    @kelbot mmmm cinnamon rolls.

    Makes me long for a similar #Dutch treat, the #ZeeuwseBolus: thedutchtable.com/2011/01/zeeu

    The stickier on the outside, the better!

    I had my eye on the Astro Slide (what a name) but opted for the less expensive #UnihertzTitan which has been my daily driver for the past few weeks. I do love the hardware keyboard. I don't like that it runs Android by default (like Planet Computer's hardware.) I'm still on the fence about going back to a smartphone, but I try to lock it down where I can (side load apps, chroot jails, firewalls, no login to google, etc.)

    Planet Computers has the Gemini, which I still use and got at a discount since I helped crowdfund (wifi version.) There is also the Cosmo Communicator, which is currently 25% off but still expensive.

    And there is the new Astro Slide, which is even moar pricey and not yet released.

  4. @kelbot if you like card games, I can also recommend Solitaire Royale by #GameArts for the #MSX.

    A completely different game, but perhaps also suitable for the OGO (if it can run an MSX emulator) would be The Witch's Revenge, which is a dice-roller adventure game in the style of #RuneMaster. Gameplay footage by Jorf (starts at 14:24)

  5. CW: re: tight constraints breeding creativity

    @kelbot I personally wouldn't mind seeing some more #MSX2 games instead of the steady flow of #MSX1 games.

    The #MSXdev competition has done a great job at breathing back life into the first generation of the #MSX standard, at least when it comes to #games, but perhaps it's time for later revisions to be put a bit more into the spotlight instead.

    Having said that, I don't think it's the responsibility of MSXdev to organise that. If they want to keep their scope limited, I can completely understand that, especially since it would add quite a bit of complexity to the judging process.

    Instead, people are free to organise another competition, contribute to existing multi-platform ones, or just release outside of any compo.

    The MSX scene has had MSX2 or more free-form competitions in the past, usually running concurrently, and I guess that the low participation count is being attributed to MSXdev overshadowing them. Something that perhaps is not quite fair to state.

    Anyway, I welcome any event that brings some more attention to the system from my childhood, even though I don't actively use it anymore myself.

    Disclaimer:
    While I am not directly involved in MSXdev, I am somewhat part of the #MSXResourceCenter at msx.org (I edit news posts, do some moderating, take part in staff discussions, and occasionally contribute original content too), which took over organising MSXdev since this year's edition.

    @kelbot tight constraints is also a discussion point that keeps coming up with each iteration of the #MSXdev competition btw; just see the comments on the 2021 edition's announcement: msx.org/news/challenges/en/msx

    You have one side arguing the constraints should be as tight as possible to force contestants to focus on the gameplay and clever tricks so a game actually gets finished, and the other side who says it should also be open for later generations of #MSX, such as #MSX2, more RAM, and perhaps even audio and graphics extensions such as #OPL4 and #V9990 and also judged as such.

  8. @kelbot the #TMobileG1, also known as the #HTCDream and the #EraG1, was indeed the first commercially released #Android #smartphone, and featured a clickable #trackball: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTC_Drea
    While I didn't have one, I do miss the slide-out screen that revealed a physical keyboard, and part out of also missed the additional buttons, and especially that they are physical ones rather than virtual.

  9. @kelbot I'm probably better off using the #AsciiDocs as basis, and manually convert it to a #gmi file for the couple of posts I'd feel like sharing via #Gemini.

    Oh well, for now I'll turn off the gemini server again till I have something I'm satisfied with. :)

  10. @kelbot while not an update to #TUILauncher itself, you might find these two #shellScript examples to get the volume, and increase the volume, of your snapcast instances, useful: github.com/FiXato/tui_launcher

  11. @kelbot perhaps use #scrobbler: github.com/hawx/mpd-scrobbler
    And once it's on last.fm or throbble, you can probably just query or scrape the info from there?
    Not sure how you can easily be notified of a song changes though, so you know when to update it.

