Recently when I deleted my bird-site profile, I noticed that in the settings, it was recorded as "Gender - Male".
I never set my gender in such profiles - after all, my avatar is a coffee cup, coffee is surely gender-neutral.
So it makes me think the algorithm looked at posts re #coffee and #science and said -> male.
Problematic enough, but then it put the faulty logic straight into the settings. Yes I can correct it (if necessary) but that is not the point.

Just after I had stirred my #FlatWhite #Coffee (with #OatMilk ) I noticed that the drips from the spoon were leaving patterns on the surface.
This photo shows three drips from the spoon - the particulates making the colour brown-ish have been displaced into 3 circles. I think there's a lot of #physics here - from how colours appear to how #CoffeeRings form to even an aspect of #CopperMining (sometimes uses foam to raise the ore). What do you think?

Does this #coffee reflect #physics or life?
When the first microscopes and telescopes were used, there were concerns about how we should interpret what we saw through them.
I noticed this reflection on the surface of my coffee. Looking up, I realised it was a reflection of a loud-speaker itself reflected in a mirror.
So, a lesson in caution of how we use reflection to see what we can’t? Or a lesson in life - sometimes we have to change perspective to see what’s there?

Inside the cafe we enjoyed two types of coffee. An iced coffee complete with floating ice cream and an oat milk flat white. I couldn’t resist appreciating the latte art by drinking the #coffee along the axis!
There’s diffusion, density and bubble #physics here, but perhaps you notice something else, more #science hidden in the coffee?

A glasshouse cafe with two sorts of cooling system. Pokok in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is air conditioned but also, if you look carefully you can see a sprinkler on the roof of the cafe - pouring water on the roof which then evaporates to help the cooling.

Last week, I had the opportunity to visit the Colombian Coffee Company in Southwark, London. A lovely coffee in a delicate cup, with plenty of physics to ponder too.

Have you ever watched as droplets of coffee ‘bounce’ over the surface of your brewing pour over?
A known #physics phenomenon, these ‘drops’ are usually observed in the lab using silicone oil. A ‘how to’ video to (reproducibly) make them is linked to this toot. To do it with coffee instead, mix the coffee with a little bit of soap.

Each year, the “Gallery of Fluid Motion” highlights the videos submitted to the Annual Meeting of the APS Division of Fluid Dynamics.
And each year there are some brilliant videos featuring physics that you could (with a bit of experimentation) see in a coffee cup.
This is one of this years winners - and while the authors don’t mention this explicitly - it’s what could happen if you put your #coffee cup on a #loudspeaker
