You and I have bones. An octopus doesn’t. It has three hearts—two for its gills—pumping coppery blue blood. Instead of gills we have lungs, and our lone heart pumps iron-based red blood. Bony skulls protect our large, unified brains. An octopus’s brain is distributed throughout its soft, amorphous body: nine brainlike nerve clusters, one at the base of each arm and another in its head. Yet the word “head,” when applied to an octopus, is a little puzzling. It’s all too easy to think of everything above the tentacles as its head, where there appears to be plenty of room for a sizable globular brain….
But it’s not a head.
