  1. Nice piece from #JeremyDenk on Charles Ives, in honor of 150th birth anniversary. Good use of clips from the third and first violin sonatas to illustrate key points, making this something closer to a sound essay (?).

  2. Am currently pondering the wonderful fact that both #CharlesIves and #WallaceStevens were insurance execs for their "day jobs" -- at roughly the same time, too.

Ives, however, retired earlier in his life (1930, according to Wikipedia), while Stevens stayed on until nearly his death.

So much of Ives's critical work was composed in the pre-war years that seem pretty critical to Stevens development, too -- the mid-1910s.

  3. Just finished listening to Daniel Caesar's new "Son of Spergy" album -- which was really good! -- and was quite pleased to have a bit of a fakeout ending on the last track.

It reminded me of "hidden tracks" on CDs. Silence long enough that I legit thought the album was done, and was just starting to think about putting on something else.

Anyhow, here's "Baby Blue" from the album, which is not the closer, but is probably my favorite from the album. Very Frank Ocean floating in a pure space:

  4. Today is the last day of the fundraiser I am holding for The Trevor Project, the leading suicide prevention organization for LGBTQ+ young people.
This one-time sale is available exclusively to subscribers of my newsletter. DM me and I’ll send you the link.

Among the works offered is this early drawing from 2005, Where I imagined every piece of clothing I own—neatly folded, stitched end to end, and rolled into a dense spiral.

  9. It was a curious thing, to read this book from #AmosOz, #ScenesFromVillageLife, right now, knowing what is happening in Gaza and the region more broadly, as well as knowing that Oz's own understanding of Israeli history was a fairly sober one --- to the best of my knowledge, anyway.

So much of that history lurks behind the scenes here, explicitly referenced only occasionally, but teeming between the lines. Like the house in the "Lost" chapter, the individuals of this cycle are haunted, but so is the village and their lives as a whole. You poke at one element of that haunting and whole new hallways and passages open up.

  10. Wrapping up some thoughts on #AmosOz - Scenes from Village Life.

The first few stories were stories of intense loneliness, isolation, and estrangement, and these are the same themes that Oz carries through the whole. In truth, it got a little monotonous by the end -- but still, two of the stories stood out: "Lost" and "Singing."

"Lost" tells of a local realtor who visits one of the oldest homes in the village, once occupied by the town's now-deceased most famous personage, a novelist who wrong "long novels about the Holocaust." Through a sort of magical realism, the house - which will likely be sold for destruction or radical renovation, to clear the land for modern development - becomes a labyrinth. Guided through its mysterious passages and features by the deceased writer's daughter, the house becomes a meditation on the relationship between past, present, and future, in the shadow of Israeli history and the cultural memory of the Holocaust.

  11. Some comments on individual vignettes in #AmosOz - "Scenes from Village Life"

"Heirs" - The arrival of a stranger who won't leave reminds me of a story by... Flannery O'Connor? Eudora Welty? Regardless, I wasn't expecting an opening so unsettling.

"Relations" - More estrangement, more loneliness. These vignettes are portraits so far and Oz packs a lot of vivid characterization into fairly short spaces. We see more of the village and its residents/neighbors but it is still (mostly) background here.

"Digging" - Not as unsettling as "Heirs" but still haunting. We see more of Tel Ilan's past and present here, and it is no coincidence that anxieties over Arab land claims are prominent here.

If these characters are largely unlikable and test your sympathy, they are also very human and *familiar*.

Amos Oz - Scenes from Village Life

I could have sworn I read half of this some time ago but I picked it off the bookshelf last night (mainly because I was looking for something short!) and it is completely new to me. Must be confusing it with another Oz work.

Will add some running notes to this thread.

  13. Some #Homelab success today:

Finally finished a rough de-duping of my old music files, enough to justify setting up #Navidrome for streaming from my home server.

So I did! Even got it up and running on my phone and my wife's phone. Trying out #Amperfy on my wife's iOS and #Ultrasonic on my GrapheneOS.

    So far so smooth!

I wish there was a way for my wife to build her own library out of our super large library (that is mostly my files)... but we can probably find a work around for that later.

  17. Congrats to the 8th winner of @erakir's Monthly Moogle Raffle 2024, @tsuki_treble. Erakir enjoys playing FFXIV, and he really loves helping others get into it just as much! Tsuki wrote out some dialogue for this image.

Tsuki: So, remind me again why you've roped me into dewing savage raids Kirry? you know I ain't into this hard content nonsense, and on a mouse and keyboard no less...

Erakir: Just trust me okay? I've made certain this will be a very enjoyable experience for both of us.

Tsuki: And I'm pretty sure that I'm gonna find this as annoying as... Huh, these controls feel a lot more natural than I was expecting.

Erakir: See, what did I say~? just had to give it a chance and now it's already like you've been doing these for years.

Tsukir: I mean... Yeah guess yer right. Though can't really say that's much of a surprise though given I have been doing this for years.

Erakir: Always fun taking a trip down memory lane, right~?

Tsuakir: Well it would be if I wasn't playing such a cumbersome class, dunno why I decided to do my reclears with Scholar of all things.

Erakir: Beats me! clearly you should be switching back to your main once you're done with this group, bet it'll make things flow much easier.

Tsruakir: Mhm, really shoulda just stuck with White Mage as usual.

Erakir: Gonna try this fight again after you swap back?

Erakir: Nah don't wanna do the same thing twice in a row, think I'll just run O3S again to have some actual fun.

  24. The 2025 Trevor Levere Best Paper Prize goes to the team of the paper "The drop and the metric system: how an unruly unit survived revolutions"
    tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10

This is really great news and is for an excellent paper that I highly recommend reading!

Working myself in an area that has at best non-standard measurement units (at worst, some people would argue, is not measurement at all), I found this very interesting.
