  1. I realise many of my friends are bewildered by my new found love for #kdrama but one of the reasons I watch is because it's escapism or sometimes just therapeutic. Been a really difficult week at work with some (possibly unfixable) tech problems and chaos amongst people we support.. so decided I needed something calm and restful and been watching #WhenTheWeatherIsFine which is a very slow, musical, poetic story of small town rural life, friendships, love, guilt, forgiveness set around a small bookshop. FL is the fabulous #ParkMinYoung and very different from anything I've seen her in before. Also features #LeeJaeWook in a small role as an old school friend.

  2. I finished #dearhongrang and found it a magnificent telling of uncomfortable truths about power, corruption, greed and obsession. To say more than this would give away too much. #leejaewook, #joboah and #junggaram bring depth to the characters they portray & the supporting cast does equally well. It’s a rare 10/10 from me. #kdrama
ETA: I see the original name of the drama is Tangeum.

  3. Oh this performance mv is divine .. Bibi never disappoints. Peak sexy nerd. I feel like Zelda F. would have approved. 😍

  5. The Impossible Heir
    (2024 - Disney+/Hulu, 12 1:01 eps)

Not a well-loved show by ratings. I paused for a while because I heard the end wasn't as hoped. Many people did not like the plot - a lot of corporate behind-the-scenes shenanigans propel the story & many thought the FL flat & cold. Women often get criticized for playing cold characters. Her character was supposed to be cold - it's even mentioned explicitly.

A great plot twist changes everything. Looking back, we see the true nature of the characters. Lee Jae Wook's character does a lot of thinking & he's great at conveying his thoughts silently.

The ending was open & I will interpret it to match my expectations. If you like a good production, corporate intrigue, little romance, open endings, & the actors in this series, it might be a good binge - keeping track of the twisty plot over time is tough.

  6. Alchemy of Souls 2: Light and Shadow
    (2022 - Netflix, 10 1:21 eps)

The completion of Alchemy of Souls - a beautiful show with a lot of symbolism, wit, & depth.

The 2nd part feels very different. Our lead has gone through some stuff & he is a changed man. It is much darker, which is appropriate considering that our lead is in a dark place now.

Many people complained about the change in the FL, but if you watch carefully, it makes complete sense. Although you may wonder how you could be as invested as you were during part 1, watching the characters work through the problems pulls you in again.

Great acting again makes an unusual story come across as believable. The side characters get more room for their stories. I'm glad I watched both seasons at once, with a watch party, to get me through the first few episodes of part 2 because I was not happy initially.

  7. Alchemy of Souls
    (2022 - Netflix, 20 1:20 eps)

The best Hong sisters' drama, incorporating elements of Camelot & the Lady of the Lake with lots of symbolism.

Set in a fictional country, with some Joseon-inspired costumes, it is the story of mages who work to fight evil. It has comedy, romance, battles, magic, political intrigue, gorgeous sets & costumes, marvelous writing, & great OST. The main love story is epic. The bromance is touching. The 2 leads shine in their roles, but all the acting is excellent. The sword fighting in silk robes will make you swoon. While having some classic story elements, it's fresh and profound.

What are previous generations responsible for? Do your desires outweigh societal goals? How does society treat outcasts? Is a hierarchical society sustainable? Besides laughing & crying, you'll be pondering these questions too.

It is and it's peak #LeeJaeWook perfection!! A revenge drama that seems to be quite nuanced. Most of the D+ shows seem to pack at least double the action into every episode. My head is spinning by the end!

Ah, well, the dailies would be like soap operas or telenovelas. That's OK, I've lived through those addictions and was happy to get free of them.
I'm excited about #TheImpossibleHeir starring #leeJaeWook at the end of the month. It sounds like it will be a Makjang show based on the daily he starred in in #SearchWWW. Should be fun even though it will mean that I probably have to pay for my own D+ subscription. They're reportedly cracking down in March. #kdrama

    Thanks for the warning!

Because of AoS, I've watched a few other things with Lee Jae Wook too - he is a phenomenal actor.

  12. @RomanticIsa

My watchparty group just finished AoS #1. We're starting AoS #2 tomorrow!! I so hope the ending won't be sad. Uk deserves better!!

  13. @UkMudeok

It was hard to pick one, he can look so different.

  14. End of the Year Drama Challenge
Day 3: Favourite actor discovered in 2023

Since I started kDrama in the fall of 2022, I met many of my favorites during '22, but one actor who I've come to admire didn't show up until April of 23 -
Lee Jae Wook, in Search WWW.

At that point, I thought he was good, but I think I was so enamored with his female costar, that I didn't pay the attention to him that I should have.

In September, encouraged by my watch party group, I took more of an interest in him, watching "Extraordinary You" for Rowoon, but coming to adore Lee Jae Wook. I went on to watch him in "Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol," where he was also excellent.

Currently watching "Alchemy of Souls" where he won the Global Excellence Award, the Best Actor, & Asia Special Award. He's also won many awards for his other shows. He is great at showing a wide range of emotions, has the ability to be comedic, and does action really well.

  15. Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol
    (2020 - Netflix, 16 1:03 eps)

Phenomenal acting, especially Lee Jae Wook & Kim Joo Heon. Go Ah Ra's performance makes her character, who could have come off self-centered & demanding, a loveable woman with a zest for life.

An escapist romcom - a story of falling in love. Until eps 14, it has entertaining side couples, reasonable trauma, evil mother, stalker, cute dog, enticing food scenes, beautiful piano music, & a theme of learning to enjoy life's simple things.

The writer abandoned the satisfying narrative that had been developing & threw in some horrible plot twists with no reasonable explanation & which completely ruined the ML's integrity. But the characters were portrayed so well that I ended up crying for nearly all the last 2 eps. I will miss them, but I cannot forgive what the writer did to that story.

  16. Extraordinary You
    (2019 - Viki, 32 35min eps)

Light (sun-, spot-, star-, filtered through fingers & leaves) & trumpet flowers (symbolizing waiting) result in beautiful scenes. Cast is *filled* with amazing young actors in their 1st or early lead roles. Great OST.

Messages about not succumbing to others' expectations, creating your destiny, not letting the past define you, & making yourself the star of your life. Perfect for a high school romcom.

The ending is messy: plot holes, repeated plot devices, uneven char. dev., kDrama illogic, strong FLs dissolving. The writers didn’t seem to know how to wrap things up.

The beginning is captivating & I would probably rewatch it again with some fast-forwarding in the later episodes.
