Right now at #RSECon23 a panel on RSEs in academic vs. RSEs in industry. Inevitably there's a lot of discussion on pay and benefits (which I find a bit depressingly reductive), but also useful visibility of the variety of #RSE roles that exist.

It's the last day of #RSECon23. Attended a fantastic session on #ReFrame for automated task running on #HPC yesterday (designed for tests but in this case benchmarks). It was fully hands-on using #Archer2, which really removed the mystery in a good way. This alone would have been worth attending for.

At #RSECon23, Neil P Chue Hong tried to define the role of the "Research Software Engineer"

The importance here is to shape the value system so that software engineers do not vanish from the academic world.

I commend the effort to build stories away from h-index

I'm meeting some of the wider Research Software Engineering (#RSEng) community at #RSECon23 and am really struck by how many RSEs have backgrounds in #astronomy/#astrophysics research.

Observation from #RSECon23.

In the #RSE plenaries scanning the room I saw many Macs. In the #HPC session the balance shifts to Windows & Linux (Dell, Framework, HP).

Maybe that's my restricted view/bias, but if true, I wonder why?

A new #RSECon23 day, this morning it's all about #HPC at the HPC Community Birds of a Feather sessions. The main topics are UK Exascale, benchmarking, training and future technologies. Exascale focus in the UK is on traditional modeling and simulation, and AI/Deep Learning; for the scientific community and industry. Frontier in the US, Lumi in Finland and Leonardo in Italy are current state of the art equivalents.

Adrian Bajraktari at #RSECon23: amongst university research software engineers lack of time, skills, resources and systematic onboarding were cited as reasons not to adopt better software engineering practices. Plus unclear benefits and priority of research results over code quality. The consequence is people-software coupling. Fascinating talk.

Domhnall Carlin at #RSECon23: funded software outputs drop dramatically after Covid (more so than for papers). Why is this?

Domhnall Carlin at #RSECon23 is analysing analysing software in UK institutional repos (usually for papers). Software is exempt from public access in REF. Didn't know that. There are 182 repos for 157 universities, many don't even support software. Fascinatingly repo software default config is part of the problem.

Domhnall Carlin is presenting some startling numbers at #RSECon23: 63% of UK institutional research repositories (IR) simply can't accept software as a research output. I.e., if you're a researcher and want to upload metadata about software to your IR, you can't. 😮

Simon Hettrick at #RSECon23: how to assess RSE work in academic terms? Papers aren't the right metric: there should be a Hidden Role category for individuals, which will now happen in REF2028. Great talk demonstrating real results.
