    Goblin
    (2016 - Viki, 16 1:22 eps)

Lived up to its high rankings on MDL & Viki. *Beautiful* cinematography, iconic scenes referenced in many other dramas, great acting, tropes, humor, the best bromance ever, great 2nd couple, coats galore, outstanding OST, past lives, supernatural beings, agony, joy, & fate.

Most complaints are about the age difference between the leads. The actors were 37 & 25, but Kim Go Eun played a high schooler so convincingly that it felt a bit uncomfortable. She ages 10 years in the show & he doesn't, so it worked for me.

How long do you atone for past sins - especially in a previous life? How long must you carry the guilt? Are some sins unforgivable? What would you sacrifice for love? The show brings up a lot of weighty questions. The writing is mesmerizing at times & very witty.

    Touch Your Heart (2019 Netflix)

When I’m watching intense, complicated dramas, I like to take a break with a nice, simple, sweet one. "Touch Your Heart" looked promising.

It is admittedly full of kdrama tropes and a common storyline, but that's what you want in a show you're watching for a break, right? This one did not disappoint. Although the first 2 episodes make it seem that the show will be bland and too predictable, by the third you are seeing some lovely character development, some fun comic relief, and the chemistry of the leads is very good.

I enjoyed the story and even though it's set as a law drama, there is just enough legal drama to make it fun, most of the story is actually about the growth of the 2 leads. Definitely rewatch worthy when I need a break.

    The King: Eternal Monarch

I wanted to love this one a lot. Lee Min Ho as a King with a horse in a science fiction/fantasy world - what could be better?

I liked it and may watch parts of it again. It’s hard to discuss without spoilers. The story had a lot of potential, but fell short for me. I did love Woo Do Hwan - he was excellent at playing 2 really different characters and he makes it worth watching.

Like Heavenly Idol, I think trying to develop & explain another world in just 16 episodes means you leave out a lot of important character development.

I’d say give it a watch, but don’t expect it to the be the epic it looks to be.

Shopping King Louie (Louis / Shopaholic Louis)
    (2016 - Viki, 16 1:00 eps)

It's a full-of-tropes romcom - a rich chaebol with amnesia falling for a poor, country girl (100 Days My Prince story with same FL), but is so cute that it's hard not to love it. It avoids being too melodramatic. The story is pretty predictable with some tiny surprises. The OST is very fun - a lot of western oldies.

Seo In Guk being silly is so darling! I've only seen him in serious things before, but he is great at being a puppy in love. Nam Ji Hyun plays a strong, determined woman very well. The leads have great chemistry & the side characters have sweet little stories of their own. My favorite grandma, Kim Young Ok makes a great conglomorate Chairperson.

    A very fun, relaxing watch!

    100 Days My Prince
    (2018 - Netflix, 16 1:15 eps)

1st show that I've seen DO & he was amazing as the Crown Prince. The acting from everyone was great. It was a predictable romcom with some great lines & average Joseon political intrigue. I haven't watched "Shopping King Louie" yet, but someone commented that this is a Joseon version - w/ the same FL.

Seeing the Crown Prince stuck in a tiny village with no practical skills when he has amnesia is the most comedic part of the story. The great side characters really made the story appealing. The village felt so cozy. The friendships the prince developed were entertaining. The King was infuriating at times, but I ended up liking him. The OST is enjoyable.

It has great action scenes with intricate sword fights that looked like dancing. The cast is outstanding as well. Definitely worth the watch for me.

    My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho
    (2010 - Viki, 16 1:10 eps)

A Gumiho who wants to be human encounters an irresponsible, immature college student & saves him. He promises to help her & they develop feelings. I disliked the director's choice to convey the characters' inner thoughts - just talking out loud to themselves - horrible.

It is 14 years old, but even allowing for age, the production value is lacking, special fx are horrendous & the kisses are wooden. The fantasy elements of the story seemed to be made up as they went along & I was never exactly sure of the antagonist's motives. The leads are super-cute. It did have some sweet moments & some good comedy - especially the Gumiho's misunderstanding of human desires. I enjoyed watching in a B-movie way.

  12. @whoosh This #kdrama really makes me wish I had a Disney+ subscription.

It's based on real horrible events, known as The Burning Sun scandal.
Your sentence "Everyone is fighting for justice in their own way" resonates with what emerged in the BBC documentary. The journalists, the victims, the friend who exposed the chats were all trying to fight.

Also Wookie is in the cast 😁.

    A Korean Odyssey
    (2017 - 20 1:20 eps)

Hong Sisters once again take a classic novel (Journey to the West - China) & adapt it into a Korean epic. I watched with people who read the book, so I had more insight into the characters than usual.

A story about deities & humans, & good & evil. Lee Seung Gi is fabulous as a mean god forced to help a lowly human. The secondary characters (my favorite zombie ever) are truly gems, bringing comedy & heartfelt emotions into supplemental storylines. Many unique characters - a monkey, a piggy, an octopus/dragon king, devil kings, a zombie, a priestess, evil spirits & more - create an interesting story..

Coats are amazing. Bromance is funny & sweet. CGI is mostly crappy. OST is great. Story is out there, but generally very good. I thought the ending of some storylines failed a bit in just the last episode.

    Alchemy of Souls
    (2022 - Netflix, 20 1:20 eps)

The best Hong sisters' drama, incorporating elements of Camelot & the Lady of the Lake with lots of symbolism.

Set in a fictional country, with some Joseon-inspired costumes, it is the story of mages who work to fight evil. It has comedy, romance, battles, magic, political intrigue, gorgeous sets & costumes, marvelous writing, & great OST. The main love story is epic. The bromance is touching. The 2 leads shine in their roles, but all the acting is excellent. The sword fighting in silk robes will make you swoon. While having some classic story elements, it's fresh and profound.

What are previous generations responsible for? Do your desires outweigh societal goals? How does society treat outcasts? Is a hierarchical society sustainable? Besides laughing & crying, you'll be pondering these questions too.

From all of the shows I've watched so far, #Navillera was by far the best at identifying/addressing issues that occur later in life. I also thought that #HometownChaChaCha did well in this area.
There are definitely a lot of excellent actors who are ageing gracefully and could play leading characters. I'd certainly like to see more of that.

    Cheer Up
    (2022 - Viki 16 1:10 eps)

Yeonhee University's cheer squad has a long history, including a terrifying prophecy. A poor woman concerned only about supporting her family & paying tuition is persuaded to join the cheer squad for money. She realizes there is value in doing things you enjoy & having relationships. Other members of the cheer squad also find value in belonging & having others cheer you on.

Interesting look at an unfamiliar (to the U.S.) part of Korean campus life. The love triangle is intense (big-time 2nd ML syndrome) & really becomes the story, making the message take 2nd place. The criminal's motives are mostly glossed over & the crime-ing was very uneven, but since it wasn't central to the story, it's okay. Not a lot of character development, but it did try to present a good message. Some great acting saved the show & made for a very fun watch.

    My Roommate is a Gumiho (2021 - Viki, 16 1hr 10min episodes)

Looked for a light-hearted romcom and this fit the bill. An enjoyable story, good acting, funny at times, but I did tear up here and there too. After seeing Jang Ki-yong in "Search: WWW", I wanted to see him in something else. He surprised me with how comedic he can be. Lee Hye-ri also portrayed her character well. Nothing earth-shattering, but a very pleasant little romcom.
