We traverse North Uist from south to north and then cross another causeway, this time to the island of Berneray in the Sound of Harris. Berneray is a beguilingly attractive place, with settlement only on its eastern side. Its entire west coast forms an amazing three mile long beach of white sand. Field of dreams, North Uist.
My first time in North Uist was a very short stop of a few hours waiting for ferry connections to align. I wandered off and was completely captivated by this wild flower meadow with the gentle curving land, and for several years, this is how I saw North Uist in my mind. I later went back and spent more time there, and this image continues to resonate with me: the gentle shapes and colour palette. Even in storms it retains this beauty for me.
