The Atypical Family - REWATCH
(2024 - Netflix 12 1:10 eps)Even better the 2nd time around!
A dysfunctional family of superheroes who have lost their powers due to modern mental health problems meets a woman who surprises them all & things begin to change.
I was able to pick up on the small clues this time around & a big theme hit me differently. A family that can see the past & the future can't begin to see what's right in front of them in the present. Another idea I liked was that "an ending is a beginning."
Stellar acting, wonderful chemistry, great story, & meaningful cinematography definitely made the rewatch worth it!

Jang Ki-Yong is the actor who surprised me the most this year. I didn't think he could pull a role like the one in #TheAtypicalFamily
He had always played the alpha male before. Strong, confident and powerful. In that drama he becomes a mess of a man. An alcoholic negligent father, emotionally unavailable and rude to every other human being. -

There's no romance and all the main characters either kill the monsters or become one. -

The Atypical Family
(2024 - Netflix, 12 1:10 eps)An original, well-written, well-acted, compelling story with meaning makes this one of the best of 2024 (& that's a high bar). A family of superheroes has fallen due to modern afflictions. A woman appears in their lives & despite an awful start, becomes a ray of hope.
The father-daughter relationship is so moving. Park So Yi at 12 was amazing. The side stories all fold beautifully into the themes of greed-destroys-all & your-perception-can-change-fate that run through the drama. The use of cinematography as a story-telling element was on-point & gorgeous. Chemistry was stellar in all relationships.
I want to go on & on, but I don't think I can say more without spoilers. Excellent drama!

I watched the first episode of #TheAtypicalFamily and wow!
It has some of Parasite (the movie) vibes with a family trying to con a rich one. But the rich family has superpowers, though they momentarily lost them. I can really picture the evolution of each character with lost superpowers.
A beautiful actress like #ClaudiaKim is made obese here. Will she lose weight?
And it's the first time that I see #JangKiYong as a troubled and desperate man. What a great actor 💜!

My Roommate is a Gumiho (2021 - Viki, 16 1hr 10min episodes)Looked for a light-hearted romcom and this fit the bill. An enjoyable story, good acting, funny at times, but I did tear up here and there too. After seeing Jang Ki-yong in "Search: WWW", I wanted to see him in something else. He surprised me with how comedic he can be. Lee Hye-ri also portrayed her character well. Nothing earth-shattering, but a very pleasant little romcom.
