It was a curious thing, to read this book from #AmosOz, #ScenesFromVillageLife, right now, knowing what is happening in Gaza and the region more broadly, as well as knowing that Oz's own understanding of Israeli history was a fairly sober one --- to the best of my knowledge, anyway.
So much of that history lurks behind the scenes here, explicitly referenced only occasionally, but teeming between the lines. Like the house in the "Lost" chapter, the individuals of this cycle are haunted, but so is the village and their lives as a whole. You poke at one element of that haunting and whole new hallways and passages open up.

Wrapping up some thoughts on #AmosOz - Scenes from Village Life.
The first few stories were stories of intense loneliness, isolation, and estrangement, and these are the same themes that Oz carries through the whole. In truth, it got a little monotonous by the end -- but still, two of the stories stood out: "Lost" and "Singing."
"Lost" tells of a local realtor who visits one of the oldest homes in the village, once occupied by the town's now-deceased most famous personage, a novelist who wrong "long novels about the Holocaust." Through a sort of magical realism, the house - which will likely be sold for destruction or radical renovation, to clear the land for modern development - becomes a labyrinth. Guided through its mysterious passages and features by the deceased writer's daughter, the house becomes a meditation on the relationship between past, present, and future, in the shadow of Israeli history and the cultural memory of the Holocaust.

Some comments on individual vignettes in #AmosOz - "Scenes from Village Life"
"Heirs" - The arrival of a stranger who won't leave reminds me of a story by... Flannery O'Connor? Eudora Welty? Regardless, I wasn't expecting an opening so unsettling.
"Relations" - More estrangement, more loneliness. These vignettes are portraits so far and Oz packs a lot of vivid characterization into fairly short spaces. We see more of the village and its residents/neighbors but it is still (mostly) background here.
"Digging" - Not as unsettling as "Heirs" but still haunting. We see more of Tel Ilan's past and present here, and it is no coincidence that anxieties over Arab land claims are prominent here.
If these characters are largely unlikable and test your sympathy, they are also very human and *familiar*.

Amos Oz - Scenes from Village Life
I could have sworn I read half of this some time ago but I picked it off the bookshelf last night (mainly because I was looking for something short!) and it is completely new to me. Must be confusing it with another Oz work.
Will add some running notes to this thread.