    I remember the early days of #dialupInternet for me: connecting, syncing email, opening a bunch of #forum threads (mostly on #Renderosity art site) and other sites, and submitting replies I had prepared beforehand to ones I'd opened the previous time.

  17. @kelbot something tells me these #DutchPancakes have their origin more in #German than #Dutch cuisine, and has something to do with conflation of #Deutsch (German for 'German') with 'Dutch' (English for 'Nederlands', i.e. the language spoken in the Netherlands), probably due to their shared origin.

    (#PennsylvaniaDutch for example are of German origin rather than Dutch)

    That probably explains why your pancakes looked so unfamiliar to me. :)

    I guess they are similar to mcall.com/entertainment/mc-foo ?

  18. @kelbot @bitsofbas well, there is #dsk2rom which can convert #DSK images to #ROM, but I'm not sure how well it works with #Snatcher or #SDSnatcher: msx.org/news/software/en/dsk2r

    To run DSK images on #fMSX, you'd have to use the -diska (and -diskb) argument(s): fms.komkon.org/fMSX/fMSX.html#

    Not sure how this would work on the #ODroidGO, as I have no experience with that. :)

    I'm also not sure if that version of the emulator needs the MSX (Disk) BIOS ROM files?

    Perhaps check: forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php

  20. @kelbot @djsundog It feels like we're about 80% of the way to me being able to me being able to replace my #zinestation with a hacked down pi 3 + the existing 9.7" waveshare or the 6" inkplate + a terminal emulator that'll support the screen + a mechanical keyboard.

    If I can come up with a decent system for also enabling HDMI out, an okay looking case, and a simple way to make the headphone out a little cleaner, then ... I mean, that's it. Right? The perfect machine to replace my omnibook?

  21. @kelbot I start the stream in a script at startup In a single line:
    vlc --qt-start-minimized v4l2:///dev/video0:width=720:height=480 --sout '#transcode{vcodec=theo,acodec=mpga,vb=800, ab=128}:standard{access=http,mux=ogg,dst=:8080}'

  22. @kelbot
    be careful of that #choiceOverload where you end up not playing anything on it because there's too much to chose from.

  23. @kelbot
    the music (and commentary) for #RockNRollRacing is great too btw (though I prefer the SNES version over the MegaDrive's).
    It's by #SiliconAndSynapse, now better known as #BlizzardEntertainment. :)

  24. @kelbot
    my phone has a protective walletcover, and a tempered glass screen protector (which has saved its actual screen more than a few times).
    My tablet has a flip cover. No screen protector though, as affordable fitting ones were difficult to find.
    My #NDSLite only has plastic screen protectors. If I were to actually take it out and about more, I might have gotten it some kind of case too.

  25. CW: Video games

    @kelbot
    and those machines are a lot bulkier, and thus more expensive, to ship than a simple #PSP!
    If you do ever get one, your best bet is probably a #Yamaha #CX5MII that was (I think) designed for your local market (msx.org/wiki/Yamaha_CX5MII), though that would be just an #MSX1.
    If you'd want an #MSX2 or higher, which I'd recommend, you'd probably be best off shopping in #Japan, as their power system is closer to the #USA's, and in the case of the #turboR, the only market released.

  26. CW: Video games

    @kelbot
    and I guess again we come to the intercontinental shipping, plus the fact that the machines were never released in the USA (apart from the odd Yamaha I guess). In the Netherlands I once picked up a #Pioneer #Palcom #PX7 #MSX with digitizer tablet for about 35 Euro for a friend, and myself bought a set of 2 or 3 #Philips #NMS8250 #MSX2 machines for about 50 EUR (iirc). Since those were designed for a 220-240V power grid, you'd also need a step-down (?) converter.

  27. @kelbot
    (unfortunately the #DSi and #DSiXL only increased their screen size, rather than also the maximum resolution)
