Happy #MSXDay this #MaySiXth everyone!
Unfortunately not a lot of time for #MSX today though, as I have to rush out to work...#MSX2 #NMS8250 #OuterHeaven #OuterSounds #retrogaming #Zemina

@martijn like the fictional dog, I was mostly just taking the piss 😏
If it were plastic, I'd say it had to do with different compositions in the batch. This has a tendency for example to lead to weird looking #MSX #NMS8250 keyboards, where the entire keyboard looks yellowed, except for a single row of keys 😂

May 6th aka #MaySiXth is #MSXDay. ;)
If you have an #MSX, be sure to give it some love today!
Maybe join the celebrations by sharing a photo of your setup?
This is the #Philips #NMS8250 #MSX2 from my childhood, for example, running a Korean bootleg of #Nemesis3, the #EveOfDestruction.#MaySix #homecomputer #homecomputers #retroComputing #retroGaming

@nonius yeah, it was good to have it out again, especially introducing it to the next generation. 💚
Did notice that the disk drives on one of my #NMS8250's are having issues (which don't have belts to replace, so I wonder what's up...), and I was having some video glitches (screen turning magenta, and reseating the SCART had no effect; only a reboot worken) on the other; which was a bit disheartening.Wouldn't mind having a #GR8NET some day, but for now that's an expense I can't yet justify.

This #MaySiXth #MSXDay I'm introducing almost-five-years-old #BeardGrabber to #MSX games again. He's probably the same age now as when my parents got our #Philips #NMS8250 #MSX2 #homecomputer, and now, probably about 35 years later, he gets to play on the very same machine, playing the same original copies as I got or bought during my childhood, which feels quite special. 💙
So far we've played some #BubbleBobble, #Brisk and now #PinballBlaster. His #joystick and #keyboard control isn't good yet, but he's still very much enjoying the experience! 💚I also have some videos of him playing, but I need some time to review the footage to make sure it doesn't show kiddo's face and such. :)

Good! The #TV I picked up for free through #FINN (Norway's probably most popular #secondHand online marketplace), seems to work!
Which means I finally have a working screen again that supports #SCART, so I could connect my #Philips #NMS8250 #MSX2 #homeComputer again. :D
Man... those pixels are large 😅 I kinda wish I had a small CRT just for systems like this. 😂#MSX #BubbleBobble #Taito #FiXatoGames #retroComputing #retroGaming

@h0ffman I agree. Though my sample size of Amiga games probably is rather small (especially considering I only have an A500 without expansions), from what I've seen the Amiga is the better demo platform (or at least the more prolific), while for gaming I'd sooner grab the MSX2.
But hey, perhaps thats just my nostalgia colouring things. ;)(Still need to see if I can find that SCART cable I was sure I had for my A500... well, and a monitor for it in general, as the monitor I had been using for SCART things died a few months ago... Still haven't had the machines on since they found their way to Norway; even the Philips #NMS8250 MSX2 has only been on once...)
@Dozer @Truck -
@aperezdc yeah, #BeardGrabber enjoyed just typing in letters while he was 2-3 years old (and I guess still now at age of 4, but he hasn't shown much interest lately).
Though I at the time wrote a little Python app that would capture all the keypresses, so I could suppress keyboard combinations that could close the app or bring him to another app. Setting up the #MSX certainly would've been more foolproof I guess, especially with the #NMS8250's separate keyboard. Just didn't really have the space to keep that machine set up permanently. -
@Truck
ah, right, the Japanese MSX you mentioned was for a different person :)Yeah, sounds like it was just the RTC batteries then. With a bit of luck they haven't done so much damage already that it can be replaced with a button cell (and probably one of those one way resistors so the machine won't try to charge the button cell). I'll check tomorrow when I'm at my laptop again if I can find a guide for you/Dozer.
Not sure if the #NMS8245 also offers the option, but the #NMS8250 also had a jumper in the form of a soldered rod that allows you to set it to 240V rather than 220V; that should help reduce some heat production with current level of mains power. I'll ask if that's also the case with this model.
-
@aperezdc I remember writing several of my elementary school writing assignments on the #MSX, using Philips Home Office and Dynamic Publisher. :)
My dad also used it for his work to create work schedules, and my parents in general used it to write letters.
I also remember making birthday cards and such with them; mostly clipart in Dynamic Publisher. :)So, as we used a #Philips #NMS8250 #MSX2, that definitely wasn't just limited to the Japanese models. :)

Briefly set up my #Philips #NMS8250 #MSX2 #homecomputer tonight. Was the first time since I moved it from the #Netherlands to #Norway several years ago, so it was a relief to see it was still working properly. :)
Had some minor issues getting the video output to display properly (it was scrolling, banding and skewed), but reseating the SCART cable seemed to fix it. I guess either a bad cable or connexion, or the LED monitor didn't properly recognise the signal.
Slight issues with some keys on the keyboard not being recognised some times, but that might also be the cable / connector, or just dirty matrix inside.Don't really have the space atm to set it up permanently, so it's back in its original box again, but it was good to see it was still working fine!
When I do set it up more permanently, I should resolder the voltage jumper to switch it from 220V to 240V so the power supply will run less hot. (Which means I should actually get a soldering iron some day...)

