  1. Roy Hargrove's Crisol - Grand-Terre

There are so many personalities to the late Roy Hargrove's composition and playing, and in Crisol, it's all Afro-Cuban hard bop.

Crisol's first LP, Habana, came out in 1997, and for some reason this follow-up wasn't released until last year.

As with a lot of this stuff, it's not because it isn't great!

  2. The Paranoid Style - Known Associates

Elizabeth Nelson gathers together her Known Associates for another hyper-literate ocean of words, along with great music.

Nelson's sharp wit and great songwriting remains intact...no surprise. And all the playing (including Peter Holsapple of the dBs) is on point, too.

  3. Erykah Badu - New Amerykah Part 1 (4th World War)

With a title like that, you know she has a lot to say, and she does, about the state of the country.

But, in the best track, Telephone, she narrows her focus down to J Dilla...

  4. Miles Davis - The Complete Live at the Plugged Nickel 1965

Slowly working my way through this huge 10LP set of the Second Great Quintet (Miles Davis/Herbie Hancock/Wayne Shorter/Ron Carter/Tony Williams) push-push-PUSHing towards a new way of playing, namely: if you're bored with what's expected, do the opposite.

It can skirt right up to free playing, but then gets reined in...

  9. Julian Lage - Scenes from Above

Something a bit different from Lage, with a quartet featuring John Medeski, Jorge Roeder (bass), and Kenny Wollesen. (Patrick Warren—of, I think, Aimee Mann/Michael Penn/etc—shows up, too.)

I'd say he's in the Frisell mode for some, but there are a lot of great *tunes* here, with everyone stepping forward and contributing.

    Really good.

  14. Chet Baker in New York

Chet flies from California to NYC to take a bite out of the 1958 Big Apple. Meeting him here are Miles' rhythm section (Philly Joe Jones & Paul Chambers), along with Al Haig (piano), and Johnny Griffin (tenor).

Lots of melodic songs with good playing all around, and the rhythm section pushes everyone into a less West Coast style.

  19. John Scofield / Dave Holland - Memories of Home

Scofield and Holland have played together quite a few times, and they've done some tours, but they've never recorded as a duo.

Well, that's been rectified on this ECM release, featuring a set of originals from each of them, along with one Cole Porter song.

A lot of tone and texture is wrung out of a "simple" guitar/bass duo, as you'd expect with two masters of the form...

Wired: discovering that even though the fabric is "under" the aluminum surround, it is easily slid out and cleaned.

  30. T. Rex - Electric Warrior

I have no idea why I've avoided this album for so long. Maybe it was because Bang a Gong (Get it On) was so ubiquitous, and it seemed like it was just offering more of the same.

    But, well, no. Yes, it's boogie-glam, with semi-nonsense lyrics, but it's also...kinda...great?

And if you're going to make up for lost time, the Rhino High Fidelity version is great.
