  11. PyPI Packages Deliver ZiChatBot Malware via Zulip APIs

Malicious Python packages on PyPI were found to be secretly delivering a new malware called ZiChatBot, which uses Zulip APIs to receive instructions. These seemingly harmless packages covertly dropped malicious components, highlighting the importance of vigilance when downloading code from public repositories.

I don't get why #Zulip is not used more often in "forums", for support work and for general community building. IMO, it's got modern UI and it's purpose-built to organize communities and help with asynchronous communication that can be searched later. Plus, it's entirely free and open source software and there are both self hosting and paid hosting options.

No other solution I know comes close, especially not the ones that focus on #VoiceChat or try to mimic #Discord, e.g. #Revolt.

  14. Is Lemmy "competitive" with Discourse/Zulip in features? I would love to participate in various forums (Haiku OS, for sure; others too, like Pony which is on Zulip), but am loath to create log-ins on each. Is the Discourse way of not going for federation important for discussion forums?

  16. I'm running an inadvertent comparison of Zulip, Slack, and Discord tonight. I asked the same question (copy & pasted) about rust-analyzer, Neovim, and #[cfg(feature = "ssr”)] attributes.

I'm curious to see which gets a response first, and which response is the most helpful.

  18. I'm still surprised by how much snappier my self hosted #forgejo (v15) instance is compared to that well known, exponentionally growing site (that has had lots of downtime lately). And it just works (tm)!

Now onto the next project; getting a personal #Zulip instance up and running. While I honestly think #Mattermost is the better built product, and having lots of home made plugins from when we used it at work, I'm not going to compile my own Android app just to get notifications working.

  23. RE: https://mastodon.social/@Pikapods/116583739228127857

Open-source Slack alternative Zulip is officially moving to an independent nonprofit foundation structure.

Following the path of organizations like Mozilla and Signal, this move ensures the project remains community-driven and free from venture capital pressure. It's a massive milestone for sustainable open-source software and a great sign for the future of decentralized team communication.

I wish them well, but dang, mentioning #Mozilla is a bit of a jump-scare. 🤣