CW: (Re-)Introduction
Started an alt for @FiXato here on toot.cat to see if #Glitchsoc is a closer match to what I want out of a #SocialMediaPlatform, feature-wise.
So, it's time for a re-introduction:Who am I?
-=-
I'm FiXato, a stay-at-home father of a two-year-old I often refer to as #BeardGrabber.
While I was born in the Netherlands, I've been living in northern Norway for quite some time now.What do I do?
-=-
In day-to-day life I take care of our son while the missus is at work, and when I have some spare time and headspace, I like to tinker on my various coding projects.Aside from that, I like to play some mobile Android games such as #PokémonGO, #Ingress and #MarioKartTour.
Overview in hashtags:
-=-
― #Dutch he/him from the #Netherlands
Emigrated to #Norway (#northernNorway to be more precise)― I like to do #parenting / #parentsOfMastodon posts about our #2yo.
― Grew up with #MSX (a Philips #NMS8250 #MSX2 #homecomputer to be precise).
Related interest in #retroGaming, #retroComputer , and the #demoscene. Looking forward to attending #demoparties again.― #Development experience primarily with #Ruby, #Python and #Bash, with a general #dev interest in #WebDevelopment, #scripting, #coding
― #photography mostly focused on #landscapePhotography using a #MiA1 and #Canon1000D
― also like to post about #language / #linguistics, especially about #etymology
― #FiXatoDrinks is where I tend to post about the #beers and other beverages I drink.

@esheep
#Sony indeed has made some sexy #MSX machines in their time.
This pictured #HitBit #HBF1XD probably being on of their sleekest designs.While the #Philips #NMS8250 #MSX2 holds a special place in my heart because of it being our first #homecomputer, it definitely wasn't as good looking.
#Panasonic's #FSA1GT looks pretty too.

@ClearMask our first #homeComputer was an #msx A #Philips #NMS8250 #MSX2 to be precise, and I still have the exact same one, though I have yet to try it again after moving it from the Netherlands to Norway....

Seeing a big black and white striped #flag with something that looked like pawns in the top left corner, made me want to design my own with various stylised icons of things that mean something to me.
I wonder if I can draw a stylised #Philips #NMS8250 #MSX2 with monitor and keyboard that's simple enough yet still looks like one...

@Truck I at least still have several #MSX; mostly #NMS8250, but I think also a #ToshibaHX10. I had a #HitBit too, but not sure anymore what happened to that one when I moved.
Since I kinda had to rush the packing when my father died several years ago, part of it is kinda a blur.Not sure what you mean with "MSX Blue" though?
I know of #BlueMSX, which is an emulator which I rarely use, and of the #OCM, the #OneChipMSX, which is an #FPGA in a blue case, which Haohmaru afaik owns; not me. :) -

@bitsofbas https://hansotten.file-hunter.com/uploads/files/nms82xxgeluid.pdf has some Dutch and English instructions on how to improve the #NMS8250 and other 82xx models sound quality with some soldering.
-
@bitsofbas interesting read, thanks for sharing. :)
The broken audio mixer of the #NMS8250 #MSX2 is a shame yeah, though growing up with only that machine, I don't think I noticed it much.
Wasn't there also a hardware fix you could do yourself? Something like adding an extra resistor? -
@dirtycommo here's another #MSX recording, this time a #Philips #NMS8250 #MSX2 booting into CP/M Plus and doing a hexdump on one of its utilities: https://youtu.be/KqUKxOTSK1M

@bitsofbas
Looks like the #Philips #MSX #mouse that I have packed with it is a different model than for which you were looking for the ball cover?https://mastodon.social/media/PW9zT_YW6C9DQXdqxSA
https://mastodon.social/media/r7wznUheeTbflke7k0sDo you also have an original transport disk?
https://mastodon.social/media/i_UFMnyfndhtFw2LZv4Unfortunately one of the tabs of the keyboard port of this #NMS8250 #MSX2 has broken off at some point :(
-
@bitsofbas I knew there was a logo on our #NMS8250 #MSX #keyboard #dustcover, but I wasn't sure if it was an official #Philips or #NMS logo, or something else. Turns out it was an #MCN logo, which I believe was the Microcomputer Club Nederland.
Apparently this club was founded by #Vendex, which owned #VroomEnDreesman and the Dutch chain of #Dixons stores.
MCN's director apparently was a #MauriceDeHond. -
@zwangseinweisung I started with a #Philips #NMS8250 #MSX2, which did support a #dataRecorder which you could use to store your own programmes / data, or play bought (or copied) games on #dataCassettes from. :)
Fortunately it also supported 3,25" double-sided double density diskettes as well as ROM cartridges, which we eventually go more of as they became from affordable. :) -
@bitsofbas that's an interesting approach! I'll have to keep that in mind!
I might be able to repair one of the #NMS8250's keyboard connector hinges/slots this way too. -

@kelbot
and I guess again we come to the intercontinental shipping, plus the fact that the machines were never released in the USA (apart from the odd Yamaha I guess). In the Netherlands I once picked up a #Pioneer #Palcom #PX7 #MSX with digitizer tablet for about 35 Euro for a friend, and myself bought a set of 2 or 3 #Philips #NMS8250 #MSX2 machines for about 50 EUR (iirc). Since those were designed for a 220-240V power grid, you'd also need a step-down (?) converter.
