First SD4 backup to an image (through an unmounted host -> image -> open -> resize -> check host available space -> copy -> unmount -> unmount host).
OK, time to walk the dog in his light-up vest and get some rest.

Slowly rebuilding a better version of image support all week. It's been brutal edge case after edge case to do this well.
Please travel back in time and tell past-me to just do a fart and/or fake-beer-in-phone app instead.

(F(those that are interested)I)—the User's Guide is a series of Markdown chapters, and a Markdown index, rendered on-the-fly as a User's Guide. Took a while to get it working, but I think it looks pretty good, and it's much easier for me to edit.
That is, when I don't fuck it up by editing the wrong thing.
Thanks to @gruber for Markdown (even if what I’m rendering is a little nonstandard). So much nicer than doing all this in Dreamweaver (kids, ask your parents), Pages, Word, PageMaker (ditto), Quark (ditto again), FrameMaker (ditto a third time), or whatever.
Can I say, though, that I miss writing entire printed User's Guides? There was something satisfying about having a nice, spiral-bound, beautifully printed, color-covered User's Guide in a box…it always felt like I *made* something real.
Now, months and months of work just sort of digital and transient and this-too-shall-pass. Nothing reall to put on the shelf as an accomplishment…

In general, I had thought people would back selected folders up to NAS devices, rather than trying to back up their whole Home folder and all its stuff…NAS devices (and SMB) are not super happy with zillion-file folders.
But, I’ll give it a try with a massive Home folder...mine.
This probably *won’t* be pretty.

Stupidest SuperDuper 4 bug: if you've just installed (copied) SuperDuper to your drive and then click the registration link, it can't register because it's not fully installed.
Classic ordering dum-dum move.
If you hit this, just run SuperDuper, go through onboarding, then click the registration link.
It'll be fixed in 4.0.3.

Review of SuperDuper 4 by Dan Moren at Six Colors:

Omg, my favorite macOS full disk backup tool #SuperDuper will get an update. I totally missed the news.
Some years ago I decided to not use it anymore and just use file based backups using #Arqbackup because SuperDuper had issues with new versions of macOS.
Time to look into it again… and get a new external SSD.

🎉 Hold onto your shirt pockets, folks! The ancient relic, #SuperDuper, gets a "toptobottom rewrite" after only 22 short years. 😂 Just imagine the cutting-edge 2004 design decisions that are still holding strong in 2026... because who needs progress when you have nostalgia? 🕰️🔄

Looks like ATP is up with a Hypercritical review of SuperDuper 4.

The difficulty of properly walking a directory path longer than the normal APIs accept cannot be overstated.

#SuperDuper!, one of my all time favorite backup-tools for #MacOS which I'm using maybe not for 22 years of its existence, but at last 15, offers still free upgrades.
And it's developers, @dnanian and Bruce Lacey still take their trade seriously:

Much, much appreciated in those days. Thank you.

"Why are so many applications missing from /Applications on my SuperDuper! backup?"
So...they're not. /Applications is a synthsized folder that's made up of two: /Applications, on the Data volume, and /System/Applications on the System volume.
Apple apps, which are part of the OS, are in /System/Applications.
Finder stiches them together on a startup drive: a virtual view of something that's not *really* there. Prove this to yourself in Terminal...

We're going to do something a little unusual: we're going to offer up our SuperDuper 4.0 Beta, automatically, to any users running the Tahoe Beta.
It has specific support in there for Tahoe, and if you're running one Beta, it’s smart (I think) to ensure you've got a tool you're already using that's designed to support it…
This way, people who aren't reading the blog will be able to get it, too.

SuperDuper update:
We've completed initial compatibility testing, and we can successfully generate a bootable backup under Tahoe.
We have some UI issues to work through (weird layout problems and exceptions in normal, system-generated alert panels, yay), but hope to have a Tahoe-compatible beta shortly.
