impact, watch Ashleigh Burton’s reaction video now.

#5 Sega’s F355 Challenge Revisited – During a visit to Gameworx inside Festival Mall in 1999, I saw the arcade game F355 Challenge from Sega. After marveling at its graphics during the first several minutes, I bought arcade tokens to play it. To my surprise, F355 Challenge was a racing simulation as it was designed with in-depth driving realism in mind. Yu Suzuki (Virtua Fighter) was the man who produced and directed the game, and in my opinion F355 Challenge has to be played in its original arcade form while the Sega Dreamcast port is the alternative. To see what F355 Challenge has to offer gamers, watch the video below.

#6 Penalties On Littering At Shibuya – Shibuya is one of the most lively urban spots in Japan. Located in Tokyo, is a special ward where visitors can enjoy the immense commercial joints and it is now the premiere hub for youth culture. Sadly, as Japan is attracting tens of millions of foreign tourists each year, littering at Shibuya has gone up tremendously. Fortunately, the local authorities are taking action again littering and those who littered will be penalized when they are caught. Learn from the Nippon TV video below.

#7 GoodBadFlicks Reviews The Bees – Way back in the late-1980s, the 1978 horror movie The Bees was shown on local TV and it drew a large audience. I cannot forget the time when a classmate of mine got so scared watching it. The Bees is a Mexican production that had the late John Saxon in a major role. To see the quality and production details of The Bees, watch the video of GoodBadFlicks below.

Very thoughtful of some zillionaire tech bros to provide these convenient self-installing relocatable sidewalk trash receptacles! All of a sudden they're everywhere and we are using them! The grateful people of Los Angeles thank and salute our benefactors!

Just learned of another vlogger who shows cleaning up public places (this time in LA).
The common thread is that people are paying salaries and taxes to governments that are failing them. Those governments are giving tax breaks to the rich and favoring the priorities of the rich while more & more people go homeless, while there are fewer public amenities (like public bathrooms) and those amenities that are already constructed are either underserved or closed "for COVID" or "due to terrorist risk" (both excuses I've seen).

Well the run didn't remove the depression and sadness of how dirty the yUK has become. People really don't care anymore do they. I tried for most of this week to ignore it, but what I saw last night, just tipped me over.
Going out on a run on the mainland, I would sometimes come back with a bit of litter, a wrapper of some sort and now and again a drink bottle/can. Everything could easily fit in a dog poop bag and a side pocket of my running vest. We rarely had to do any litter picking when parked up for a night and if we did it would be a small amount.
Since arriving into the yUK every time we parked up, we litter picked and witnessed overflowing bins. Last night at a location where people clearly come for hikes or to sit and enjoy their chippy tea. I've just done a litter pick and put a bag full into the provided bin.
A young couple had their take away in their car, open the door and dumped their litter, under 10m away from the bin. And they drove off, I jumped out of HQ and made a clear show of what I was doing but they were not looking as they speed away. A bit later on the last bio break for the mutts for the night, I picked up 4 1L bottles someone else had just dumped.
On today's run I could have filled two 30+ liters bin bags with the amount of litter laying about, heck even broken car parts, just why!?!
Fecking depressing, I'm not saying that the mainland is spotless, they got their dirty spots too and fly tipping, but at least it doesn't feel like you are running through a garbage dump when out and about.

It’s about time these compactors have come to the north side. Everyone is fed up with having to walk over plastic bags in the city centre, or seeing seagulls and pests tearing them apart to get food and pulling the rush out all over the place.
It comes up so often on the doors so I’m happy to say we finally have the solution in place.

#Wss366 litterSoon after, the last of the light disappeared, leaving the cell in darkness. Mao lay down to sleep, only to toss and turn with fever.
“I hear something,” Chue said after a while, and Mao roused herself with difficulty.
Chue moved to where she could ambush anyone entering the room, and Mao readied the blanket.
When the door opened, the two brothers stepped in, one carrying a torch. Chue had her cord around Cudgel’s neck before he knew what was happening. Mao was slower. She stumbled toward the second man and missed his head with the blanket. Instead, the torchlight vanished as the blanket enveloped it.
Mao’s opponent swung blindly, landing a glancing blow to her shoulder. Mao spun, fell, and dropped the blanket on the floor, where it lay smoking amid a #litter of dishes.
With one savage kick at Mao, her opponent turned to help his brother, who was desperately pulling at the tightly wound cord around his neck.
Mao grabbed at her attacker’s ankles only to be kicked aside again. She landed, face pressed against the blanket. She coughed, inhaling the smoke from the smoldering wool. The embers burned her cheek. Half-rising, she grabbed the torch and swung at her opponent.
The embers flared as they whistled through the air, and flames licked up through holes in the cloth.
The blow landed just below the man’s knee, and he staggered.
“Jese, bitch,” the man swore, kicking at her once more.
Behind him, his brother slumped soundlessly to the floor. Chue scooped up his cudgel. There was a sharp crack, and the second man toppled, joining his brother on the ground.
“Chue thinks we should go before someone else comes,” and with those words, she helped Mao to her feet.
Mao staggered, then reluctantly allowed Chue to help her move out into the hall.
